The 100th Season's Last Night of the Proms showcases the concert held in September 1994, conducted by Andrew Davis (who led the festivities in Proms before and since), and featuring percussionist Evelyn Glennie and opera singer Bryn Terfel.
In those days there were still longer pieces tried on the Last Night, and this is no exception, with Walton's Balthazar's Feast, a tour de force for Terfel and the mighty Chorus of the LSO. Then two sparky pieces for Glennie to play, a lovely Massanet solo from the Leader of the Orchestra, Michael Davis, and the usual burst of patriotic fervour in Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.
This performance has all the energy and charm of a live Last Night - it might not have been one of the great ones, but it is memorable, and good to see again on DVD.
