Probably the worst Sunnydale Halloween episode
katierose2952 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the worst BTVS Halloween episode, but it does have a few good moments. "All the Way" doesn't really contribute anything to the large story arc. The Scoobies have some nice scenes, though. Willow's casual use of magic is an indication of things to come. Also, Xander and Anya announce their engagement, which is sweet. And it's always fun to see Giles, Spike and Buffy battle vampires. But, really, if you're in a hurry to get through season, you could skip "All the Way" and not miss anything.

Basically "All the Way" revolves around Dawn sneaking out on Halloween night. She and her friend hook up with two guys and wander around on a double date. Unfortunately the boys are really vampires. Meanwhile, Anya and Xander announce their engagement and the Scoobie throw them a party. When Willow uses magic to decorate though, Tara worries that her girlfriend is becoming dependent on spells. Giles then learns that Dawn is missing and goes looking for her. Tara and Wilow help, and end up fighting about Willow's spells. Spike and Buffy join the Dawn hunt. As it turns out, Dawn is making out with her date. When she learns that he's a vampire, she's sort of sad and scared at the same time. She liked this kid and he's... Well... Evil. When Buffy tracks her sister down, she gives Dawn a lecture about the perils of dating the undead. She also has to deal with a large scale vampire attack. Dawn finally has to stake her new boyfriend. Once they're home again, Buffy foists Dawn off on Giles, not wanting to lecture her sister herself. Giles starts to think that Buffy is using him as a crutch to avoid her responsibilities. And Willow casts a spell on Tara so she'll forget their fight.

There are some good parts to this episode. Halloween in Sunnydale is usually pretty fun. Especially since BTVS always sticks to the idea that old-school evil-doers hate the holiday. Spike looks down on it's human taint, and insists that real Black Hats skip it. (He'll make the same arguments over on "Angel" season five's "Life of the Party.") Spike has a whole thing about the "rules" of good and evil, and he lectures one of the vamps about how his attack on Dawn was breaking them. But Spike went after Buffy, Angel and the Scoobies on Halloween back in season two's "Halloween." I'm not sure whether he just automatically excuses his own Halloween rule breaking as necessary for Dru's recovery. Or he considers himself different than other evil doers, a "rebel" who's earned the right to be different. Or if he regrets his actions in "Halloween" now, and killing that other vamp was almost a statement to his old pre-chip/pre-in-love-with-Buffy self. Or if he's just forgotten how he nearly killed them back in season two. Whatever the reason, I like the conflicted nature of it. And it's nice that the Scoobies finally found about Anya and Xander's engagement. Anya's money dance around the store really was cute. It's about time that Xander made the announcement.

I also think that this is episode that really underscores the problem with Willow's magic use. The Scoobies can seem hypocritical this season as they lecture her about being addicted to magic. She's saved them so many times in the past with her spells and it's like they've just forgotten all the good that it's done for them. But, really it's not the magic itself... It's Willow's depending on it for everything, all the time. She's using it as a short cut to life. There are a lot of characters this season who look for easy answers to hard problems. The Trio use comic books to short-cut their way to evil plans. Buffy uses an affair with Spike to short cut her way to feeling again. Spike is using his affair with Buffy to short cut his way to her love. Xander getting engaged to Anya as a short cut to adulthood. They're looking for quick and simple solutions, and it's going to backfire on all of them.

On the down side, I kinna liked the creepy old guy in this episode. It's a shame he died before we got to find out why he got fired from that toy making job.

My favorite part of the episode: Spike spending his Halloween night watching "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." In fact, you could make a heck of a comparison between Linus and Spike. Linus is sitting in that pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin to rise and give him gifts because his pumpkin patch is the most "sincere." Spike is hanging around Sunnydale waiting for Buffy (who has risen from her grave) to love him because he's proved his feelings are sincere. Both of them have a vague feeling that it might be hopeless. They're both ridiculed by everyone for their stubborn persistence. But, neither one of them will give up or stop trying. Then you have Linus and his blue blanket, using it as both his identity and disguise in "The Great Pumpkin." While Spike uses his coat for the same reasons throughout BTVS. At the end of the cartoon, Linus thinks that he sees the Great Pumpkin, but it's just Snoopy. Angry and disappointed, he never-the-less vows to find another, better pumpkin patch next year. For Spike, this season will let him get closer to Buffy than he ever imagined, but he slowly comes to see the relationship is false. He sets out to win her love a new way and come back a better man next year. Plus, you're sort of hoping that both Linus and Spike win in the end. Or am I just reaching, now?

The old guy
sonjamranta29 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
My heart breaks for the old guy. The 'something special' was actually homemade Halloween dessert and he was just so glad not to be alone like probably all other days. Probably never had children of his own. A nice way to subvert expectations though, with the old guy in the beginning vs. The young guys in the end.

The One Where Dawn Almost Goes All The Way...
taylorkingston28 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode. It's not my favorite Halloween episode in the series, but it's a pretty good one. It is one of the only three episodes based on Halloween in the entire series. I don't know why they didn't do a Halloween episode every season. I guess it was either too much or it didn't fit into the current storyline.

In this episode, it's Halloween in Sunnydale and The Magic Box is having a big sale. Anya and Xander tell everyone, finally, that they're getting married. And everyone is really happy. We find out that Giles isn't always cleaning his glasses, he just doesn't want to see what's happening. We find this out when Anya and Xander are kissing. Willow and Buffy through an inpromt-due engagement party. I hope that's how you say it. Inpromt-due, maybe. It wasn't pre-organized, it was in the heat of the moment. There, that's a better way of saying. When Dawn is meant to be staying at a friends house, they sneak out with some older boys. These boys turn out to be vampires. Buffy finds out she's gone and she and Spike go to look for her. When the vampires try to get "toothy" Buffy and Spike show up to save the say. Spike says the funniest thing, "It's Halloween, we take the night off, those are the rules", then the vampire replies, "We don't follow rules. Me and mine are rebels." Spike responds to that with, "No, I'm a rebel, you're an idiot", and then he stakes him. Awesome.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10.

The finale Halloween
Realrockerhalloween5 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Halloween is a great episode focusing on Dawn going on her first date. I find it interesting that she shares many similarities with her sister and goes for bad boys. It turns out her date is even a vampire who feels something for her enough that he'll change her to be like him. It even reminds me of her first kiss with Angel when he goes camped face and scathing her. Its even creepy as you have an old man who has plans for the kids, but you never find out what they are as Justin sneaks up behind him like a serial killer and stains him. The way the vamps chase the girls through the woods in full demon mode all feel like a horror film.

I Love the festive decorations and costumes feeling just like the holiday. Throwing a party at the magic shop with kids trick or treating made it a delight.

The last and least of the Halloween episode
ossie8522 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Halloween is upon us and Dawn continues her rebellious behaviour by going out with her friend Janice and two boys Justin and Zack, but they may have made a mistake when they go into a creepy old man's house. Xander and Anya announce their engagement.

Why It's So Good - The third Halloween episode (see Halloween and Fear, Itself) keeps with the shows various themes for the year (Buffy & Spike, Xander & Anya, Willow & Tara, Dawn's stealing, Giles' concerns). DeKnight is consolidating himself as a major writer showing clever twists, and drawing a nice comparison between Dawn and Justin's relationship and Buffy and Angel's relationship.

Watch Out For - Buffy & Dawn's argument over parking with a boy.

Quote - "He kept poking me with his hook. I sent him over to charmed objects. With any luck, he'll poke the wrong one and end up in an alternative dimension inhabited by a 50-foot Giles that squishes annoying, teeny pirates." - Giles (in reference to Xander)

Summer's girls and guys in jackets
Joxerlives19 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Our little Dawnie is growing up. But maybe not as fast as she'd like to think.

The Bad; Would Dawn really consider giving herself to a boy she'd known 5 minutes? Probably not, maybe she was going to give him the pencil all along?

Best line; Buffy; "You were parking with a vamp?"

Kinky dinky; Anya dresses up as one of Charlie's Angels (Farrah hair) and mentions that she and Xander play sex games. When Buffy suggests that Spike wear a collar he suggests a leather one. Anya wants obscenely muscular male strippers for her hen night, a shame we never get to see her's or Xander's (although I've read at least one very funny fanfic in that regard called The Last Night). When Xander remarks "I'm going to marry that girl" Buffy thinks he's referring to her 15 year old sister. Dawn's first kiss. She has a thing for guys in jackets which we'll see again in 'Him'. She demonstrates the same poor taste in men as Buffy and Joyce, it obviously runs in the family. Anya and Dawn dance the dance of 'capitalist superiority' together and Willow joins Xander and Anya later. Buffy suggests that Xander used to pay girls to date him and he replies 'Define date?', maybe Riley, Giles and Angel weren't the only ones to frequent 'Tavern Wenches'? Dawn the voyeur once again, interrupting a courting couple who call her a "Perv". Dawn seems to like guys with cars, wonder what she thought of Xander's in The Zeppo. Dawn denies she's a 'kiss slut'.

Captain Subtext; The 'Willow-uses-too-much-magic' subtext now becomes a text. Tara says she is 'not really one for the timber'suggesting she's (technically at least) a virgin. When Xander announces his engagement look at Willow's expression, just a little hint of longing. Willow refers to herself as a 'hot mama-yama'.

Apocalypses; 6

Scoobies in bondage: Buffy: 8 Giles: 4 Cordy: 5 Will: 3 Jenny: 1 Angel: 4 Oz: 1 Faith: 3 Joyce: 1 Wes: 1 Xander; 1 Dawn; 3

Kills: Dawn stakes her first vamp, yay! Good night for Giles who kills 3, 2 for Buffy (love the car door decapitation) and 2 for Spike presuming he kills the second one that attacks him? Buffy: 98 vamps, 40 demons, 6 monsters, 3 humans, 1 werewolf, 1 spirit warrior & a robot Giles: 8 vamps, 2 demon, 1 human, 1 god.

Cordy: 3 vamps, a demon Will: 6 vamps + 1 demon +1 fawn.

Angel: 3 vamps, 1 demon, 1 human Oz: 3 vamps, 1 zombie Faith: 16 vamps, 5 demons, 3 humans Xander: 5 vamps, 2 zombies, 1 a demon, Anya: 1 vamp and 1 a demon Riley; 18 vamps + 7 demons Spike; 5 vamps and 2 demon Buffybot; 2 vamps Tara; 1 demon Dawn; 1 vamp

Scoobies go evil: Giles: 1 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 1 Angel: 1 Oz: 1 Joyce: 1 Xander: 4 Anya; 1 Dawn; 1 Alternate scoobies: Buffy: 6 Giles: 3 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 2 Joyce: 2 Xander: 3

Recurring characters killed: 10 Jesse, Flutie, Jenny, Kendra, Larry, Snyder, Professor Walsh, Forrest, McNamara, Joyce Sunnydale deaths; the creepy old man, the car driver alive as far as we know.

90; Total number of scoobies: 7 Xander, Willow, Buffy, Anya, Tara, Spike, Giles Xander demon magnet: 5(6?) Preying Mantis Lady, Inca Mummy Girl, Drusilla, VampWillow, Anya (arguably Buffy & Faith with their demon essences?), Dracula?

Scoobies shot: Giles: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 4 Riley; 1 Notches on Scooby bedpost: Giles: 2; Joyce & Olivia, possibly Jenny and 3xDraccy babes? Cordy: 1? Buffy: 3 confirmed; Angel, Parker,Riley, 1 possible, Dracula(?) Angel: 1;Buffy Joyce: 1;Giles, 2 possible, Ted and Dracula(?) Oz: 3; Groupie, Willow & Verucca Faith:2 ;Xander, Riley Xander: 2; Faith, Anya Willow: 2;Oz and Tara Riley; 3; Buffy, Sandy and unnamed vampwhore

Spike; good or bad? Charging to the rescue of Dawn but then he's always liked her

Dawn in peril; 5 courting with a vamp

Dawn the bashful virgin; 2 Tara saves Dawn from Anya's sex talk.

Buffy/Dawn more than sisters; again, Buffy seems to just sense that Dawn is in trouble and where to find her.

Questions and observations; A fun ep, we see that Dawnie won't be an adorable moppet forever, Joyce's little girl is starting to grow up. One of the best things about the later seasons of Buffy is getting to watch Dawn blossom, shame we never get to see her go to her prom, graduate etc And as usual with the Summer's girls her taste in men is a disaster. Buffy still leaves it to Giles to spank Dawn but he knows that eventually it's something she must do herself. Note contrary to what Dawn says later Buffy doesn't want Dawn to go out on Halloween, she wants to spend time with her and almost seems jealous of Janice.

Marks out of 10; 8/10 because I'm a sucker for Dawn stories

Dawn's Rebellion
Samuel-Shovel21 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"All the Way" is a Halloween episode! The shop has a big sale which is followed by a big announcement: Anya & Xander go public with their engagement. The gang has a makeshift party. Dawn claims to be staying the night at a friend's house but the two sneak off to canoodle with a pair of boys. The boys turn out to be vampires who plan on turning the two high school girls. Buffy, Spike, & Giles must track down Dawn before it's too late. Meanwhile, Willow & Tara argue about Willow's excessive use of magic. An upset Tara gets her memory wiped by Willow to make it all better. The patrol shows up just in the nick of time to save Dawn as they slay a whole gang of young vamps.

This episode is tonally all over the place. It's silly when it should be serious, it's serious when it should be silly. It just can't make up its mind. When the final showdown commences, everyone's cracking jokes as if Dawn's life isn't hanging in the balance. I know this kind of thing happens a lot but Buffy usually handles these situations with more gravity when her loved ones are involved. Perhaps this is the new Buffy, post-second death.

Despite the episode's mediocrity, there were a few important through lines that I'm assuming will continue to develop throughout the season.

First, Dawn's continued rebellion. She's a teenager with a recently deceased mom, a weird relationship with her sister, and the knowledge that she was created to be a key to locked portals. That will do a number on your headspace! I expect her to continue to be a rebel.

Second is Willow's continued misuse of magic. As her power has increased, so has her confidence and her boldness. Even in situations not requiring it, Willow uses magic if she feels like it. It's almost a borderline addiction for her. Up to this point, it's been alarming but not terrible. But this episode seems like a turning point as she purposely wipes Tara's memory. Look out!

Third (and the least exciting in my opinion) is the engagement of Xander and Anya. I realize that these characters need things to do and they need some kind of arc as they mature, but a subplot about a couple trying to figure out marriage and how relationships work is not something I'm looking forward to drudge through. Xander's pre-marital anxiety feels like it belongs on a different show, not on one about a vampire slayer.

This is definitely a weaker episode but clearly important in the grand scheme of things.
