Original deep reporting by The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Johnson is getting the true-crime docuseries treatment at Apple TV+.
The streaming giant has picked up the three-parter Hollywood Con Queen from director Chris Smith, based in part on Johnson’s book Hollywood Con Queen: The Hunt for an Evil Genius from Harper Collins.
The docuseries, to premiere May 8, promises an in-depth exploration of a mysterious Indonesian man and the masquerade behind his elaborate Con Queen scam. This was no garden-variety swindler. His criminal exploits eventually drew the attention of THR investigative journalist Johnson and private investigator Nicole Kotsianas as they set out to unmask the serial imposter by tearing back the layers of one of Hollywood’s most elaborate schemes.
As part of Johnson’s original reporting, he interviewed unwitting victims of the Con Queen’s daring schemes, which wreaked havoc across the entertainment industry and impacted a who’s who of Hollywood.

The Latin Grammy-winning Colombian artist J Balvin parked a ginormous inflatable spaceship on Coachella’s main stage Sunday night, kicking off an epic reggaeton rave under the stars.
Balvin opened the festivities with his 2017 moombahton smash, “Mi Gente,” the same song he performed with Beyoncé during her historic Homecoming show — and his Coachella debut. Six years later, Balvin’s catalog has been expanded and blended creatively with different genres, as has reggaeton’s sound. Stationed at the turntables was star producer and reggaeton master Tainy, who integrated spells of house...

As an avid moviegoer, I have always been fascinated with the life and career of John Malkovich. His versatility as an actor is truly remarkable, having portrayed various characters in both theatre and Hollywood. In this blog post, I will take a closer look at Malkovich’s early years in theatre, his big break in Hollywood, his notable performances in theatre, his contributions to the fashion industry, and the future of his career. Let’s begin.
Malkovich’s Early Years in Theatre
John Malkovich was born in Illinois in 1953 and grew up in a family of conservationists. He attended Eastern Illinois University, where he initially studied environmental science, but later changed his major to theatre. Malkovich moved to Chicago after college and became a founding member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He established himself as a talented stage actor in the 1970s and 1980s, earning critical acclaim for his roles...

If you’ve watched Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, you might notice that the cast of the film is somewhat different from that of the first two Ant-Man movies. The main quartet of characters—Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne/Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer)—remains the same, and Scott’s daughter Cassie is also back, now played by Kathryn Newton.
Quantumania also introduces a slew of new characters, such as big bad Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) and the inhabitants of the Quantum Realm. But missing this time are the members of Scott Lang’s X-Con Security crew of thieves-turned-security-experts, including Kurt (David Dastmalchian), Dave (Tip “T.I.” Harris) and, most significantly, Luis (Michael Peña).
Dastmalchian actually has another role in Quantumania, as the voice of the gooey red creature Veb, while Harris has been embroiled in allegations...

Following a several year break, the "Saw" franchise looks to be returning with the eighth installment "Saw Legacy". First reported back in 2013, and bringing onboard writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger last year, it now looks like production on the film is getting ready.
iatse873, the official site for a film and TV union in Toronto, has revealed that filming on a project dubbed "Legacy" is set to take place between September 21st and October 21st in the city.
At the same time it lists Dan Heffner and Oren Kroules as producers, the pair having been on the series since the beginning, and links back to a Saw imdb page. No director or cast members are currently attached to the project.
Kroules previously teased that big announcements could come around the time of Comic-Con 2016 - an event just two weeks away. Could we be getting a cast/director reveal at that time?...

Exclusive: Entertainment shingle Aspen Comics has signed with management and production company Benderspink. The comic book publisher, founded in 2003 by artist Michael Turner, Frank Mastromauro and Peter Steigerwald, has had properties optioned for the screen before and partnered with Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment on comics The Scourge and Dead Man’s Run. Now it’s looking to expand the reach of its IP, which includes best-selling titles Fathom and Soulfire.
“We are starting to rep comic companies because every one outside of DC and Marvel seem to be underutilized,” said Jc Spink, who’ll lead Aspen’s Benderspink team alongside Head of Management Jake Wagner and Scott Stoops.
Stoops has been wooing Aspen since 2013’s Comic-Con, where the company feted the 15th anniversary of its popular Fathom series, about a young woman who discovers she belongs to an ancient aquatic race that can control water. That comic...

The Fall of the Governor is the third book in Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga’s series of novels set in The Walking Dead universe. The new novel is due out in October and the official cover art has been revealed. Jay Bonansinga spoke with us recently and teased what we can expect from The Fall of the Governor:
“It’s going to tie a lot of stuff together, and also open up many cans of worms (and guts). It’s going to be a Zombie-palooza. All the major characters are going to make an appearance… I have been fascinated by Michonne since the moment she showed up with her grisly “pets” in the comic. And here’s a scoop: She’s going to be a major character in Book 3!!!!”

This fall, NBC will unleash its new remake of Bram Stoker’s classic vampire saga Dracula on Friday night TV audiences. The Tudors’ Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the titular character in the series, which has a fair share of diversions from Stoker’s text.
Says executive producer Tony Krantz (24), “We’ve made a number of alterations with regard to the classic Dracula.” One of the biggest twists? In this new take, which premieres Oct. 25 at 10 p.m., Dracula works alongside Van Helsing (played by The River’s Thomas Kretschmann). “In our tale, Dracula and Van Helsing are actually partners,” reveals Krantz.

Each week we take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the home entertainment offerings, reviewing and rating the films and the special features packed onto the discs.

Release of the Week
Oz the Great and Powerful
The Film
Wrenched from the reins of Spider-Man and thrown headlong into the typhoon of anticipation that was the Disney produced prequel to The Wizard of Oz Sam Raimi acquits himself ably here with a wonderful return to Oz.
Two elements serve this film well, the first is the sumptuous production design which looks terribly cluttered on the DVD cover art above but is a visual leap of imagination on screen and is at times jaw-dropping. Raimi keeps a tight hold on the film, and provides a decent guide through the world of Oz and...

Judge Dredd was all but solidified in this teaser poster. Karl Urban’s Dredd as seen here is a mean lean mother who hides in the darkness waiting to make a judgment – even he would put this poster under arrest for disturbing the plain poster peace.

Gervais collaborator gets his own TV pilot, Pegg's Comic-Con costume fetish causes offence, and Russell Brand wants to be a vicar ... so it seems
Best of the week's news
Stephen Merchant is working on his own TV project – his first outside of his partnership with Ricky Gervais. The lanky star is to write and appear in a pilot entitled Hello Ladies, based on his 2011 standup tour of the same name. The pilot – like the standup show – will focus on Merchant's supposed cackhandedness with the opposite sex, and will shoot later this year, according to Deadline. Merchant (who will also executive produce) has written the episode with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, both former writers on the Us version of The Office. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky also worked on the comedy films Year One and Bad Teacher.
Lovers of comedy, look away now: Russell Crowe is to direct a biopic of Bill Hicks.

HollywoodLife.com has learned exclusively a prankster by the name of Skyler Stone set up the flour bomb for Kim Kardashian in Los Angeles March 22. Do you think it's funny or wrong? When Kim Kardashian walked the red carpet for an event at The London hotel in West Hollywood last night, she probably wasn't expecting to film an appearance for a show other than her own. We can exclusively reveal Skyler Stone -- a con artist who once had his own show, Con, on Comedy Central -- had a woman flour bomb Kim, 31, as she was walking the red carpet at an event. We can tell you exclusively it was filmed for a future prank show that will be on TV. Skyler tweeted after the incident, writing, "Ms Kardashian, I'm really sorry, I was trying to bake a cake in the lobby of The London & I dont know what happened.

After making quite a name for himself in creator-owned comics, such as the creepily claustrophic Elk’S Run and the descent-into-madness tale Echoes, Josh Fialkov is now making room for horror in DC’s New 52 and flirting with science fiction in Idw’s Doctor Who series. We got to talking about vampires and their role in the new Dcu, as well as people’s changing perceptions of vampires in general (which of course you can read more about in Famous Monsters Of Filmland 261). And as Fialkov indicates, you can certainly read more and more of his darkly-leaning stories on the comic racks these days…

[1] Atlas Entertainment co-founder Charles Roven put his weight behind such comic book adaptations as Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, and it seems he's not done with the graphic novel format yet. Roven and Atlas Entertainment colleague Alex Gartner have just acquired the movie rights to Langley High, an upcoming book conceived by Benderspink's Jc Spink and Christopher Cosmos about the teenage son of a captured CIA agent. Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman, creators of the vampire romance comic Undying Love, have been tapped to write the big-screen adaptation. More details after the jump. Langley High centers around a student who attends the titular school, located less than two miles away from CIA headquarters. (Which, incidentally, is a real school [2] that actually is about 1.6 miles from the George Bush Center for Intelligence.) When his father is captured in Russia and disavowed by the CIA,...

Written by Jc Spink and Christopher Cosmos, the story centers on a student from Langley High, the school that's located just 1.7 miles from CIA headquarters. After his father is captured in Russia and disavowed as an agent of the CIA, the student teams up with an undercover CIA agent teacher from his high school and ends up on a mission of revenge. The movie will be produced by Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment and Benderspink, which first announced that the property was eyeing a big screen version at this year's Comic-Con International.

San Diego’s annual Comic-Con is mostly known for its major media spectacles, displays and panel discussions by major mainstream Hollywood studios and distributors. Lesser known is the Independent Film Festival that is hosted by and runs concurrently with the larger convention on July 21-24.
The film festival runs in a large meeting room at the Marriott Marquis Hotel and Marina, located right next door to the convention center. Each day kicks off with a “Film School” panel discussion at 10:00 a.m., then packs the late morning, all afternoon and night with independent films from all over the world.
Screenings are blocked by genre, such as Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Horror, Animation and Documentary. There’s also an awards presentation on the 24th, with repeat screenings of the winning films.

What with all the panels and screenings and more that take place during the San Diego Comic-Con, one of the best kept secrets about the show is its International Independent Film Festival (Cci-iff). The lineup for this year's event is now available, and we have for you both the horror/suspense and science fiction/fantasy schedules.
All screenings and panels for the Cci-iff will be held in the Marriott Marquis and Marina, right next door to the Convention Center (next to the Hall A end). Included in this year's schedule is the return of the popular "Comic-Con Film School" panels on all four days, along with an assortment of other film-oriented panel discussions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A special opening night event, the "Cci-iff Meet and Greet" party, will be held on Thursday, July 21, in the foyer outside the Festival room at the Marriott. This event is open to the filmmakers,...

Do you enjoy complex plotting? Subtle subtexts? Movies in which scantily clad people don’t get bitten to pieces by fish? Then you should think twice—actually, make it thrice—before seeing Piranha 3D, which opens this Friday.
Directed by French horror auteur Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, 2006′s The Hills Have Eyes remake) the film’s cast features both an Academy Award winner in Richard Dreyfuss, who cameos as his Matt Hooper character from Jaws in all but name, and an Oscar nominee in Elisabeth Shue, who plays the movie’s sheriff-heroine. But this Arizona-shot tale of prehistoric piranhas feasting upon...

This past weekend at World Horror Con in Brighton, UK, the Horror Writers Association revealed the winners of the 2009 Stoker Awards. The recipients list, for superior achievement in all aspects of horror writing, reads like a who's who, or at least a list of names you should know and will be seeing again.
Also presented was the Lifetime Achievement Award to Brian Lumley and William F. Nolan. The Specialty Press Award went to Ray Russel and Rosalie Parker of Tartarus Press. In addition, the Silver Hammer Award, for outstanding service to the organization, was presented to Kathryn Ptacek while the President's Richard Laymon Service Award went to Vince A. Liaguno.
The awards, named for Dracula scribe Bram Stoker, were special this year in that it was the first time they've been presented outside the North American continent, showing that the Hwa truly strives to be a worldwide entity for horror.

While there have been many rehashes and follow-ups to Bram Stoker’s original Dracula novel, there has never been an official sequel put on paper. Until now.
According to the NY Post, Dacre Stoker, Bram Stoker’s great-grandnephew, has penned a sequel to the original novel along with Long Island screenwriter Ian Holt, which even has the official backing of the Stoker Estate, the first to have such a designation since the original film adaptation starring Bela Lugosi.
Titled Dracula: The Un-Dead, the book was sold to Harper UK, who will handle foreign distribution, and Brian Tart of Dutton, who will handle domestic distribution. The book, which supposedly includes characters and plot threads from Bram Stoker’s own notes, will hit U.S. stands in October 2009. It's also out to studios for a film adaptation. Let the bidding war begin!
