A problematic episode

Warning: Spoilers
Very much an episode of its time - John's punishment for dating a student would be far more severe today.

it's not my favourite episode, it's a lot of build up for not as much pay off. More time in the second series was spent on John and the character of Ken, and I much preferred the show when it was centred on the 1-2-1 gang.

Perhaps John Sullivan realised that others felt the same, and the subsequent Christmas Special focused on them more heavily.

Ultimately the sad death of star Ralph Bates meant that a 3rd series was never made, but in all honesty I think the retooling of the show in series 2 perhaps indicated that it had run its course.

When it was good though 'Dear John' was a great show, and up there with the best of anything Sullivan produced.

Doesn't really work.

John has started dating the very beautiful, and much younger Karen, ken is keen to find out if she has any friends. On a brighter note, John is in the running for The Headmasters job at the school.

I honestly can't believe that John Sullivan wrote this, it just lacks any spark, any imagination, it's just worlds away from the first series. John's faux paw with Karen, it feels so awkward now.

One funny moment, Louise's outburst at Sylvia's husband, and his choice of clothes.

The jokes have run dry, and the humour feels very forced. It's impossible to look upon John as a sex object, what on Earth has happend to him this, he's quite literally a new man.

There's only one more episode to go, The Christmas special, hopefully it will pick up.

4/10.
