What jerks!
planktonrules21 November 2013
I might have scored "The Journey Ends Halfway" a bit higher, but the show loses a point for taking Caucasians and having them poorly imitate Asians. Aside from Bert Kwouk and a female character, I didn't notice any other real Asians in the show! There is a fake smuggling ring in a repressive country. What do they do exactly? They smuggle people OUT---or at least that's what they promise. The problem is that they only smuggle people halfway out--and then shoot them and dump the bodies after robbing them. Drake's assignment is to locate this group of cut-throats and then find out who the ringleader is--and then eliminate them.

This is an interesting premise for the show and it's handled in the typical "Danger Man" way--which is quite nice but a bit rushed--being a half hour show only.

Holy Guest Stars!
CoastalCruiser21 March 2015
Burt Kwouk plays the hotel clerk, one of FIVE appearances in the Danger Man series. He is topped only by Warren Mitchell, who appeared in six DM episodes! Burt is famous to me as Inspector Clouseau's sidekick Kato from the Pink Panther movies. Burt would lie in waiting for when Peter Sellers came home from a long day of fumbling around the office, only to be attacked by his man servant while trying to change clothes. It was hilarious fun.

The IMDb filmography for Burt Kwouk reveals a total of two appearances in the 1/2 hour Danger Man series, and three guest star roles in the 1 hour series. He is a very versatile actor.

Drake becomes a refugee

Warning: Spoilers
John Drake's Mission: Discover what is happening to refugees from an unnamed, unfriendly Asian country. The refugees seem to be disappearing in route to freedom.

I'm going to rate The Journey Ends Halfway a dreaded, wishy-washy 5/10. To me, it's no better than average. While parts of the episode worked, other parts didn't.

What worked:

  • A couple of the actors gave performances that really stood out. I really enjoyed seeing Burt Kwouk as Tai and Anna May Wong as Miss Lee. As a plus, it was nice to see actual Asians play such important roles.

  • The scene where Drake and Miss Lee make their escape from the hotel was very well done. It's about as entertaining a scene as you'll find in any Danger Man episode.

What didn't work:

  • The ending is horribly predictable. From the moment the doctor appeared on screen, it was too easy to see where The Journey Ends Halfway was headed.

  • What's up with Drake's accent? Is he supposed to be speaking in some Asian language? It sounded more like a speech impediment to me.
