Do Not Approach This Man
richardchatten11 March 2018
Silent screen comics are inclined to be a strange looking lot, but most pale by comparison to this this fellow (who is no relation to the late Toto who became a beloved institution in his native Italy).

A former circus contortionist and pantomime clown and then a big hit in America, with his enormous zoot suit, big hat pulled down to his ears and vacant eyes, he looks as if he's just escaped from somewhere and the public would be well advised not to approach him. (In reality he disliked filmmaking as he found the whirr of the camera distracting and soon returned to the stage.)

A newsstand seen in one sequence carries headlines about Wilson (Woodrow, not Harold) and the deepening crisis in Russia.
