Little Joe is shot and spellbound
bkoganbing30 March 2016
On his way back to the Ponderosa after a trip selling horses to the army, Michael Landon is shot from ambush and only the grace of God keeps this from being a killing. He's found on the trail by ranch owner Richard O'Brien and brought to his place.

There are two elements in the episode. The first is a medical crisis with Little Joe's life hanging in the balance. Ben and Hoss have arrived on the scene and Lorne Greene and Dr. David Huddleston discuss the best way to deal with Joe's condition.

The second is a gambit taken from the Alfred Hitchcock classic Spellbound. While unconscious but having nightmares and raving about a lot of nonsense. But the way that Michael Chekov and Ingrid Bergman got to the source of what was mentally ailing Gregory Peck, the various Salvatore Dali like images are used to recreate Little Joe's nightmare visions. One of them has brother Hoss being one of the shooters. Now you can safely assume that Dan Blocker did not shoot his brother. But there is a metaphysical reason that Landon is dreaming this.

Some Bonanza writer must have seen Spellbound and thought right that it could be adapted to Bonanza.

We don't want an art film from you Bonanza

I haven't seen every episode, but the half I've seen, this one is the dumbest. The tedious delirious dream sequences are seriously cringe worthy. I agree with the first reviewer that the director was definitely going for a Hitchcockian vibe here, but it felt really out of place in Bonanza. At least I know the next one will be better... it has to be!
