On his radio show A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor used to refer amusingly to “Norwegian Bachelor Farmers” who resided in his (make believe) hometown of Lake Wobegon, Minnesota.
Not only was the town fictional, so were those putative Norwegian yeomen. For a real-life, honest-to-goodness, authentic Scandinavian Bachelor Farmer, you can turn to the documentary As the Tide Comes In, which recently made its world premiere at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (better known as IDFA). The film directed by Juan Palacios principally revolves around Gregers, the last farmer inhabiting remote Mandø, an island in Denmark’s Wadden Sea.
Mandø, measuring only 8-square kilometers, isn’t easy to access.

While it is unfortunate that director William Friedkin could not be in attendance for the world premiere of what turned out to be his final film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, that hasn’t stopped behind-the-scenes stories from coming out. As revealed at the Venice International Film Festival, none other than Guillermo del Toro was on set as Friedkin’s backup director.
Speaking in Venice (as per Variety), producer Annabelle Dunne said, “That’s very common, Hollywood is ageist.” She added that she ran the idea by Friedkin ahead of filming The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, who mulled it over before telling her, “Ok, honey I have the guy. Get a pen: it’s Guillermo Del Toro, you got that?” According to Dunne, del Toro was adamant about being on set every day, no matter what his duties were (or weren’t). “It was joy for all of us, including the actors,...

After producing such movies as The Tree of Life, 12 Years a Slave, Brokeback Mountain, A Prairie Home Companion, and Into the Wild, Bill Pohlad returned to the director’s chat with his Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy. Given his growing tendency to line up half of Hollywood to appear in his films, anyone cast in a Wes Anderson movie might worry just how much screen time they’ll end up getting.
Not Fisher Stevens.
After minor roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel (a concierge), Isle of Dogs (the voice of a mutt called Scrap) and The French Dispatch (an unnamed magazine story editor), he’s now set to make a similarly background appearance in Asteroid City, Anderson’s latest, and featuring arguably the director’s most ludicrous array of top-tier talent to date (a list so long, it may test the wide lenses of Cannes’ red carpet paparazzi when it bows May 23). And very happily so.
“I’m around. I mean, you’ll see me in the film. But I wouldn’t say it’s my Oscar-winning performance,” Stevens tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it or not,...

Who would have thought 30 years ago Meryl Streep would become the musical diva of our age? Maybe those who watched her bashfully (and beautifully) sing “You Don’t Know Me” in 1990’s Postcards from the Edge. But largely she was associated with the serious dramas of the ‘70s and ‘80s that won her two Oscars (and saw her nominated for three more) by the time she was 35: Kramer vs. Kramer, The Deer Hunter, Sophie’s Choice. Sober-eyed tearjerkers all.
But an amazing thing happened in the 21st century, didn’t it? Streep, the First Lady of the Academy Awards stage, reinvented herself as the prima donna of the musical-comedy. Sometimes that includes performances so rich that they sing even without any lyrics, such as the imperious Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. But often they come with music and verse too, be it ham-fisted kitsch like Mamma Mia! or something...

We don’t really think of Robert Altman’s Nashville as a musical. To be fair, it both is and it isn’t. As is trademark for the director, the film is focused on character first to reveal its themes, exposing a distinctly American disposition both in its specific social strata and in the grander national sense. But Nashville isn’t always interested in doing so through song. Even taking place in the country music world, music feels like an equal contributor to Altman’s portraiture as any of the ensemble members.
Viewers wanting Altman to languor in the thematic sway of a musical’s tunes will always have A Prairie Home Companion. Instead here he upends genre traditions much as he does general narrative ones. Musicals are a genre that even at its best can still feel the least spontaneous, and spontaneity is a definitive Altman trait.

In the summer of 1975, in the middle of recording his album “Desire,” Bob Dylan decided that he wanted to go on tour again, but that he also wanted a break. A break from the crowds, from the press scrutiny, maybe even from his own stardom. So in the fall of that year, he launched the Rolling Thunder Revue, a knowingly small-time ramble of a concert tour that was designed, from the outset, to be a kind of antiquated floating carnival of down-home traveling players. Call it “A Prairie Home Companion” meets Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The venues wouldn’t be sold-out arenas, like the ones that Dylan had played, along with the Band, to rapturous audiences the year before. They would be concert halls in places like Plymouth, Mass., and Rochester, N.Y., and Bangor, Maine. And though the tour was billed on posters as an all-star counterculture revue,...

Leon Redbone showcased the music that led to rock and roll in the rock era and maintained his mystery throughout.
Cult singer Leon Redbone, best known for his Panama hat, dark sunglasses and Frank Zappa mustache and goatee, died on Thursday of causes as-yet unknown. The guitar-playing singer's age was officially announced as 127, but according to Variety, was 69.
“He departed our world with his guitar, his trusty companion Rover and a simple tip of his hat,” Redbone's family said in a statement. “He’s interested to see what Blind Blake, Emmett and Jelly Roll have been up to in his absence, and has plans for a rousing singalong number with Sári Barabás. An eternity of pouring through texts in the Library of Ashurbanipal will be a welcome repose, perhaps followed by a shot or two of whiskey with Lee Morse, and some long overdue discussions with his favorite Uncle,...

Meryl has been a superstar for 40 years now
Matthew: You never forget the performers who first reach out to you from an illuminated screen and lay claim to your gaze, mind, and devotion. Before I knew anything about the art of screen acting, I knew about the miraculous and almost mythic marvel that is Meryl Streep. Months of Meryl was an undertaking that exhausted and aggravated me without end: for every unparalleled Silkwood in Streep’s filmography, there are at least two The House of the Spirits; for every forgotten or underrecognized gem like The Seduction of Joe Tynan, One True Thing, or A Prairie Home Companion, there are at least three Still of the Nights, Primes, or Dark Matters. But, more importantly, this project illuminated a great deal about a veteran artist whose empathetic interest in the lives...

“The kids need a future,” a city council member tells Dorothea (Tyne Daly) half way through the first of Patrick Wang’s two-part A Bread Factory: “they need to learn about the world.” Forty years prior to the exchange, Dorothea and her partner Greta (Elizabeth Henry-Macari) bought a bakery in the fictional upstate New York town of Checkford, and turned it into the Bread Factory, an arts center the married couple has fought hard to keep afloat through the years. Cash and funds have historically been finite and resources volatile—but while stage director Dorothea and actress Greta powered through the decades with indomitable determination and grit, the creation of a bigger arts institute in the opposite side of town, led by a couple of world-renowned Chinese performance artists, May Ray (Janet Hsieh and George Young), is poised to spell the end of the Factory’s illustrious work. The center...

Happy 72nd Birthday, Tommy Lee Jones! Though he has played his share of rednecks in films, the Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Award winner is in real life a top-notch polo player and famously was Vice President Al Gore‘s roommate while both were studying at Harvard. Jones is an actor who is always full of surprises.
Having gotten his start acting in soap operas and independent films, Jones quickly moved up the ladder, earning his first Golden Globe nomination as singer Loretta Lynn‘s husband in “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (opposite Academy Award champ Sissy Spacek). As his work continued to grow, so did Jones’ trophy case. In his film career of over four decades, Jones earned four Oscar nominations three Golden Globe nominations (also including a win for “The Fugitive”) and four Screen Actors Guild nominations (including two SAG trophies for 2007’s “No Country For Old Men” and 2012’s “Lincoln”).

Matthew: If the one-two punch of A Prairie Home Companion and The Devil Wears Prada in 2006 represent a high-water mark for Meryl Streep then 2007 might very well be the single oddest year in the actress’ career. How else to explain Streep’s decision to accept secondary and even tertiary parts in four independent-to-midrange projects that not a single Streep enthusiast has ever had the inclination to hold up alongside her most acclaimed or memorable works? Streep spent part of the prior year accepting prizes for Prada and, most excitingly, playing one of the all-time greatest characters in theater history on the outdoor stage of the Delacorte. During that period, Streep also found time to dip her toes into the murky waters of post-9/11 cinema for a second time, following...

Matthew: Two of the most revered artists in American cinema history, Robert Altman and Meryl Streep each built their lauded careers by probing into characters from countless corners of the world, driven by an ardent and undiminished interest in the micro — but never minor — idiosyncrasies of collective human behavior. For those who believe in the supernatural forces of fate, there is something undeniably kismetic in Streep and Altman’s first collaboration, which would turn out to be this mighty auteur’s valedictory effort. A Prairie Home Companion, Altman’s final film, is a moving backstage comedy that sketches out the (fictional) final broadcast of the historic and beloved Minnesota radio variety show of the title, created and hosted by Garrison Keillor, who also scripted the picture.

The state of Minnesota abounds with diverse shooting locations, from the modern urban skyscrapers of Minneapolis, to the small-town feel of Saint Paul, to a countryside dotted with thousands of lakes, to a rugged wilderness stretching to the Canadian border. Also available: a rebate of 20% or 25% on qualified spend, in addition to multiple local incentives.
Other Minnesota landmarks of interest: the iconic Mall of America, the Walker Art Center and the world-famous Guthrie Theater. Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” radio show is also a homegrown Minnesota institution.
Often dubbed “snowbate” because if its northern location, Minnesota’ rebate program includes a 20% rebate for productions spending a minimum of $100,000 and a 25% rebate for productions spending a minimum of $1 million.
Regional incentives are available on top of the state incentive. The compensation cap for non-resident above-the-line workers is $100,000.

This article marks Part 14 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
The three years following “Adaptation” (2002) did not produce an Oscar nomination for Meryl Streep – her longest drought since the early 1990s, following “Postcards from the Edge” (1990). That is not to say, of course, that these years were without substantial Streep contributions to the big and small screens and stage.
Sans a brief cameo portraying herself in the Matt Damon–Greg Kinnear conjoined twins comedy “Stuck on You,” Streep did not grace the silver screen in 2003. She did, however, hit the television circuit in a big way with her reunion alongside filmmaker Mike Nichols on the HBO production of Tony Kushner‘s “Angels in America.

“A Prairie Home Companion” is dead. Keillor informed the AP of his firing in an email. He did not include details of the allegations, but said it was “a story that I think is more interesting and more complicated than the version Mpr heard.”
“Mpr takes these allegations seriously and we are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful and supportive work environment for all employees and everyone associated with Mpr,” the station said in a statement. Mpr also said it is ending its business relationships with Keillor immediately, including “distribution and broadcast of ‘The Writer’s Almanac’ and rebroadcasts of ‘The Best of A Prairie Home Companion.'”

November’s annual eight-day AFI Fest can be an effective launch-pad for Oscar-bound late-year movies such as “American Sniper” and “Selma,” and this year is no exception. Festival director Jacqueline Lyanga has chosen Netflix Sundance debut “Mudbound” to open the festival on November 9, following another showing at the New York Film Festival and just before its day-and-date debut November 17 in theaters and on Netflix.
The streaming service carries high awards hopes for the acclaimed Dee Rees post-World War II drama co-written by Virgil Williams and Rees about two farming families in the rural South, starring Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, and an unrecognizable Mary J. Blige. Set in the Mississippi Delta, the period drama features stunning epic cinematography by AFI Conservatory alumna Rachel Morrison. When looking at a director’s canon upon its completion and in its entirety, the final piece of work is more often than not a key text in the broader understanding of the respective oeuvre. Be it something as relatively modern as Robert Altman’s masterpiece A Prairie Home Companion or a classic gem like the underrated Fritz Lang picture The Thousand Eyes Of Doctor Mabuse, these career-capping works may not be the director’s greatest achievement, but they see the director at a defining moment in their career.
However, few “final films” may be as singularly important in a director’s career as the one that would close out Robert Bresson’s legendary life, L’argent.
Now available on Criterion DVD and Blu-ray, L’argent tells the story of not so much a living character as it does an entity that runs roughshot over the lives of many. Similar...
