It's been over 3-1/2 years since we first heard about Ramzi Abed's suspenseful and mind-bending film Telephone World, but now that it's being released in July by Cinema Epoch, we've hit the mother lode with new stills, artwork, trailer, and more!
The film, which was written and directed by Abed (The Devil's Muse, Noirland), stars Elissa Dowling (Dread), Chandler Maness (Orgy of Blood), Kara Hyatt (Noirland), Tamarah Murley (A Four-Course Meal), and Eric Fleming (The Devil's Muse).
It arrives on DVD July 22nd. Abed described it to us as "very creepy and unnerving, as well as sad and affecting."
Look for a review from Doctor Gash soon!

If Charles Band were a pro wrestler, I’d like to think his entrance music would be Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”. Four new little beasties will be added to his repertoire when Unlucky Charms begins filming any moment now.

We've been talking about Ramzi Abed's Telephone World for quite some time, and we now have the chance to see the first ten minutes, which are primarily in the form of the opening titles of the film with original music by The Bystanders. Abed promises the entire film will be premiering soon.
As he told us previously, "This project is drenched in suspense and is beyond voyeuristic also. It has things happen in it that I've never seen before ever, including the opening shot, which is of a camera being thrown and bounced down several blocks of Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, and the main body of the film, which was shot in one continuous live shot in one single take in multiple video formats. Not to mention some of the sound design created and being created by sound genius Borja Sau (Portland, Box of Shadows). It's chock full of surprises.

It was just about a year ago when we first heard about writer/director Ramzi Abed's latest project, Telephone World, and now we have an update for you along with the official teaser trailer.
Abed says that Telephone World is easily his best film. He continues, "I just locked picture, visual fx, and color-correction, and I can't believe it. Although the movie needs to get into its final audio sweetening, even with the first full rough sound mix... it's mind-blowing. Elissa Dowling (Abolition, The Theatre Bizarre, Dread) elicits a performance unrivaled by any other actor or actress I've seen in a movie ever. Yes, I said 'ever'. It should really and truly have people questioning what they are seeing. More so than any reality horror film before it, this project takes you into a world that is, for all intents and purposes, completely real. It's drenched in suspense and is beyond voyeuristic also.

In the world of experimental filmmaking, one name keeps popping up: indie auteur Ramzi Abed. Today Ramzi dropped us a line about yet another new project he's working on, Telephone World, which the writer/director describes as both intense and quite special.
Synopsis:
"People die. People get hurt. Life is always on the line."
It’s been a long time since a film has played with the notion of reality so much while also crafting an emotionally riveting suspense film, but that is exactly what Ramzi Abed’s newest feature film, Telephone World, is made to do.
Telephone World tells the story of Rachel Plasky (Elissa Dowling), who finds out she got the lead part in a new TV show called "Fairfax Girls". The main body of the film is shot in one continuous 80-minute shot. All of the action happens in one single take with real phone calls and answering messages occurring in real-time.

Director C.M. Downs dropped us a line with an update on Fetch, the new feature he's working on for DrippingDead Films. Casting is now complete for the film, which was written by Trent Haaga and is gearing up to commence principal photography on January 9th in Easton, Kansas.
Downs describes Fetch as "a terrifying story of six cross-country campaigning cheerleaders who have been abducted in rural Alabama." It stars Christina DeRosa as Starlene Arbuckle, Shawn G. Who's making such proclamations? Who else but Halo-8 Entertainment, one of the few companies around that still manages to create and distribute daring new films.
And In a Spiral State, described as a meditation on Hollywood self-destruction, angelic interventions, and the string theory, sounds nothing if not daring. Here's a brief synopsis:
In a Spiral State portrays Los Angeles through the eyes of Daya (Ofri Fuchs), an angel who's become mesmerized by the city's interconnected yet utterly isolated inhabitants, particularly its struggling and flawed artists, frauds, drug addicts, and murderers. A second angel Gadi (Adam Meir) is unable to prevent Daya from interfering in their lives, as this empathetic angel is drawn into the frightening and twisted machinations of the city's underbelly.

Just a few days ago we got word about a new week-long run of horror and punk films called "8 Films To Kill For: Halo-ween Fest". Well, today we heard from Halo-8 Entertainment that due to legal pressure from After Dark Films, promoter of the Horrorfest 8 Films to Die For, they've renamed the event to "Halo-8: Films That Kill".
As Halo-8 president Matt Pizzolo explains in his blog Hollywood 2.0, "We weren't ripping them off, we were mocking them. I don't think trademark law is intended to prevent people from making fun of you. I tend to assume our audience is pretty smart, so it never occurred to me they might think we were actually part of that festival … I wouldn't want to cause confusion and accidentally tarnish our reputation." *insert cat fight noises here* Pizzolo goes on to say, "I suppose it wasn’t the cleverest name in the world,...

One new movie I haven't heard much about until now is Ramzi Abed's The Devil's Muse, but that's all about to change. On September 30th Halo-8 Entertainment is releasing a deluxe two-disc set of the film. It'll be packed with goodies including a full-length soundtrack CD composed by David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) and Ego Plum (Nicktoons' Making Fiends).
So, what's The Devil's Muse about? Halo-8 provided this summary:
When beautiful young actress Lisa Small (Kristen Kerr of David Lynch's Inland Empire) is cast as the tragic victim known as The Black Dahlia in a film about Hollywood's most famous unsolved murder, an entire dreamworld awakens around her. Meanwhile, a local sociopath has set out on a copycat murder spree timed out with the 60th anniversary of the original killing. A spider's web grows around Lisa as her nightmares and desires intersect with the death toll rising around her.

Reacting to his multiple nominations for Million Dollar Baby, Clint Eastwood said in a statement, "I want to thank the Academy for their kind recognition not only on my behalf, but on behalf of this remarkable film. It's always very gratifying to be recognized by your peers and even more so when that recognition is shared by such a wonderful team of creative professionals. This is a very personal film for me and for everyone involved, and we deeply appreciate the Academy's support." * * * * She woke up in New York with "a bit of a jolt," but best actress nominee for Million Dollar Baby Hilary Swank seemed as grounded and level-headed as ever. "I'm just lucky to be a working actor," Swank demurred. "So many of my friends can't even get parts. I'm just trying to think of what I did to deserve it all." If she's weary of being asked questions about going up against Annette Bening in the best actress Oscar race again, Swank doesn't show it. "Annette blows my mind, she's such an inspiration, and a very generous woman." And although Swank has been touted as an Oscar nominee for months, she said she had yet to decide on what she's going to wear. "I'll probably wear Calvin Klein), I have a contract with them, but I don't know anything about it yet, I didn't have any reason to plan." Oh, c'mon, you were always a shoo-in! "The only thing I know is to never expect to be a shoo-in ... anywhere." Swank's next project is Brian DePalma's Black Dahlia. After playing two unvarnished characters who take a fair amount of onscreen licks, Swank's enthusiasm for her next role beams straight through the phone, "I get to play a femme fatale".

Scott Steindorff's Stone Village Pictures has optioned the rights to James Ellroy's recently published collection of stories Destination: Morgue! L.A. Tales. Ellroy will adapt the material. Destination encompasses 14 pieces, some fictional and some based on real-life incidents about Los Angeles. The book includes three novellas that focus on a tough-skinned LAPD cop who is assigned to a case involving a famous actress being stalked. "James Ellroy is extremely intelligent and has an unusual perspective on life," said Steindorff, who will produce. "That's why his books are so compelling. He just knows everything about Los Angeles, and he really gets under the skin of his characters, which is what makes them so memorable." Upcoming projects for Stone Village include the HBO pic Empire Falls, based on Richard Russo's novel, and The Tortilla Curtain, with Kevin Costner and Meg Ryan and based on T.C. Boyle's novel. Steindorff also is remaking Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru with DreamWorks, to star Tom Hanks and to be directed by Jim Sheridan. Steindorff also is an executive producer on the NBC series Las Vegas. Ellroy, whose film credits include L.A. Confidential and Black Dahlia, is writing The Man Who Kept Secrets, a biopic about Hollywood lawyer Sydney Korshak that William Friedkin is attached to direct. He is repped by Joel Gotler and Intellectual Property Group.
