I still remember this...
Scarfacefan52228 April 2004
I'm probably the only person that actually remembers the Sports Cartoon shorts that would air in the morning and afternoon. It's been many years since i've actually seen it air but i still remember them vividly. Particularly the Hippo and that fat short blue cat with the huge red nose. The Hippo was more of the humble type where as the cat was the mischievious and always tried screwing up hippo. Some episodes that stand out in my mind included a hockey edition where basicly it was a team of all the fat short blue cats and the humble hippos. another included a golf edition...basicly all sports. The Olympics was featured as well as well as many others. Most might not remember but i'm one of the very few that still do...

Absolutely freaking hilarious Nickelodeon classic!

SPORTS CARTOONS, in my opinion, is an absolutely freaking hilarious Nickelodeon classic! I haven't seen it in a while, but I still enjoyed it. It's hard to say which one was my favorite. There are so many funny cartoons that it's hard to choose. However, I think it was always funny when the cat laughed at the hippo or the hippo scored. I always got hard laughs out of this. If you ask me, it would be funny if cats could do that to each other. Don't get me wrong, because I'm not for animal cruelty. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that I always got hearty laughs out of it, and the animation and drawing were very nice. In conclusion, I hope it comes back on Nickelodeon really soon.

Sports Cartoons: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways....
vertigo_1424 July 2004
I remember watching Sports Cartoons when I was a kid, renting it nearly every Saturday much to the dismay of my grandpa who would plea with me to pick something else.

Sports Cartoons parodied nearly any sport you can think of, from tennis to karate to hot air balloon navigation (if you call it a sport). The stories often had little morals like don't cheat and junk like that, but they were simplistic and just meant for a few laughs to entertain kids. There was no dialogue, just short sequences of sporting events among the selected animal characters. Often, there was the idyllic hippo who basically enjoyed everything around him. He wasn't stupid, just pleasant and often the target of pranks by the little twin blue cats who often tried to get the hippo angry, to no avail, and using getting their comeuppance in the end. There was the smart dog who I can only remember from the hot air balloon and tennis sequences, and the little wart hog looking thing (it may've been a pig...I don't remember any horns) who usually had some trouble with the sports and, too, was the target of the twin cats.

I remember one tennis sequence where the cats were playing double against the hippo and the dog. The dog ran all over the court to swing at the ball while the hippo stood off to the side admiring a fluttering butterfly (even yawning so hard at one point that he caught the butterfly in his mouth). The cats, angered that the hippo never did anything and was having such a swell time just looking at this butterfly floating around, that they tried to swing away his object of interest with their tennis rackets. In the end though, the hippo, angered that the cats would swing their rackets at the butterfly, finally (and I think the only time in the whole movie he gets angry) huffs and puffs and swings back at the cats. As usual, their crass attempts to annoy someone backfired.

There were a lot of funny cartoons and 'Sports Cartoons' is one that I will always remember and always love, no matter how old I get. Unfortunately, it looks like very few people are aware of it (I notice only one review as I write this) and it is so hard to get a hold of, if at all. It's really a nice children's cartoon. Vive Sports Cartoons!

Long Lost Favorite.

They'd use to show these cartoons on Nick all the time back in the early 90s. Sports Cartoons' title says it all. A collection of sport related shorts revolving on Hippos, Blue Cats, Dogs, & Pigs.

The Hippos are carefree and are alway see as the ones winning the game.

The Blue Cats are mischievous and never play fair. Occasionally you'd see the kind who are as big as the hippos and are just as devilish as the regular size cats.

The pigs are always seen going up against the cats. When I was little, I kept thinking they were smaller hippos.

And there's the dog, who is always seen as the referee. And sometimes plays along with the hippos and pigs.

There's 45 shorts in total. Completely word-less dialog. And it's entirely G rated. I didn't know the name of this series of shorts up till now. And even though it's forgotten and co-existed. Sports Cartoons remains one of my long time favorites from the original Nick. It's funny, original, and unique.

I'll keep my hopes up for a DVD release on the whole series. It's something the whole family can watch again and again.

Classic Stuff

I am also quite fond of these shorts. Although i cant say i seen all 45, i do remember the charm and the simplicity from the ones i do remember. Every month or so, i still check online to see if i can find these cartoons somewhere, anywhere online!! The cats were by far my favourite, always sly, creative, dishonest in their ways, and always coming up short despite their "winning way" ideas. The dart episode in particular, the hippo requiring silence and concentration and the cat making all kinds of noise behind him, acting out a plane crash, a trombone, meows, hitting the floor, its simple cartooning, like the early tom and Jerry's. No dialogue, no words, simple, fun, its classic, timeless, and hopefully out on DVD on day :(
