Giles' past comes back to haunt him...Literally
katierose29518 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Giles wasn't always a mild-mannered, tweed-clad librarian. Before he was a watcher, it seems that our Mr. Giles was something of a demon-raising rebel, who had a tattoo, belonged to a band and occasionally practiced the black arts. This is the episode where we first begin to explore Giles' dark side and the Scoobies are in for a surprise as they discover that he's a lot more than he seems. "The Dark Age" is important because it gives us a greater understanding of Gile's background and character. Throughout the series, he works hard to project a dignified image of maturity and stability. But, every now and then flashes of his former rough-edges come out (For instance, in season three's "Band Candy" and season five's "The Gift.") He might get knocked over the head a lot, but basically, Giles is tougher than he looks.

This episode is all about Giles trying to hide his past. Young Giles got into all sorts of trouble and, unfortunately, some of it comes back to haunt him. Ethan Rayne is still hanging around Sunnydale and pretty soon more of Giles old friend start popping up...Dead. Apparently, when they were younger, Giles, Ethan and their buddies, raised a demon that possesses people while they sleep. It also can infect the dead turning them into zombies. The demon has come to town looking to kill Ethan and Giles and anyone else that gets in its way. Giles is desperate to keep this a secret from his new friends. But, when Jenny Calander becomes possessed and Buffy is captured by Ethan, it's up to Giles, Angel and the Scoobies have to save them.

There are some good parts to this episode, Cordelia and Xander's annoyance over attending school on a Saturday is pretty funny. And I like the scenes of Giles complaining about Buffy's taste in music. "It's just meaningless sounds." Also, Ethan is a great character. He's just evil enough to be a bad guy, but just likable enough to make his cowardly, sneaky behavior funny. When the demon attacks and he hides behind Buffy you just have to laugh. And it's good to see an episode that focuses on Giles. His character will have a lot to do this season and "The Dark Age" gives us a better understanding of his motivations and background.

On the down side, why does Buffy want to stop the vampires from stealing the blood delivery? I understand that the blood's needed for sick people, but if the vampires are drinking pre-packaged meals, so to speak, doesn't that mean that they aren't off killing innocent victims? It seems to me that there are a lot worse things happening in Sunnydale that she could be trying to stop.

My favorite part of the episode: The "Anywhere But Here" game. I've played that myself from time to time, but I never had a name for it before. Thanks, BTVS!

In insight into Giles's past
Tweekums15 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens an old friend of Giles, who he hasn't seen for twenty years, turns up in Sunnydale. However he is killed before he finds Giles; immediately afterwards his demonic attacker collapses into a puddle of blue goo! Later the police ask Giles to identify his friend's body in the morgue. Not surprisingly it isn't long before the body is up and walking again. Giles is clearly affected; both he and his friend have the same strange symbol tattoo and he is so shaken that he misses an appointment with Buffy. He says nothing is wrong but clearly something is. It turns out that in his youth he had dropped out of Oxford and, with friends, dabbled in the occult. This involved summoning the demon Eyghon; now only two of those involved are still alive; Giles and Ethan Rayne, who appeared two episodes back in 'Halloween'. While Giles wants to save those around him Ethan just wants to save his own skin. Things go from bad to worse when Eyghon possesses Miss Calendar; the gang will have to find a way to defeat it without harming her.

This was a solid episode for several reasons; most notably the fact that we learn more about Giles's darker past and the return of Ethan Rayne. The demon Eyghon wasn't particularly interesting in itself but the effect it had on others was. Anthony Head has always been solid as Giles but here he got to show a greater depth to the character as he must disclose details about his past he'd clearly rather not have had to reveal as well as his reaction to the change in his relationship with Jenny at the end of the episode. His wasn't the only character to develop during the episode; it was fun seeing Willow take charge of Xander and Cordelia and Cordelia becoming more part of the group. There is plenty of tension, especially in the final scenes. Overall another really good episode; so far I'm really enjoying this season.

The One Where Giles Conjured Evil...
taylorkingston9 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy this episode. I like that it shows us an up-close-and-personal experience with Giles. We see what he was like and how he became the man he is today.

In this episode, people have come to try and kill Giles, but they're dead. It turns out that Giles and his friends conjured an evil spirit when they were younger, and now that spirit is getting its revenge. Ethan Rayne is also involved, as he was one of the people who conjured the demon. So, to save his life, Ethan kidnaps Buffy, marks her with the demon's symbol, burns his symbol off, and tries to get the demon to kill her instead. Good luck with that.

Overall, I give this episode a 9 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Amazing.

The dead
Realrockerhalloween30 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Dark ages follow Giles as he's haunted by his past demons and an old friend return. Not my favorite episode, but I like the concept of Ripper a rebellious teenager who summoned a demon in his youth now possessing the bodies of the dead and nothing can kill it until all members are dead. I enjoy seeing Jenny becoming evil since it makes it personal and the heroes have to find a way to save her and her monster look was kinda sexy yet scary.

Still I wonder why Angel was able to absorb it and the two demons inside fight. Are demons stronger then vampires or are was his really itching for some action. Since Angel has a demon possessing his body what factors distinguish between the two as it seems they may share a common link of body swapping.

Uh... Ooh-ooh! Bury a potato...

Warning: Spoilers
The Dark Age is about Giles's past coming back to haunt him, in the form of a demon he once summoned.

A good episode with a lot to like, but learning of Giles's dark side's fine, but the Eyghon demon's clumsily handled and it isn't the most clever episode. I understand having Sarah do calisthenics and I'm all for it, but this Philip guy just stands there while Eyghon slowly walks towards him. I can't stand people not trying. Then when Eyghon's in the library, can no one see the liquid and why isn't Giles aware, he should know everything about this demon. Then it's out of character for Willow to risk Angel's life like that and does she even know how to contact him? Oh and the demon inside Angel just wins a so called battle, okay. This Ethan just comes and goes as he pleases creating havoc, but because he's human no one will harm him, silly. Cordy's settling in nicely and supplying the laughs and I like the aftermath from this.

A slight dip in season 2
kellyq121 June 2022
Season 2 is very good overall, and I like this episode, esp. Because it gives us another side into Giles (Ripper?!). But the zombie-esque monsters are just alright overall. The ending resolution is creative!

Giles' Story
Hitchcoc19 May 2024
Giles is a focus in this episode. We find out that he had a dark past. Before he became a Watcher, he dabbled in the dark arts. His friend Ethan and he were a force in a dark cult. They each seemed to have mystical powers where the dead emerged as kinds of zombies. But now Spike was back and in the middle of things. This certainly makes the rather bland Rupert more formidable. There is a list that is being checked off and it is down to two, still alive. One is Giles and the other is Ethan and the third a guy who has been dispatched along the way. There is a lack of clarity in this episode that makes it less than perfect. Of course, Buffy is forced to get in the middle of things, having to face Spike.

The return of Ripper
Joxerlives16 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Dark Age;

The Good; Buffy's training although as Will later comments isn't she just naturally buff? Willow coming through with a great idea, Cordy tripping Ethan

The Bad; The melting effect is a little lame. The demon seems quite insignificant compared to the threats we later see.

Best line; Buffy; "Have I ever let you down?" Giles; "Do you want me to answer that or just glare?" but also Xander; "An extra day in school plus Cordelia? Mix in a little rectal surgery and it's my best day ever"

Questions and observations; Who's Gavin Rossdale? According to the comics Buffy's fantasy hasn't changed that much it's just Daniel Craig now. Willow by contrast likes Tina Fey now (Seth Green and Eric Balfour will work with John Cusack in 'America's Sweethearts' and Michelle Tractenberg will work with his sister Joan in 'Ice Princess'). Very much Giles' episode and adding a lot more depth to his character. Great stuff between him and Ethan, you wonder if ASH and Robin Sachs have worked together before, they really do come across as old friends. Why does Eoghan wait all these years? Drunk Giles for the first time and Xander mentions his infamous uncle Rory who we'll later meet in Hell's Bells. The Bay City Rollers were late 70s and a little cheesy for a teen rebel like Giles. Jenny knocked unconscious and goes evil, Buffy knocked unconscious and tied up. Jenny mentions "I've got you under my skin" which is later a title for an Angel ep. Here Xander disparages computers but Nic Brendon will go on to play a computer expert in his recurring role on 'Criminal Minds' 6/10, good ep but not brilliant

Shaded Side of Giles
Aegelis3 April 2024
Seems everyone has their secrets, even the librarian who used to be called "Ripper". Battling the forces of darkness again, we find out more about Giles' past as well as Angels. Willow steps up to a leadership role and suspense mounts as Jenny Calendar's life hangs in the balance.

Can Buffy and the crew piece everything together before time runs out? Full of action, baddies, and an interesting twist to finish, the episode surely keeps viewers' attention. A few scenes seem a little disjointed for me though, not seeming to follow a logical sequence, but overall was tied up neatly for the finish. A credit to the series with great writing, directing and acting.

Giles has a dark past
ossie859 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A friend of Giles, Philip Henry, comes to Sunnydale looking for Giles but is killed before he gets to him. He came to warn Giles that a demon they summoned, Eyghon, was coming to kill him. This demon possesses everything that's dead or unconscious and possesses Jenny.

Why It's So Good - An underrated episode in between some amazing ones. Tells us some history of Giles' past, and how his past decisions continue to impact the lives of those he loves. Buffy learns that Giles, again, isn't perfect. Hats off too Robia LaMorte also.

Watch Out For - Ethan Rayne's antics, he is a delightful villain that is underused.

Quote - "Ooo, gang, did ya hear that? A bonus day of class plus Cordelia! Mix in a little rectal surgery, and it's my best day ever!" - Xander after finding out he has to go to school and Saturday.
