Debut director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform (El Hoyo) makes no apology for its anti-capitalist stance, stark visuals and social metaphors, which in today’s coronavirus era make for very sober and self-reflective viewing. It highlights people’s greed and selfishness in desperate and restrictive circumstances and ironically revolves around food. Indeed it is highly topical, with food stockpiling from stores set against messages on social media about “being kind” and thoughtful.
Much like a cross between Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover with its lavish cooking scenes at the start that have a whiff of malaise about them with their ominous carcasses on display, the decadent and destructive nature of Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise, and the slow-burn dawning of eternal entrapment within four walls like Lenny Abrahamson’s Room and Vincenzo Natali’s Cube, The Platform is instantly designed to unsettle, before the characters have fathomed their situation.

Channing Tatum's Gambit movie is still in development and everyone involved seems excited about the direction that they are looking to take it. You can thank Logan and Deadpool for opening certain doors to make sure this Gambit movie is going to be done right. I honestly think the film could end up being great, especially if they take in the direction that was previously rumored.
According to that rumor, Mr. Sinister is involved with the story they are going to tell and according to a report from Splash Report, the studio is looking at casting Daniel Craig in the role of the villain and if that's true, Craig would be awesome! He is a perfect fit!
If this is true it would reunite Craig and Tatum who worked together in Steven Soderberg's Lucky Logan, which was a fantastic film that you have to see if you haven't already.

Somehow over the years the Hollywood Music in Media Awards have escaped me. Andre Braugher has a pair of Emmy wins for drama and one could easily argue that it's a minor travesty he only won one Emmy for "Homicide: Life on the Street." He's mastered a wide range of portrayals of heroes who are stern, capable and flawed, giving them authentic, raw life. And at least for the foreseeable future, it's going to be hard to interview Andre Braugher without suddenly finding humor in his thoughtful and entirely earnest answers. Captain Ray Holt on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" isn't Braugher's first role to feature humor. As he correctly notes, "Men of a Certain Age" offered him the chance to get humane, ego-free laugher and earned him two Emmy nominations, though they were technically for drama. Braugher's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" nomination was his first for comedy and was a recognition of how swiftly Braugher has eased into the rhythm of the single-cam and how instantly proficient...

The Television Academy of Arts & Sciences released this year's Emmy ballots on Monday. Now that the ballots are out, it's time for our annual two-pronged experiment, in which Dan tries to predict the likeliest nominees in each major category, while I pretend that I'm an actually TV Academy member and pick the six nominees that would make me the happiest. We are, as always, playing by the Emmy rules, which means we can't argue for someone who didn't submit themselves (say, Donald Glover for "Community"), can't move someone from lead to supporting or vice versa, and can't declare that "True Detective" is a miniseries and therefore clear more room in the drama categories. I'm also obviously limited by what I watched and what I haven't. I think I saw maybe three episodes of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" this season, for instance, and while I like the show a lot,...

‘Ender’s Game’ movie to go the way of ‘John Carter,’ ‘The Golden Compass’? (Photo: Ben Kingsley and Asa Butterfield in ‘Ender’s Game’) Directed by Gavin Hood and starring Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford, Ender’s Game is going the way of Andrew Stanton’s John Carter and Chris Weitz’s The Golden Compass at the domestic box office. After opening with a disappointing $27.01 million last weekend (including Thursday evening shows), the $110 million-budgeted was down a whopping 62% this past weekend, November 8-10, 2013, collecting a paltry $10.25 million from 3,407 theaters (no reduction in number of venues) according to box office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. One can blame Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World, but the action fantasy starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston wasn’t the sole culprit. After all, Ender’s Game was already trailing both Last Vegas and Bad Grandpa last Thursday. After two weekends,...

Emmy winner Andre Braugher is joining Andy Samberg in an untitled Fox comedy pilot from "Parks and Recreation" producers Mike Schur and Dan Goor.
The single camera comedy follows a diverse group of New York City detectives and Braugher will play the precinct's Captain.

If the show is picked up, it would mark Braugher's first series regular gig on a half-hour comedy. He won two Emmys -- for NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" in 1998 and FX's miniseries "Thief" in 2006 -- and garnered additional nominations for HBO's movie "The Tuskegee Airmen," ABC's medical drama "Gideon's Crossing" and TNT's dramedy "Men of a Certain Age."

Exclusive: Netflix and Mrc are beefing up the upper ranks of drama House Of Cards going into Season 2. David Manson has come on board as executive producer to work alongside showrunner Beau Willimon. The David Fincher drama starring Kevin Spacey received a straight two-season pickup by Netflix when the streaming service outbid HBO for the rights to the adaptation of the BBC miniseries. Season 1 premiered this past weekend, with Netflix making all 13 episodes available at the same time. Filming on Season 2 is expected to begin this spring. Manson recently served as executive producer/showrunner on AMC’s Richard Lagravenese/Tony Goldwyn legal thriller pilot. The project didn’t get a series pickup but was left in contention by the cable network. Manson’s credits also include New Amsterdam and Thief. Additionally, he created/exec produced the TNT series Saved.

Logan Lerman has come a long way from playing Mel Gibson's son in "The Patriot." The 20-year-old actor has appeared in blockbusters like "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," thrillers like "The Number 23" and even a Western: Lerman played Christian Bale's son in the 2007 remake of "3:10 To Yuma."
Despite that impressive resume, it's 2012 that has catapulted the California native onto the list of major talent to watch. In addition to filming Darren Aronfosky's "Noah" (where he plays the son of his "3:10 To Yuma" co-star Russell Crowe), Lerman leads the charming coming-of-age film "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Making a bad teen movie is easy to do. We've all seen the silly sex comedies, lame-brained slashers and overly earnest coming of age dramas.
Making a good teen movie isn't so easy. Which is one good reason to appreciate this weekend's limited release of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," written and directed by Stephen Chbosky and adapted from his popular 1999 book of the same name.
Starring up and coming actors Logan Lerman ("Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief") and Ezra Miller ("We Need to Talk About Kevin") alongside "Harry Potter" favorite Emma Watson in her first American role, the film follows smart, shy high school freshman Charlie (Lerman) through an eventful school year. He's mentored by an inspiring English teacher (Paul Rudd, in a smallish role) and grows close with two quirky seniors and step-siblings, Patrick (Miller) and Sam (Watson), finding acceptance in their offbeat group of friends.

If there’s one potent truth I could tell you about the teen film genre, it’s this: There’s a profound difference between a teenage movie and a movie about teenagers.
Teenage movies are a genre unto themselves. And, often, they are built upon flash cuts of willful stupidity. Shallow, inane and forgettable seconds after the movie ends, these films aren’t content with just being mindless, they dare to commit a more egregious sin; they treat their primary audience as if they are just as stupid, shallow and crass as the film itself.
A film about teenagers sees its subjects clearly and respects them. They may contain humor and warmth, but they refuse to shy away from poignancy and the painful truths of adolescence. Whether they are fun trifles (Clueless, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) or darker, more serious-minded affairs (Boy A, Chronicle) these films distinguish themselves with their uncommon depth,...

Instead, the ship heads to an uninhabited island after being fired upon, declaring themselves a sovereign nation with nuclear capability while looking for ways to clear their name. "Last Resort" is from Shawn Ryan (creator of "The Shield" and showrunner of "Terrier"), so it certainly has promise -- and Braugher's proven himself a major television star again and again on "Homicide: Life on the Street," "Thief" and "Men of a Certain Age." Manson most recently served as executive producer/co-showrunner of the FX drama pilot Outlaw Country. His credits also include New Amsterdam and Thief. As MTV was the publisher of the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower, it's fitting that the trailer for the book's movie adaption will premiere this Sunday during the pre-show of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. Still, those of us who have long been compelled by the bittersweet coming-of-age story of Charlie and his high school friends don't have to wait to get a taste of what author/writer-director Stephen Chbosky has in store thanks to this tantalizing teaser: The Perks of Being a Wallflower stars Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief's Logan Lerman as Charlie, a freshman who is struggling with the suicide of his closest friend while trying to make sense of the teen world of cliques, crushes and sexual confusion. Though shy, Charlie soon finds his way into a close-knit crew of new friends, played by Harry Potter star Emma Watson, Arrested Development's Mae Whitman,...

Netflix's streaming catalogue has been getting a little stale of late. Sure, they've got some amazing-sounding original content in the works (and you can already watch their first original series, Lilyhammer), but there's been something of a lull when it comes to new and exciting movie content being added. Released 20 years ago this week , "The Player" seemed at the time like one of the most merciless lampoons of Hollywood ever made, but director Robert Altman liked to insist that it was "a very mild satire." He meant that it could have been even meaner if he'd made it more realistic. Altman was working from Michael Tolkin's screenplay, adapted from Tolkin's own novel, but the observations it made about the movie industry's contempt for art and artists were clearly informed by Altman's own decades of frustration as a creative filmmaker with a singular, idiosyncratic vision who repeatedly clashed with executives interested only in profit. Judging by how many Hollywood A-listers he got to do free cameos in the movie -- about five dozen of them -- a lot of the industry's top talent must have felt as he did. So did critics and audiences, who helped make the movie...

With everyone from frat boys to soccer moms clearing their Sunday nights to watch “The Walking Dead," AMC is clearly enjoying their investment in creator/writer Robert Kirkman's zombie hit, and are now seeking to continue that success with an adaptation of another Kirkman comic property.
According to Deadline, AMC is starting development on “Thief of Thieves,” based off a recent comic series from Kirkman and Chic Eglee, who will act as showrunner for the adaptation. Written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Shawn Martinbrough, the comic and series follows Conrad Paulson, a master thief seeking a way out of his profession to be there for his ex-wife and estranged child. Once he manages to break free, however, he finds the thrill that the job provides essential, and so he returns to claim riches from other burglars flush with wealth.
In a recent statement, Kirkman explained his reasons for the show.

Work has begun on Doctor Who’s 7th season, and while there are tons of unsubstantiated rumors as to where this season is going, conversations between writers, directors and cast via Tweets and interviews can give fans in search of news (was there ever a time when we let shows unwind without knowing all the spoilers beforehand?) some hope. What is confirmed is that Mark Williams, who played Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter films, will guest star in what is probably the second episode of the season. Now what role he’s playing is up for debate, but the owner of the private house where filming is taking place has tweeted that her house contains photos of Rory and Amy, and both Arthur Darvil and Karen Gillan and Williams are filming together. Which could mean that Williams is probably playing Rory’s Dad, as the actors look similar.

Emma Watson is Hermione Granger to most of us, but she recently appeared in My Week with Marilyn, a film drumming up major Golden Globe and Oscar attention. She’s a fashion icon and a role model. When next we see her, it just might be in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
The story focuses primarily on Charlie, acted by Lerman. You may recognize the young actor from the adaptation called Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Charlie is a high school freshman trying to stay sane while coming of age.

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.
