Ben Stiller's professional onscreen career is officially turning 30 this year — that's roughly 412 in comedian years. In a business where funny people tend to quickly exhaust their limited charm and sink from telling jokes to becoming a punchline, the restless and versatile Stiller has managed to sustain one of the most consistent comic careers this side of Bob Hope. From his days as a bit player to his later emergence as a force of nature in front of the camera and behind the scenes (you have his production company Red...

Dan Harmon wants to be the guy that makes people happy – so says the man himself in the first trailer for Neil Berkeley’s documentary Harmontown. It is sad to think that, despite having created one of the best comedy series in recent memory – Community – Harmon is probably best known for his spectacular firing from said show, following mounting conflict between him and cast member Chevy Chase. What does the man who wants to make people happy do to heal such a damaging wound? He takes his popular podcast on tour, of course – using the love of his dedicated fanbase as a revitalizing salve.
On the face of it, it sounds incredibly narcissistic, egotistical, and perhaps even desperate. In reality though, with this trailer, it is a beautiful thing to watch. Harmon is not only a refreshingly honest voice in relation to Hollywood as a whole, but also in relation to the human race,...

Neil Berkeley's hilarious road documentary "Harmontown," which was a hit at SXSW 2014, will get a fall theatrical and VOD release in North America and the U.K. via The Orchard, an indie music, film and video distributor and multi-channel network. The film showcases "Community" creator Dan Harmon on tour with his podcast as well as Jason Sudeikis and Joel McHale, among others. Harmon prepped for "Community" by writing for shows such as “The Sarah Silverman Program” and the Jack Black/Ben Stiller pilot “Heat Vision and Jack.” Silverman, Black and Stiller also appear in the film (The Playlist review here). Co-produced by Future You Pictures and Starburns Industries, "Harmontown" follows self-deprecating cynic Harmon after he's fired from the hit series he created and takes his writing on the road, performing live podcasts for his fans around the country. Within seconds after sitting down to watch "Harmontown," you will notice that the doc is brought to you by "Starburns Industries." For those in the know, the production company is paying homage to one of the bit characters played by Dino Stamatopoulos on the TV show "Community." Those who watch the show will get a lot out of "Harmontown," and there may just be something for everyone else.
Dan Harmon is the comedic genius behind programs like "The Sarah Silverman Show," and the cult pilot one-off "Heat Vision and Jack," but his baby is "Community." The NBC art-sitcom experiment has been a massive underground hit, rewarding endless fanboys and girls with rapid-fire cultural references, endearing nerdy characters and non-stop punchy one-liners. Before Dan Harmon created "Community" on NBC or "The Sarah Silverman Program" on Comedy Central, he formed Channel 101 in 2003 with Rob Schrab -- when the pair were "banished from legitimate television" after created the pilot "Heat Vision and Jack" for Fox. Channel 101 is a monthly Los Angeles short film festival/non-televised television network to which participants submit five-minute TV pilots that are judged and rated by a live audience, with only the winners going on to make new episodes. It is, as the event's website catchily puts it, "a chance to sit in the worn-out chair of the fat network exec, drunk on the blood of lowly artists whose right to exist is given in exchange for their ability to nourish." It appears NBC’s former problem child, Dan Harmon may have found a new home. TV Guide reported earlier today that the former Community showrunner is close to a deal to bring an untitled multi-camera comedy pilot to Fox, his first major move since being booted from the NBC clever-but-cult-favorite comedy he created. Harmon is also hard at work in developing an animated series called Rick & Morty for Adult Swim.
Since becoming a darling with fans and some of the media, New Girl has expanded Fox’s idea of what makes for a good comedy. For one, it’s Not animated. Animated series are not a bad thing, but outside of Raising Hope, and before New Girl was a hit, the only comedies Fox seemed willing to develop were spinoffs of Family Guy. The climate is changing at Fox as former Community executive producers Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan are...

Ousted Community showrunner Dan Harmon may have found a new home at Fox. The network that was home to Harmon's 1999 pilot Heat Vision and Jack is near a deal with Harmon for a comedy pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. As first reported by TV Guide, the project would likely be a multicamera effort, a departure from Community's single-camera model. Details about the premise of the project are being kept under wraps. Known for his rousing performance as a wannabe rock star in School of Rock and his outrageous HBO series (and band) Tenacious D, his voice is also heard in the animated blockbusters Ice Age and Kung Fu Panda. Here are five things you may not know about Jack Black, whose new dark comedy Bernie features him portraying a flamboyant Texas mortician who ends up killing a wealthy widow.

It's generally agreed that television is as good as it's ever been. Of course, there's a lot of rubbish on, as there always was, but virtually every night, year round, brings more quality comedy and drama than you could possibly hope to watch. The next few weeks alone bring the return of "Mad Men" and "Game of Thrones," two of the most acclaimed cable dramas of recent years, while "Justified" and "Luck" -- muscular, cinematic long-form tales as strong as anything the big screen has seen recently -- wrap up their seasons. Meanwhile, other favorites like "Breaking Bad," "Louie" and "Homeland" will be back before the year is out, along, we hope, with a raft of excellent new shows.
And the likelihood is that you've been watching some, if not all of these shows. The cinephile who says "Oh, I don't watch television" is becoming an increasingly rare breed. But amongst all of this,...

I would love if I could tell you every moment of the "Community" panel at Paleyfest in detail. I'd love if I could run quote after hilarious quote by you. I'd love if I could explain in detail a lengthy story creator Dan Harmon told about how the character of Troy went from white in the original script to being played by African-American Donald Glover, a story that ranged all over the place from concepts of political correctness to the idea of race neutrality in network casting to his famous, not-picked-up pilot "Heat Vision and Jack," a story that went on...

Welcome back, class! Hope 2010 (Two thousand and ten, not twenty-ten, right?) has been treating you splendidly so far, which, unfortunately, was not the case with Community's first mid-season episode. Like the college student who's returned from winter break and suddenly has to wake up before noon again, the show seemed to be in a bit of a fog. To me, it was going through the motions without complete conviction, and it introduced a comedy tradition that it honestly didn't need -- the big celebrity guest star. Jack Black frequently straddles the thin line between genius (School of Rock) and...

Much like the rest of the college youth, Community makes it’s return to school this week, starting up the Spring semester with new stories, new laughs, and even new faces. Kicking off the second half of this season, guest star Jack Black will be stopping by to play. . . Jack Black?
Well, not really. Black is playing Buddy, a fellow classmate of the Spanish study group’s. This character breaks into song at random times, skats, and jumps around impishly, which is the exact opposite of the Jack Black we’ve come to know. In the episode, Buddy tries to join in on the study group, seeing all the fun they have, buy ends up causing more harm than help.
It’s not that outrageous that Black would guest star on an NBC sitcom. Not only did he have a quirky cameo in an episode of The Office, but he...

Religion is sometimes a touchy subject to discuss in social situations, let alone in something as widely viewed as network TV. This is why most comedy programming vows to stay away from the taboo subject, in order to play nice with the millions of potential viewers. Luckily, NBC’s Community doesn’t seem to care about taboo, and they prove it in this week’s episode.
The mid-season break is coming up after this week, which means there’s even more pressure added to the final Community episode of 2009. The episode, entitled “Comparative Religion”, has Greendale College doing a “Christmas” theme for the last week of final exams. Also, special guest Anthony Michael Hall stops by to harass the gang as the stereotypical school bully.

Last night saw the debut on NBC of Community, the new half-hour sitcom notable for starring The Soup quickstepper, Joel McHale, and parting the prime time waters for Chevy "Nugent, Ted Nugent" Chase. Based on the premiere, Community looks to introduce a sweet-hearted strain of politically incorrect irreverence to the Big 3 as a reaction to cable's shenanigans. This is not really a surprise since the show was created and produced by Dan Harmon, whose credits include The Sarah Silverman Show and the axed Jack Black treasure, Heat Vision and Jack. Earlier this month, the pilot was rolled out on Facebook and the PS3, and today we'd like to know what you thought. Some of my early impressions after the jump... Fans of The Soup rejoice! This week alone, we not only get punchy host Joel McHale on the E! clip show, but also in theaters alongside Matt Damon in The Informant and on the very first episode of NBC’s Community. Thankfully, the show looks like it has potential to stick around for quite some time, playing partner to other NBC hits like The Office and 30 Rock.
