Guest starring Patrick Adiarte
safenoe9 July 2021
Patrick Adiarte guest stars in this three-part Hawaii special of The Brady Bunch. Definitely worth watching for early 70s Hawaii and seeing the cast soak up the sun, and the characters falling afoul of a tiki that is causing havoc amongst the family. I miss The Brady Bunch and I enjoyed watching The Brady Brides.

A Great Part 2 Episode

Greg is rescued but more strange things happen with Bobby's tabu idol.

There is some good suspense scenes in this one, Jan finds the idol and puts it in her purse. She doesn't notice the big hairy spider that crawls in also. David tells the boys that the idol is bad luck tabu. Later that night Peter wears it and the spider crawls on him in a tense scene. He has a funny scared reaction. Mike comes in and removes the spider putting it in a paper bag. Another funny moment has Carol thinking Mike has a gift for her in the bag. The boys then visit the construction worker Mr Hanalei who tells them to break the evil spell, they must return the idol to an old burial ground. The boys end up in a cave, shadowed by a sinister figure, setting up Part 3.

The Hawaii Bunch
sambase-3877324 January 2022
Okay, here we go with part-two of the fabulous Hawaii episodes of the Brady Bunch, three episodes in all. As we saw in the first episode Bobby stole an ancient Hawaiian idol from a construction site, an idol that is believed by some on the islands to be "taboo" and bring bad luck to all who touch it. Well, guess who starts having bad luck? That's right! Bobby and any other Brady family members or housekeepers (Alice!) who are foolish enough to wear it. So we have that going on. And that's a lot of fun.

As the episode starts Greg is rescued from his surfing accident. You didn't think they were going to kill off Greg Brady did you?! No way. He still has to become Johnny Bravo later in the series! Go Johnny Go!

A tarantula spider makes an appearance in the hotel the Brady family is staying at. I've tried to find information as to whether or not tarantulas are natural to Hawaii and I can't find any reliable information. Darn. I've always wanted to know that...

That's about all you need to know I guess, I don't want to spoil any major developments. This episode is just as fun as part-one and so I gave it my highest rating: 10.

DITCH THE TABU, MATE! ASAP!

Classic second episode of the three part HAWAIIAN TRIP series, which kicked off Season 4. It is most definitely a trip, and as I have written earlier, perhaps the best episodes of the entire series. Wouldn't it have been cool had the Brady's relocated to Hawaii?

I am sure it was bantered about, but not in the budget.

This is just a lot of fun, written by Tam Spiva, who wrote nine episodes for the series, however also worked as script editor and oversaw 5l episodes, a Brady Bunch authority if there ever was one.

The gang's sunny vacation obviously takes a turn for the worse as Peter and Bobby bring home an ancient Hawaiian idol from a construction site where Mike is working on a new building. It spells doom and gloom to anyone who wears it. In one segment, Greg nearly drowns while surfing!

Best of the best is the classic scene where Peter goes to bed and has a giant, black tarantula(!) crawling up his body! I always thought this was the coolest scenes of 'em all, and one that got a lot of promotion back in the day. There are even publicity pictures still in circulation. I am sure, to this day, the first question anyone would ask Chris Knight if they happened to meet him is --how did you do that scene, man? No question the tarantula was "safe", but it was one ugly thang! In another campy scene, Mike puts the "stunned" bug in a paper bag, and Carol thinks it's a present for her???

One question all of us kids back in the day asked... How did the tarantula get into Carol's bag in the first place? Where did they go where there were tarantulas roaming about?

Things really change, and it gets creepy when Greg, Peter and Bobby venture out on their own and track to a remote cave. They bump into Professor Whitehead, played to the absolute hilt by Vincent Price. Applause to producer Sherwood Schwartz for casting Price here as it's a total surprise and a hoot. Price plays a scowling, reclusive archaeologist who got shafted by his last partner on a big find. This time he thinks he's onto something even bigger and NO ONE is gonna' cheat him.

That spells trouble for Greg, Pete and Bobby.

Veteran Hawaiian actor Lippy Espinla plays old Mr. Hanalei who runs into the guys. Lippy was an island native and frequently in episodes of HAWAII FIVE O.

I vote for Peter, who wears the best threads.

Mike gets the "father clothing" look, though he wears one cool plaid blue and white shirt.

Alice and the girls totally disappear here.

Do NOT miss this, especially for the scenery. SEASON 4, EPISODE 3 remastered dvd box set.
