An old enemy

Stuart Whitman captures killer Harry Dean Stanton who was left then in Percy Herbert's charge. Then Stanton escapes and Herbert tracks him to Texas where he kills him and then finds out hes a deputy of Sheriff Clifton James.

James and Whitman have some nasty history and James is most corrupt. Herbert gets a kangaroo court trial and is sentenced to hang. But he manages to escape, chained to another capital prisoner Suzanne Pleshette.

Pleshette and Herbert manage to escape shackled to each other. The bulk of the story is the two of them shackled together trying to escape a corrupt and vicious sheriff.

Pleshette makes one excellent spitfire and James took out a patent on playing corrupt redneck sheriffs of any era.

Fans of James and Pleshette should not miss this episode.

Once again, the supporting characters seriously impair an episode.

"Cimarron Strip" is a decent TV series...decent enough that it's worth seeing on YouTube. However, the show had two huge deficits working against it...it was shown against some of the hottest shows on TV at the time and the supporting characters were, at best, annoying and useless. "Till the End of Night" is yet another example of how useless the supporting cast can be...though it IS still watchable.

This episode centers on MacGregor (Percy Herbert)....probably the weakest character on the show. For the most part, his personality is that he's Scottish and he's a useless deputy who you really cannot count on in the pinch....not much in the way of depth. Well, the Marshall (Stuart Whitman) must travel to another city to testify in a court case and he plans on leaving the town with MacGregor in charge. But before he leaves, a gunman tries to jump Marshall Crown and he's caught and jailed...with MacGregor to watch him. Not surprisingly, in a VERY badly written scene, MacGregor loses the prisoner!!! And, this is only moments after the Marshall leaves!!! What a useless idiot!!!

Fortunately, what follows IS good...and obviously inspired by the movie "The Defiant Ones"...but instead of black and white man escaping custody while handcuffed together, it's MacGregor and a scrappy lady (Suzanne Pleshette). And so, it's up to the Marshall to save the useless MacGregor by the end of the show. While this all sounds pretty bad, it is much better than the first part and seeing the handcuffed pair working together was charming at times. Worth seeing but severely flawed, as who wants to see repeated episodes anchored by annoying supporting characters?!
