Best episode from the best time of a classic show.

The fabulously named Gateau in the Chateau stands proudly as the best episode from Allo Allo. To my mind the second series is the high point of the show, it was fresh, original, zany and funny. This episode was an out and out triumph in every department, the script was perfect, the acting was top notch, the energy and enthusiasm was evident, but it's the interplay between Sam Kelly and Gordon Kaye that makes it so good. Sure it was daft, but unlike the later series it was daft, but beautifully written and delivered with sincerity.

Pretty near perfect

Allo Allo was nicely established when this episode was made. The original cast were all still there. The viewers knew each characters catch phrase, so it was straight into top gear farce in this.

Adding all the rhyming verbal gymnastics so beloved by Ronnie Barker added a great amount of enjoyment and ensured it's place as one of the best loved. Note Sam Kelly was in Porridge with Ronnie B.

There was no better way to spend Boxing day 1985 than watching this, and it will be a damn sight funnier than anything new on British TV this Christmas.

And the second season ends with the bang. Sort off. 'The Gateau from the Chateau' was the high point of the second season (that itself was already better than the first one) and what a perfect way to end the season. The writers had turned the absurdity and slapstick level up a notch. And many jokes were much bolder and bushing the boundaries. My favorite moments were the interplay between Goren Kaye and Sam Kelly (pill from the till), and Herr Flick's reaction when he 'ate the fish'.

The second season also introduced to us some wonderful new characters that later become series regular. My favorite is that stupid Englishman who thinks he can speak French. Hilarious performance by Arthur Bostrom. We also got to know Engelbert von Smallhausen, another hilarious sidekick. General von Klinekrhoffen and Monsieur Alfonse made their comebacks.
