On Monday, Oscar-winning documentarian Asif Kapadia told a roomful of Cph:dox Conference attendees that he might have never directed a nonfiction film had it not been for Harvey Weinstein “killing” his first narrative feature film, “The Warrior.”
“The Warrior,” starring the late Irrfan Khan, is about a mercenary directed by an evil warlord to wreak havoc on a rural village in Rajasthan by forcing the poor inhabitants to pay taxes. In 2003, the film won two BAFTAs for outstanding debut and outstanding British Film. But according to Kapadia, the film garnered no attention outside of England due to Weinstein, who bought worldwide rights – excluding the U.K. – in 2001.
“I was flown out to New York to meet Weinstein, and everyone was saying how great it was that the film had sold to Miramax,” Kapadia said. “I remember saying why I did not feel good about (the deal).”

Shannon Lee has finally made the martial arts saga her father dreamed up. She remembers ‘the inner energy’ of the kung fu superstar Hollywood – and Tarantino – made a mockery of
The legend that Shannon Lee grew up with goes like this. In 1971, when her father Bruce Lee was at the height of his Hollywood kung fu fame, he tried to develop a TV show called The Warrior. It followed a Chinese immigrant with martial arts skills who gets caught up in the Tong wars of the late 1800s, the violent clashes between rival factions in Chinatowns across America. Our hero finds himself journeying through the wild west.
Lee envisaged himself in the leading role, and pitched The Warrior to a Us studio, which told him that America wasn’t ready for an Asian leading man. A year later, Warner Bros released Kung Fu, which followed a Shaolin monk with martial...

Did you know that the 1970s TV show “Kung Fu” was based on an uncredited pitch by Bruce Lee? According to Lee’s widow, Warner Brothers liked (and poached) his idea of a martial arts master wandering the American West but passed him over for the lead role in favor of David Carradine. Warner Brothers claims they’d already had the concept for “Kung Fu” in the works when Lee proposed his own series (called “The Warrior”) to the studio in 1971. But even if you believe them, it’s hard not to wonder what a version of the show that starred Bruce Lee might have looked like.
Nearly half a century later, Lee’s daughter Shannon, director-producer Justin Lin, and writer-producer Jonathan Tropper have created a Cinemax TV series that attempts to realize his original vision while updating it for a new generation...

Cinemax's Warrior was developed from notes by the legendary Bruce Lee. Here's how the long lost project became a reality.
It’s the project Bruce Lee fans have been whispering about for decades.
“The Warrior,” a treatment for a television series about a Chinese fighter who comes to America during the era of the Old West and uses his unique skills to help those in need, was first conceptualized in the late 1960s. Lee wrote the treatment with himself in mind, and was met by disappointment when studios felt that American viewers weren’t ready for a Chinese lead on prime time TV. A few years later, Warner Bros. TV brought Kung Fu...a series about a Chinese monk who comes to America during the era of the Old West, to ABC for three seasons. Oh yeah, and they cast David Carradine, a white man, in...

Music makes such a huge difference when it comes to enjoying TV’s top shows, on a level that goes well beyond a theme song. Great composers create an aural language that’s as tangible and essential as the actors or sets on screen, aided by music supervisors who discover undiscovered tracks as well as essential classic gems —without which the show’s most powerful moments would have no impact.
Even the Television Academy agrees: For this first time, this year the Emmy Awards handed out a prize for outstanding music supervision. Susan Jacobs won the award for the “Big Little Lies” episode “You Get What You Need.”
There were so many shows that changed the way music was used on television this year — whether it was Tom Petty’s “American Girl” becoming a shout of protest, an obscure Elvis Presley cover becoming one of our favorite tunes of the year,...

The director of Senna and Amy on falling in love with his subjects, tackling Maradona, and how his films resemble pop art
London-born director Asif Kapadia is known for his “true fiction” documentaries: 2010’s groundbreaking Senna, about the Formula One icon Ayrton Senna; and Amy, on the short life of Amy Winehouse, which won the Oscar for best documentary feature in 2016. He is currently working on a film about another troubled genius, Diego Maradona. Before factual films, Kapadia made narrative dramas. His first feature, The Warrior, will be screened this summer as part of a Bafta Debuts tour, which showcases a handful of Bafta-winning debut films from leading British directors, such as Lynne Ramsay, Andrea Arnold and Steve McQueen.
The Warrior won two Baftas – for best debut and for outstanding British film in 2003 – but it’s been seen less than some of your other films. Do you think it stands the test of time?...

The boost is on top of the $5.6m (£4m) the Dfe has invested in the Academy’s residential and regional programmes since 2012.
The move came on the day that 66 young filmmakers from the BFI Film Academy unveiled six short films to British film industry figures including producers Alison Owen (Suffragette, Saving Mr. Banks), Faye Ward (Suffragette, Jane Eyre) and Duncan Kenworthy (The Pass, Love Actually).

Amy and Senna director cautioned against the rising cost of education at the Screen Film Summit.
Asif Kapadia has warned that young filmmakers starting out today are unlikely to get the same opportunities that he did due to the cost of education in the UK.
Speaking at the Screen Film Summit in London, the director said: “The reason that Amy and Senna bring money into the UK is because I was given a grant to go to film school.”
It is unlikely, he added, that, if he were setting out on his career today, he would have been able to afford to pay to study his craft.
Kapadia grew up in Hackney and went on to study film at three different higher education institutions.
The director’s advice to young filmmakers was to “be bold, be crazy,” in order to stand out from the crowd. “It’s about finding what makes you unique”.

Tipped for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, and knowing how well Senna played globally and how Amy Winehouse in her short time became an institution, Thierry Frémaux’s Cannes programming team are undoubtably giving the docu film a serious look, and apparently,… so are the A24 folks. THR reports that the distrib would have landed their first docu – one that already has a built in fanbase and a U.K release date. Asif Kapadia‘s Amy would also receive a summer release.

London-based journalist Shrestha Trivedi writes about Irrfan Khan’s Masterclass with Asif Kapadia at the recent London Indian Film Festival
Photo Courtesy: London Indian Film Festival
I t is a measure of how good an actor Irrfan Khan is when you start associating his “intense, brooding” onscreen persona with the man himself.
The actor was in London to participate in a masterclass conducted by the renowned director Asif Kapadia, of Senna fame, at the British Film Institute as part of the London Indian Film Festival. It was expected that the discourse would consist of his cinematic journey and the craft of acting – which of course he spoke about at length – what was unexpected, though, was the terrific sense of humour which laced his conversations, and how the entire auditorium was hanging onto his each and every word.
Enough has already been written about his “unconventional” looks and choices, so perhaps...

He nearly quit acting in the 90s, but now Irrfan Khan is one of the most wanted stars in India and Hollywood, with roles in Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi
Character actors, we are routinely told, are usually the sort with "interesting" looks. The kind directors wouldn't hang a blockbuster on the cheekbones of, but would, say, use for depth, flavour, grit – every creative euphemism that conveys "solid acting, shame about the face". At 48, Irrfan Khan is a character-acting veteran. Considered too "unconventional-looking" for Bollywood leads and, too little-known and Indian for Hollywood's, Khan has perfected the art of being that guy, from that thing. Since his breakthrough in Asif Kapadia's The Warrior in 2001, right up to Ang Lee's award-magnet Life of Pi just over a decade later, Khan has built up the steady level of kudos that comes from being a serious, dependable actor.

Film is set to look into the late singer's troubled life, her relationships and the media attention she attracted
The life and times of the singer Amy Winehouse is to form the subject of a new documentary by Asif Kapadia. The British film-maker won the Bafta documentary award for his previous picture, Senna, a portrait of the Brazilian racing driver Ayrton Senna, who was killed at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. His Winehouse film looks set to provide another tale of surging triumph curtailed by tragedy.
Singer-songwriter Winehouse won five Grammy awards for her breakthrough 2006 album Back to Black. But her career was dogged by reports of substance abuse and mental health issues. She died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.
The as-yet-untitled documentary will be produced by James Gay-Rees, Kapadia's partner at the Playmaker Films production company, with a co-production credit for Universal Music. "Amy...

Asif Kapadia, director of Senna, tells Sarfraz Manzoor how he spent four days in a chopper making a 'democratic' film about London and the Olympics
I meet Asif Kapadia in a bar on the 15th floor of a hotel in central London. The location offers panoramic views of the city below, making it an unintentionally appropriate place to discuss the director's latest film. The Odyssey, a rare joint commission by Film4 and BBC Films, is Kapadia's contribution to the London 2012 festival. (The director of the acclaimed 2010 documentary Senna is one of five film-makers, with Mike Leigh, Lynne Ramsay and StreetDance directing duo Max and Dania, to receive Olympic commissions.) Like the others', Kapadia's film is short, at just under 30 minutes, but ambitious in scope, charting the seven years since London won the bid. Since that day in July 2005, London has been bombed, bruised by the financial crisis and burned in last summer's riots.
