William Holden was an Oscar-winning performer who starred in dozens of movies, remaining active until his untimely death in 1981. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 17, 1918, Holden made his film debut with a starring role in the boxing drama “Golden Boy” (1939) when he was just 21 years old. Though his career lagged for the next decade, he came roaring back with Billy Wilder‘s Hollywood noir “Sunset Boulevard” (1950), playing a struggling screenwriter who becomes involved with a fading, delusional silent film star (Gloria Swanson). The role brought him his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor.
He joined the winner’s circle just three years later with a Best Actor victory for Wilder’s “Stalag 17” (1953), which cast him as a cynical American Pow who’s suspected of being a German informant during WWII.

There is no doubt that he is indeed one of the finest young actors in the entertainment industry currently.

Pop quiz: Which of these Apple TV+ shows is real? "Dear Edward," "Acapulco," "Liason," or "Swagger?" Trick question -- the answer is all of them. I'm not trying to dunk on those specific shows, just illustrating the point that since Apple TV+ is still not a super heavy hitter in the streaming game, a lot of great stuff can easily fall through the cracks. But if you like compelling television, you won't want the new series "Sugar" to fall through the cracks.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced and frequently directed by Fernando Meirelles, the series is a noir mystery starring Colin Farrell as John Sugar, a private investigator who is tasked with tracking down a missing girl in Los Angeles. You've seen that premise a thousand times in movies featuring guys like Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and Dana Andrews. But "Sugar" not only welcomes those comparisons, it actively...

Not that long ago, a dark thriller featuring Kevin Spacey as a smooth-talking stranger who arrives in a small town with an apparent vendetta against one of its inhabitants might have been a major movie event. His gift for intimate, Shakespearean malice could certainly boost a box-office haul.

April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.

After half a century calling the Chateau her Los Angeles home — she lives full-time at a ranch outside of Fort Worth, Texas — Buckley has a lot of stories.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 11 season premiere of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 6 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” kicked off its 11th season on Wednesday night — and in perhaps the show’s most unusual reveal ever, comedian Kevin Hart brought his prank war with host Nick Cannon to the show.
Hart brought his one-night-only appearance to “The Masked Singer” as Book, singing the song “So Sick,” by Ne-Yo (who happened to be the Season 10 winner on the show). The performance… was a bit pitchy, dawg. At the end of the song, the show’s panelists seemed to dig it. But after Robin Thicke quickly I.D.’ed Hart, the star took off his costume to reveal himself.

World-renowned director Steven Spielberg was at the height of his career when he made the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List," but he wasn't the only filmmaker who was interested in adapting the novel of the same name for the silver screen. The acclaimed director Billy Wilder, an auteur of classic Hollywood cinema who penned and directed such renowned films as "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard," was also vying for the rights to turn this story into a movie. However, by the time Thomas Keneally's evocative historical novel was published in 1993, Wilder's career was already winding down.
For a long time, Wilder enjoyed one of the most prosperous careers in Hollywood. His Oscar-nominated 1944 film "Double Indemnity" is considered the signal film of noir cinema and the model of the femme fatale trope. After Wilder's smashing success "Sunset Boulevard" earned three Oscars in 1951, he quickly went on to release several star vehicles...

Tom Holland will star as Romeo in a new version of Romeo & Juliet in the West End this spring.
The play will be directed by Jamie Lloyd, the director of the retooled Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, as well as the minimalist versions of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal, starring Tom Hiddleston, on Broadway. Tom Holland, the Spider-Man himself, will make a glamorous return to London’s West End by starring in Jamie Lloyd’s Romeo & Juliet.
British actor Tom Holland will switch webs for poison as he’s set to return to the West End in a new production of Romeo & Juliet.
Holland teased a “big announcement” on his Instagram stories the day before and many were hoping it would be related to Spider-Man 4, which is currently in early development at Sony and is expected to go into production in late 2024.
Holland got his big break by playing the title role in Billy Elliott at the Victoria Palace Theatre. His transition to films happened with Ja Bayona’s terrific The Impossible in which he played the son of Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts.

On Sept. 29, 2021, Netflix added another way for you to fall in love with your favorite shows and movies: a billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. This isn’t just a regular Netflix billboard teasing an upcoming premiere or highlighting stellar performances. No, this is a colossal marquee designed with the fan in mind.

Exclusive: It is only after Eric Roth invites you to sit on his front porch and discuss screenwriting and the thorny process of making great movies that you find yourself saying, wait, you wrote that one too? He’ll tell you you’re sitting in a chair where Nobel Laureates and Pulitzer winners held court — as if sitting with arguably the greatest and most successful living screenwriter isn’t intimidating enough — and there will be the occasional interruption as neighbors or passersby stop by this covered birdhouse looking repository at the edge of his lawn where Roth places books he’s read and admired, to help others revel in his lifelong love of words. They all want to talk about what they read and Roth is in no hurry to send them on their way.

Nicole Scherzinger is bringing her performance as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard to Broadway.
The former Pussycat Dolls singer has been starring in the musical on London’s West End for the past few months and she will wrap her run in the show this week.
It has been confirmed that Nicole will be bringing the musical to Broadway in 2024 and she will be joined by London co-stars Tom Francis, Grace Hodgett-Young, and David Thaxton.
The revival of Sunset Boulevard is directed by Jamie Lloyd.
Haunted by her memories and dreams, movie star Norma Desmond (Scherzinger) yearns to return to the big screen. A struggling screenwriter (Francis) who can’t sell his scripts to the Hollywood studios may be her only hope, until their dangerous and compelling relationship leads to disastrous circumstances. Drenched in champagne and cynicism, Sunset Boulevard scrutinizes the ambitions and frustrations of its characters and their intoxicating need for fame and adoration.

Todd Haynes, the visionary director of May December, doesn't seem to understand why people are putting his film in dialogue with tabloid-inspired TV movies. In an interview with Variety's Guy Lodge back in October, Haynes expressed some bemusement that his film was being received as having intentional camp elements or was in conversation with ripped-from-the-headlines movies. Haynes sees the film, premiered this weekend on Netflix, as referencing works like Ingmar Bergman's Persona and Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard. But while those comparisons are certainly apt, May December can't help but evoke those trashy TV movies that sought to cash in on real-life scandals.
