Welcome to the University of Qt.
Without question or the slightest hint of a doubt, I feel wholly comfortable saying that there are more video essays, compilations, montages, and supercuts dedicated to the work of Quentin Tarantino than any other director out there. He has been an object of fascination bordering obsession from the first scene of Reservoir Dogs, and with each new film he releases, the fervor surrounding his mythos only increases. Largely this is due to Qt himself, who’s as good a hype-man as he is a filmmaker, but that’s just one more reason we love him: confidence. Qt knows he’s the shit and he’d be the first person to tell you that if the rest of us would ever shut up about it.
Bottom line, not since perhaps Kubrick has the totality of a director’s career been held in such high regard, nor...

This podcast focuses on Criterion’s Eclipse Series of DVDs. Hosts David Blakeslee and Trevor Berrett give an overview of each box and offer their perspectives on the unique treasures they find inside. In this episode, David and Trevor are joined by Aaron West to conclude their conversation about Eclipse Series 21: Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties. They discuss Sing a Song of Sex, Japanese Summer: Double Suicide and Three Resurrected Drunkards, the final three films in the set.
About the films:
Often called the Godard of the East, Japanese director Nagisa Oshima was one of the most provocative film artists of the twentieth century, and his works challenged and shocked the cinematic world for decades. Following his rise to prominence at Shochiku, Oshima struck out to form his own production company, Sozo-sha, in the early sixties. That move ushered in the prolific period of his career that gave birth to the five films collected here.

Five on Film: D&D and Indie Filmmaking With Zero Charisma Directors Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews
Five On Film is an occasional feature on “Hey You Geeks!!” where directors, writers, actors or just plain awesome advocates of geek culture are asked five questions in line with the theme of their current work. Starting this week, the “Hey You Geeks!!” column will be a bi-weekly companion to the “Hey You Geeks!!” Podcast, carrying over the theme of the week into bonus, in-depth and exclusive content. This weeks episode was the first Indie-Film Geek Out, so in this edition of Five On Film, I chat about Dungeons and Dragons and indie filmmaking with Zero Charisma Director Katie Graham and Writer/Director Andrew Matthews.
Zero Charisma made waves when it premiered at this years South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, and ever since, has been eagerly anticipated by both film fans and gaming geeks alike. From the time its trailer hit the web earlier this year, the...

This week's Last Resort had Lt. Grace Shepherd in the hot seat as she became captain of a "Skeleton Crew" during an emergency repair mission. In a thrilling turn of events, a power player ended up dead and it wasn't who viewers expected.
Our Last Resort Round Table team of TV Fanatic staffers Jim Garner and Christine Orlando are joined once again by Andrew of Film Geek Radio's Dispatches From Sainte Marina podcast to decide if James and Tani have staying power, whether Christine and Kylie are up for the fight, and if Captain Chaplin is too close to the edge.
-------------------------------------------
1. What was your favorite scene?
Andrew: I really liked watching Grace come into her own as temporary captain of the Colorado. It's been a few episodes since we saw some good ol' fashioned torpedo dodging, and watching those nukes spin up is always suspenseful. She's a good tactician,...

No one likes to be "Voluntold." For those of you in the dark about that title, it's a military slang term. If you don't volunteer, well, you'll be voluntold.
This week, our Last Resort Round Table team of TV Fanatic staffers Jim Garner, Carla Day and Christine Orlando are joined by Andrew of Film Geek Radio's Dispatches From Sainte Marina podcast to debate if they would high tail it back home or stick with their Captain.
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Andrew: I really liked the climactic showdown between Chaplin and Brannan. It was a bit heavy-handed, but it perfectly encapsulated so much of what the show is about. Brannan, like most of the show's characters, is acting in what he thinks is in the best interests of his friends, colleagues and nation. The reason Last Resort is working so well right now is that it's...

James Westby is an independent filmmaker in Portland, Oregon. His feature films include Film Geek (2006), The Auteur (2008) and Rid of Me (2011). As a filmmaker, I am increasingly excited for the vast audience the web and on demand services can bring to an independent movie - mine or anyone else's - with a reach far larger than was ever thought possible. But at the same time, I lament the dying of the independent video store, a place where I spent my youth - and much of my adulthood. When I was a boy in Grays Harbor County, Washington, the video store was my version of a repertory movie house. Aside from a lot of (mostly) amazing horror (Romero's Martin and Raimi's Evil Dead were my sister's and my favorites), this is the institution that gave me This is Spinal Tap (my family's first-ever rental title), the masterful Repo Man, and my...

Film geek scoop of the day: Harrison Ford is apparently in early talks to appear in Ridley Scott's new "Blade Runner" movie.
One imagines he would be back as the iconic Rick Deckard, though, of course, that's mere speculation at this point. A "Blade Runner" sequel is at least two years away from coming to fruition, and nothing has been set in stone, including Ford's possible casting.
But if he is involved in Scott's new take on the "Blade Runner" universe, then there's a lot of ways it could play out.
First off: Is Deckard a replicant, or is he not? Purveyors of all 27 director's and producer's cuts will be aware of the long running discussion, sparked by Scott and Ford's "is he or isn't he" flip-flopping through decades of interviews, commentaries, and sly asides. If Ford shows up as an older, grey-haired Deckard, that would seem to suggest no; after all,...

That’s right my extremely flamboyant friend, I’m talking about all the despicable remakes you’ve been force feeding the people you call your audience. Director Tammi Sutton's Eye Candy - 2010 - Year of the Film Geek! I like the way she says that!
2010 was truly an incredible year for film geek! There were countless fantastic films this year, and a great many diverse films, something in every flavour, and something for everyone of all ages. I cannot remember a better year for such rich offerings for filmgoers. I feel privileged to have gotten to see so many great films, it started with late night whispers at Cannes, murderous feats to get to Telluride through Durango, to rushing an early, juvenile, cut of my own film "Isle of Dogs" at Fright Fest, and down to the wire fighting with a stranger's child in Los Angeles over the last DVD copy of 'Toy Story 3' hours ago.

I'd originally planned to put together a list of the ten worst films of the decade, before realizing that it was an all but futile endeavor. There are 200 films, easily, that might qualify for the top ten, and there was no way to really put together a list collaboratively, either. We've all seen terrible movies, but usually, only the reviewing critic has seen them, so we could hardly get together and debate the merits of Larry the Cable Guy (for the record, I'd have probably named Captivityas the worst of the decade, on account of the fact that it made me angrier than a Bruce Banner backseat hate fuck).

Last April I saw a film at the Tribeca Film Festival, enjoyed it, reviewed it, and then promptly forgot all about it. (Hey, I see lots of movies. Sorry!) So imagine my pleasant surprise when a friend pinged me and said "Hey, that porn mockumentary you liked is now up on Amazon's VOD site." The flick at hand is The Auteur, and it comes from the guys who brought you Film Geek a few years back. I was lukewarm on that film, but this one I like a lot more.
I'll include a trailer after the jump, but I should say it right now: Aside from the title, pretty much all of The Auteur is what the kids call "Nsfw." It's an enthusiastically R-rated sex comedy, basically, that feels like the amusing spawn of Christopher Guest and Howard Stern. And if that sounds fun to you, then hooray for you:...
