10. John and Jane Smith from Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
We don’t typically consider married couples to be menacing, but there’s an exception to every rule — and John and Jane Smith are definitely one. From trying to kill each other at their house to dispatching countless assassins sent after them while working together, the Smiths are a force to be reckoned with — or, better, not even touched.
9. Chris Wolff from The Accountant (2016)
They often say that the most dangerous people are the ones who patiently try to avoid the fight, and Chris Wolff is the ultimate proof of that. He’s not excited about killing people, but when dookie hits the fan, he does what has to be done to succeed. The scariest part about Wolff is that he’s always over-prepared for any scenario.
8. Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction (1994)
Following up on “the most dangerous people are,” we have Jules Winnfield.

After much wait and anticipation, Netflix is gearing up to drop the hottest movie of the year, and one of their best acquisitions in a while — Richard Linklater's "Hit Man."
Not to be confused with either the "Hitman" game series or David Fincher's thrilling "The Killer," this was one of the biggest hits of the fall film festival circuit last year, premiering in Venice to great buzz and continuing to gather praise in Toronto, New York, and Sundance.
"Hit Man" is inspired by the true story of a nerdy part-time teacher who works undercover for the police as a contract killer in sting operations. It stars Adria Arjona and Glen Powell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Linklater. The film was praised for being a steamy hot dark comedy that showed Glen Powell was ready for superstardom.

A golden era of video game adaptation is happening right now. Last April, the Netflix streaming service unveiled a pair of first look images from the then-untitled shark thriller genre regular Xavier Gens has been working on for them. Starring Bérénice Bejo, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in the silent film The Artist, Léa Léviant of Mortel, and Nassim Lyes of Overdose, this shark thriller has the following synopsis: Set in the Summer of 2024, the film unfolds in Paris which is hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, learns from Mika, a young environmental activist, that a large shark is swimming deep in the river. To avoid a bloodbath at the heart of the city,...

There are sharks all up in the Seine in Netflix’s upcoming aquatic horror, Under Paris. Here’s the first trailer.
At some point, sharks will club together and get a PR manager; until then, we’ll keep getting films like Jaws, Sharknado, and upcoming efforts like Beast Of War, Something In The Water and Renny Harlin’s Deep Water.
To the ever-growing list we can now add Under Paris, coming to a small screen near you this summer courtesy of Netflix. If you haven’t gathered already: yes, the film really is about sharks swimming up the Seine to terrorise all the hundreds of people that (presumably) swim in Paris’ waters on any given day.
Yes, it’s all incredibly silly, but if the trailer’s anything to go by, everyone involved knows it’s all incredibly silly. Under Paris is directed by Xavier Gens, who broke through with the extremely gory 2007 indie horror,...

While Cruise’s iteration received mixed responses from the fans, Alan Ritchson’s depiction received better responses, especially for his look. Once upon a time there was a film industry that wasn't dominated by the comic book behemoths of D.C. and Marvel. Where a comic book style movie felt fresh, innovative and where the Hong Kong production line hadn't been stripped bare in the service of mainland blockbusters with a patriotic core. “Black Mask” in many respects is a last hurrah of an industry about to go through immense change. As Eureka Entertainment bring it to blu-ray, it's time to revisit this Frankenstein's monster of a collaborative effort between several unique talents.

Have you ever played a game so much that you feel like you could navigate it perfectly if you actually went there? Well, one GTA 5 player felt exactly the same way, and they aren’t just any GTA player, as they are also a world cup-winning football player called Hugo Lloris.
One amazing skill that gamers have developed over the years is the fact that they can easily remember maps in a game, to the point that even some players can navigate them blindfolded.
For some games, these maps are based on real-life locations and are so similar that if you played the game and then went to the location it is based in, you could navigate it just on your video game memory, just like Hugo Lloris believed upon his journey to LA to become a part of the LA Fc.

The hitman has proven a consistent source of inspiration for movies, from 1942’s “This Gun For Hire” to 1967’s “Le Samourai” to the recent “Hitman.” With so many movies centered around a hitman, it’s hard not to feel derivative. One of the ways that filmmakers make their take on the hitman feels fresh and unique is to give the contract killer a quirk, an easily distinguishable characteristic. Some examples include Alain Delon’s love of birds in “Le Samourai,” Michael Fassbender’s The Smith’s playlist in “The Killer,” or Tom Cruise’s use of taxis in his murder method in “Collateral.” “Knox Goes Away,” directed by and starring Michael Keaton (“Batman” “Birdman”), tells the story of John Knox, a hitman dealing with a degenerative brain disorder, Cretuszfeldt-Jakob Disease, similar to Alzheimer’s.

It’s always fun to be able to try out an upcoming game before its release, and that’s exactly what Steam Next Fest aims to do. Running through February 12, the celebration highlights thousands of demos, allowing you to get your hands on some of the most anticipated games while discovering new ones to add to your wishlist.
Going through the list can be a daunting task, so here’s six highlights that I’ve tried out and would highly recommend.

As quickly as it came, Sundance 2024 is in the books, with it another excellent showcase of the hottest titles in independent cinema. This marked my fifteenth year attending the festival in Park City, Utah, and I ended up reviewing twenty-one movies as part of my coverage. Here are a few takeaways from the festival:
Horror is king at Sundance
The midnight section at Sundance has always been extensive, but in the last few years, thanks to the box office success of breakout acquisitions like Hereditary, The Babadook, and last year’s Talk to Me, it’s become the premiere section for big deals. A24 showed up with one of the most buzzed-about titles of the festival, I Saw the TV Glow (which I disliked – but I was in the minority), while Netflix spent $17 million on It’s What’s Inside, which could be a big horror breakout for them.

No one quite knows what to expect of the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival, the first major fest following the end of the dual Hollywood strikes.
The strikes, which stopped production during the months when many Sundance features normally film, have had some impact on the lineup of U.S.-produced titles, with insiders noting that many titles needed some more time, post-strikes, to finish production than the Sundance submissions deadlines allowed. A slimmed U.S. Dramatic Competition section is now 10 films, down from 13.
As for sales, a top agent pegs this year’s market as landing “somewhere between last year’s Sundance and this year’s Toronto.” That is to say, there likely will be several big sellers like Chloe Domont’s Fair Play (Sundance) and Richard Linklater’s Hitman (Toronto), both of which landed at Netflix in big eight-figure deals, followed by a long tail of...

Plot: A model prisoner’s leave ends in tragedy when his past resurfaces, forcing him to flee. He starts over in Thailand, until a local criminal coerces him back into crime. After this man attacks his family, he vows revenge.
Review: Xavier Gens burst onto the horror scene with 2007’s Frontier(s) and I thought he’d be quite the name by this point. He followed that up with the often maligned Hitman and all but disappeared from US Cinemas. After finding success with Lupin, I’m hoping that Mayhem! serves as the beginning of a bit of a revival for Gens. Because despite its issues, there is a lot of potential here.
The story of Mayhem! follows Sam, a professional fighter whose whole life is turned upside down when he’s forced to flee the country. He ends up in Thailand and rebuilds his life but his past catches...

It’s almost an understatement to say that 2023 was the year for cinephiles.
The best films of the year marked a return to auteur season with new features from Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Michael Mann (“Ferrari”), Sofia Coppola (“Priscilla”), Ridley Scott (“Napoleon”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), David Fincher (“The Killer”), Richard Linklater (“Hitman”), Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Todd Haynes (“May December”), Ari Aster (“Beau Is Afraid”), and Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”).
Of course, Barbenheimer proved that theaters were back with billion-dollar box office numbers, but 2023 was also the year for high-brow streaming features to shake up the system. Netflix’s Leonard Bernstein ode “Maestro” saw Bradley Cooper get back into the director’s chair following Oscar-winning “A Star Is Born,” plus the streamer hosted first-time filmmakers Chloe Domont and Cord Jefferson’s respective films “Fair Play” and “American Fiction,” both produced by Rian Johnson.

Shifting sands: Red Sea International Film Festival, the big Saudi Arabian film get-together, opens its third edition next Thursday in the port city of Jeddah. The event was launched in the wake of Saudi Arabia lifting of its 35-year cinema ban at the end of 2017, as part of its 2030 Vision plan aimed at moving the economy away from a reliance on oil, and has become an integral part of the country’s ambition to become the leading film and TV hub in the Mena region. But announcements on films and guests have been down to the wire this year, as the event juggles the shifting sands of the global geo-political tensions set in motion by the Israel-Hamas...

1998, one year into the handover of Hong Kong to China and action cinema was beginning to shift. “The Storm Riders” was the first to really demonstrate CGI enhanced action. Jackie Chan was balancing Hollywood and Hong Kong and Jet Li was about to launch himself onto a wider audience as the villain in “Lethal Weapon 4”. With that in mind, he had one more vehicle for his local fanbase that year in “Hitman”. As Eureka Entertainment re-release it as part of their “Heroes and Villains” box set, it provides an opportunity to go back to revisit a work that has gotten a bit lost in the mix over the years.

In anticipation of his new film, The Killer, coming to Netflix on November 10, I tip-toed through the tulips of my favorite director’s filmography and came away thinking that if David Fincher ever decided to fully wade into the waters of the horror genre?
We’d all be in deep shit. In the best of ways.
Here are the most messed up and depraved moments of David Fincher’s career… so far.
Hugging Ed Kemper – “Mindhunter” Season 1, Episode 10 (2017)
David Fincher has an amazing way of taking a simple moment and making it more intense than drinking Mountain Dew while snowboarding over a volcano. He made a movie about Facebook and it’s one of my all-time favorites for Christ’s sake.
In this scene, we have a simple conversation between two men in a hospital room that still somehow leaves you looking for Ray Finkle and a new pair of shorts.

“Strike, strike, strike, strike,” said Millennium Media President Jeffrey Greenstein, when asked about the lack of big projects and deals at this year’s American Film Market. Santa Monica’s annual indie movie showcase, which wraps up Sunday, has been quieter than usual, with no blockbuster sales and only a handful of new projects generating real buzz.
A24’s Civil War, Alex Garland’s new sci-fi film starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny, was the rare nearly finished film (the project is in post) at AFM that everyone was talking about that appears to have triggered a bidding war. The near-future thriller —”an intellectual action film,” is how one buyer described it — is set in a United States on the brink of total collapse.

Getting an independent movie made these days is hard enough but for producers piling into the halls of Santa Monica’s Le Méridien Delfina Hotel for the American Film Market this week, the SAG-AFTRA strike has added another layer of complication.
SAG-AFTRA’s Interim Agreements, or IAs, the contract required for independent producers to produce or talent to promote movies during the ongoing actors strike, have made packaging and deal making tricky, with many filmmakers uncertain when, even if, projects they are offering at AFM will be able to shoot.
“We have our cast set for Worldbreaker but we just have to wait for the end of the strike before we can actual get those deals done,” said director Brad Anderson, at AFM to pitch international buyers on his new dystopian sci-fi thriller, which The Exchange is selling. “Like most filmmakers, I’ve been sitting around not able to...

Who doesn't love David Fincher? I did not love "Mank." But I still love David Fincher, and I know you do too. However you feel about that last feature, it's been a while since Fincher had a real consensus banger, and that's the kind of film he's known for. Viewers loved his Netflix series "Mindhunter", but hey, that's television, and Fincher only directed seven out of 19 episodes. Could "The Killer" slingshot Fincher back to the top of the American auteur pyramid, knocking the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, Gina Prince-Bythewood, or any of his other Gen X competitors off the top spot?
That remains to be seen. But we do have a new trailer for the film, a follow-up of the trailer Netflix released way back at the end of August. There have been more developments than the mere release of a second trailer since then, too. People have seen the movie.

There is a preconceived notion that comics writer Garth Ennis dislikes superhero culture with a passion, which is at times quite evident from all the brutally sarcastic jabs he delivered to the genre through some of his seminal works like Hitman. But his most scathing commentary took the form of a bitter deconstruction of the established superhero status quo, The Boys, which has been famously adapted into a TV series by Amazon Prime. Far removed from the idealistic world where superheroes exist to serve justice with honor, the superheroes in The Boys abuse power to their hearts’ fill—an aspect that has clicked with the audience so much that the series has spawned three seasons already, as has the spin-off series Gen V, which has been released recently.

Any developer will tell you that games rarely turn out the way they were first envisioned. Features get cut or don’t work as planned. New tech can mean a game can look or play much better by moving it to new hardware. Sometimes, huge chunks of a game just need to be cut to meet a deadline. These changes are a normal part of the process.
But what’s much less common is when development gets far enough along that a title can be shown publicly, but the final product ends up being much different from what was first shown. These are 15 games that radically changed during development.
15. Too Human
After a decade of development, Too Human launched as an Xbox 360 exclusive in 2008 to what could generously be called “mediocre reviews.” Critics liked the sci-fi take on Norse mythology but were underwhelmed by the lack of loot and somewhat...

Netflix has acquired Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s buzzy “Hit Man,” TheWrap has learned. With a reported payout of $20 million, this marks the second major buy for the streaming giant amid this year’s Venice and Toronto film festivals following their reported $11 million acquisition of Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour.”
“Hit Man” stars Powell, who co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater based on a Skip Hollandsworth-penned “Texas Monthly” article. The film concerns an alleged master assassin who is secretly working for the cops. Adria Arjona plays an apparently battered wife who inspires enough sympathy from the faux killer to make him consider doing the job for real.
Ben Croll wrote in his review for TheWrap that the picture “is a deliriously entertaining star vehicle, a throwback to the low-concept, high-reward studio crowd-pleasers built around a comic persona and designed to showcase a gifted performer’s range.”

Richard Linklater took inspiration from the musical numbers in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie.”
The “Hitman” writer-director revealed to NME that he saw the billion-dollar movie multiple times.
“I liked the musical numbers,” Linklater said. “I liked the movie a lot. It’s worth seeing a couple times.”
He added, “The best thing that happened to cinema in a while is ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie.’ Sends a good message. I’m glad those are doing well.”
Linklater is currently working on a musical himself, with the decades-spanning adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.” The film stars Paul Mescal as a Broadway composer who leaves his theater pals (Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein) to pursue becoming a Hollywood producer.
The musical, which itself is adapted from a Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, spans 20 years and is told in reverse chronological order. Linklater is thus filming the feature adaptation backwards,...

Some of the notable features include the world premiere of the Garth Davis film “Foe” with Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal (the premiere designation likely means this Amazon release won’t be part of the Telluride Film Festival lineup) and the U.S. premieres of the Richard Linklater movie “Hitman” with Glen Powell and the Hayao Miyazaki animated feature “The Boy and the Heron.”
Another headline-making event is the world premiere of “The Curse,” a new A24 television series that will debut on Showtime this fall. The series comes from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and stars both men alongside Emma Stone.

Former beauty queen Lindsay Shiver has been charged with conspiring to kill her husband, Robert Shiver, in the Bahamas.
Lindsay allegedly unsuccessfully conspired with two other Bahama natives that she hired to murder Robert on July 16 while she was on the Abaco Islands. The two other suspects have been identified as Terrance Adrian Bethel and Farron Newbold Jr. and were arrested.
Bethel was allegedly Lindsay’s boyfriend with whom she was having an affair throughout her marriage.
Police discovered this plot when they were looking into a separate investigation about a local burglary. They found texts on WhatsApp describing the plan when they were searching one of the burglary suspect’s phones.
The former couple both attended Auburn University where Robert played for the football team. Lindsay was a cheerleader and a former beauty queen who won the Miss Houston County. Robert currently works as an insurance executive at Senior Life Insurance Company.

It’s no secret that the last few years have been rough for Microsoft’s console business. The Xbox One never really recovered from early missteps, and it’s only recently that Xbox has seen a substantial increase in console exclusives. But the good news is that almost three years since its release, the Xbox Series X is shaping up to potentially be Microsoft’s best piece of gaming hardware yet.
The exclusives are slowly trickling in (with plenty more on the way), and the Xbox Series X/S offers the best selection of backward-compatible games of any console on the market. And then there’s Game Pass: the revolutionary monthly subscription service that offers unlimited access to hundreds of games each month (including every new first-party releases). So, now that the Series X has had a few years to build its library, we figured it was time to take...

Given the chaos wrought by the SAG-AFTRA strike, Toronto has just announced a surprisingly strong first-wave lineup.
In recent days, festival regulars have been apprehensive about the prospects of starry English-language movies making it to Venice, Toronto and Telluride, especially after the blow Venice was dealt last week when Zendaya starrer Challengers pulled out of its opening slot and moved to a spring 2024 release.
Despite the challenges, TIFF’s Cameron Bailey has managed to pull in an impressive lineup of potential awards contenders and acquisition titles. Among the lineup are Emily Blunt starrer Pain Hustlers, Sony’s Dumb Money, Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Anthony Hopkins starrer One Life, Kate Winslet drama Lee, and plenty others. This is in addition to some strong arthouse debuts such as Ladj Ly’s new movie and a handful of Cannes holdovers including Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone Of Interest...

In the game of showbiz, sometimes, even if the biz is breaking down, the show must go on. The Toronto International Film Festival is still scheduled to kick off even if the bevy of guests are not able to make appearances due to actors forbidden to promote their films during the SAG-AFTRA strike. TIFF will not be the only event weathering this challenge should the strike continue this festival season.
Regardless of the unrest in Hollywood, the Toronto International Film Festival has just released the list of movies set to screen this year. According to IndieWire, the lineup of films includes many that have yet to premiere in any capacity, making TIFF the first time it will be available to audiences. The inaugural night of the festival has yet to name an opening selection; however, they have already programmed in Taika Waititi’s new comedy, Next Goal Wins starring Michael Fassbender,...
