Bulgarian masterpiece!
hhherb13 October 2005
This is one incredibly movie! One of the best I have ever seen!

Group of mountaineers is preparing for the next winter hike. Each of them has his own relationships and biography in the trivial round. But when the group is in the whiteness of the snow, questions about faith, the meaning of the hike and the role of the leader obtain concrete levels. The efforts between the members are also one avalanche (the movie's international name is Avalanche) of human feelings and when the snow avalanche pounce on the mountaineers, they are covered up in the literal and figurative meaning. The few survivors give a new meaning to concepts like life, death, happiness, trust, betrayal around the lifeless bodies of their friends...

The point of the movie is, that there aren't used any sets. It's filmed in the Bulgarian mountains Rila, Pirin and Vitosha and sometimes the temperature was around -15 C. Some of the most famous Bulgarian mountain climbers (even some who had been on the roof of the world - Everest) were there to help the crew. They also played in the cascades. Also great camera work! A new vision, that I haven't seen in any movie before. Pretty good acting too, but I'm not sure will you be able to understand the characters if you're not Bulgarian.

And what is really important, the movie is based on a true story. There is really such a group of 15 members that is overtook by an avalanche around Malyovica - peak in Rila Mountain. Only 5 of them survive. Around 1970 the famous Bulgarian writer Blaga Dimitrova creates a scenario based on this facts. It is filmed in 1982 by Hristo Piskov.

One heart-shaking drama about natural occurrences and human feelings, Lavina (Avalanche) is amazing movie with an unique vision and incredible screenplay that provokes you to think about things like life, death and the sense of our actions.
