Due in theaters on January 18, 2013, here’s your first look at Arnold Schwarzenegger in Lionsgate.s The Last Stand (via USA Today).
Schwarzenegger stars as Sheriff Owens, a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction after leaving his Lapd post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with failure and defeat after his partner was crippled. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the hemisphere is hurtling toward the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted car with a hostage and a fierce army of gang members. He is headed, it turns out, straight for Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement will have their last opportunity to make a stand and intercept him before he slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended their 2012 membership invitations today to 176 lucky actors, directors, cinematographers, and other members of the filmmaking industry.
Terrence Malick, who somehow wasn’t already a member, received an invitation, as did fellow directors Rodrigo Garcia and Asghar Farhadi.
For actors, Melissa McCarthy’s invitation continues her incredible post-Bridesmaids rise. In addition, actors Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Andy Serkis, Jessica Chastain, and Octavia Spencer were all invited to be members, among others.
Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003, according to the Academy’s website.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's fast and furious return to the big screen is currently getting underway. The former Governor of California has targeted director Kim Jee-Woon's "The Last Stand" as his first star vehicle since returning to acting, and he won't be alone — he'll have some very notable co-stars joining him for the ride.
Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and "Jackass" host Johnny Knoxville have boarded the cast of "Last Stand," an impressive roster of actors that already includes "Thor" star Jaimie Alexander, "300" villain Rodrigo Santoro and the inimitable Peter Stormare of "Fargo" fame. Also joining the cast is Harry Dean Stanton, perhaps most recently best known for playing the creepy Roman Grant on HBO's "Big Love," but forever in my heart for his ill-fated turn as Brett in Ridley Scott's "Alien."
No specifics on who these new cast members are playing just yet, so we can only speculate for now.

The days of brief cameos in favor of a career in politics are over for Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's back -- not as the Terminator just yet, but in director Kim Jee-Woon's 'The Last Stand.' He also has a bigger role in 'The Expendables 2' than he did in the first. You can check out a photo of him posing with his buddies: Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone here. As for 'The Last Stand,' Lionsgate has released a press release announcing the start of production. It reads: "Lionsgate® (NYSE: Lgf), a leading global entertainment company, is pleased to announce the start of production on Kim Jee-Woon’s The Last Stand, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Today Kim Jee-woon (The Good, the Bad, the Weird and I Saw the Devil) begins shooting his English language debut, The Last Stand. The film is notable for being the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to a starring role. Arnie plays a former Lapd officer now working as a small-town sheriff, who has to deal with a drug kingpin who is fleeing to Mexico and will pass right through his town. The obligatory 'start of production' press release is below, complete with the same plot synopsis [1] we've had for a while. Along with that is the announcement of a few actors who are part of the film, including Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, and one of my personal faves, Harry Dean Stanton. Here's the press release. The final paragraph is the one to skip to if you just want the plot synopsis; sadly it doesn't have any new info about what characters...
