Goodbye Jenny Wren

A critic wrote at the time. C. A. T. S. Eyes appealed to different male demographic. Leslie Ash (Fred Smith) for those who liked a bit of rough. Rosalyn Landor (Pru Standfast) who liked a bit of pose. God knows who Jill Gascoine (Maggie Forbes) is aimed at!

That is rather cruel as Gascoine was obviously aimed for the man who liked the more mature woman. She makes her first appearance dressed in a suit on her way to the midnight showing of The Blues Brothers. Later she is wearing a maid outfit.

This was a bizarre spin off from The Gentle Touch. Maggie Forbes has left the police and joined a ladies private detective agency. Only it is a front for a Home Office organisation called C. A. T. S. (Covert Activities Thames Section) overseen by Nigel Beaumont (Don Warrington.) Maybe it aimed to be an all female The Professionals meets Charlie's Angels.

The first episode sees Maggie replacing Jenny who was killed while investigating a Russian trawler, a front for the KGB who have stolen an important device from the British.

Fred wants revenge. She hangs out in a pub where Russian agents also hover. Fred pretends to be a disgruntled naval officer who is unhappy that her scientific research is being curtailed.

Meanwhile Maggie Forbes finds out it's not all espionage. You are expected to do private eye activities. Maggie is consulted by a woman who thinks her husband might be cheating with his secretary.

Set in the mid 1980s with a female Prime Minister running the country. Here all male executives are doing hanky panky with their secretaries at the same hotel.

The first feature length episode is not good. The critics panned the show and it is easy to see why. Not great writing, the action scenes were uneven. Really could not make much sense of Fred's getaway from the Russian trawler.
