Castles: Cool-Looking Fortresses
ccthemovieman-114 September 2009
This is almost one of the those "All You Ever Wanted To Know About...." episodes, at least in regards to castles. The Dungeons part of the show is only touched upon lightly. That was fine; I'd rather see a beautiful castle and understand why and how it was built than learn about torture.

Castles might look cool but, as the narrator says right off: "Sleeping Beauty doesn't have the guts to live here." (I'll let you check out this Modern Marvels episode to discover why he said that.) Anyway, beginning with the 13th century Conway Castle, we learn why a castle needed to be used in various ways. (One hint: the imposing structure was there to protect territory. The word "castle" means fortress.)

The program then backtracks to show and explain why the first castles were built around the 10th century in France. While there, we visit the Lincoln Castle and are educated about why a castle and its immediate area is designed the way it is. I found it very interesting.

The "keep" of the castle is the dungeon, and although pictured brutally in movies, it didn't seem as bad on this show. Maybe they wanted to spare us gory details.

Anyway, this episode is a good one and definitely worth watching.
