FOLLOW THE SUN – The Girl from the Brandenburg Gate - 1961
This is episode 16 from the 1961-62 series, FOLLOW THE SUN. The series, which ran for 30 episodes, follows a trio of free-lance magazine writers. The three are played by Barry Coe, Gary Lockwood and Brett Halsey. The gimmick here is that they are based in Honolulu. Also with recurring roles are Gigi Perreau as their secretary, and Jay Lanin as their contact with the local Police. Of course the three newsmen are always getting involved with the usual assortment of nasty types.
Reporter Gary Lockwood is involved in a minor traffic incident with Inger Stevens. Before the Police arrive, Stevens hides a small bundle in Lockwood's car. The Police gobble up Miss Stevens because she has no driver's licence or id other than a West German Passport.
Every one ends up down at the local precinct to straighten the matter out. Soon, Abraham Sofaer, Stevens' uncle puts in an appearance. He promises to pay for any damage. The cops let Steven's off with a warning for no licence. Lockwood heads off to keep a meeting he has.
Now we find out that Stevens and Sofaer, along with another man, Rex Holman, are in town to sell counterfeit $10 plates. The problem now for Stevens and company, are, that she had hidden sample bills in Lockwood's car. She had ditched said bills in case the Police had searched her over the car accident.
Now the trio, Stevens, Sofaer and Holman go through a series of efforts to retrieve the bills. What they don't know is that Lockwood had found the bills and pocketed them. Stevens is sent over to put some smooth moves on the young reporter. When that fails, Holman pays a late night visit with a pistol to recover the funny money. This fails as well, and Lockwood is now alerted that there is something fishy with the moola.
Lockwood checks with his pal on the Honolulu Police, Jay Lanin. He brings in a couple of Treasury men. Lockwood is told about a Nazi ww2 plot to make phony U.S. currency. The Nazi's had planned on flooding the States with the stuff to bring down the U.S, economy. The war had ended before this could happen. But several of the plates were still missing. The Government types figure Steven etc are here to sell the plates to a big time Mob connection, Henry Brandon.
The Treasury boys ask Lockwood to go along with a sting operation to snag everyone involved. Of course this goes sideways when the villains decide to change the meet location. They grab up Lockwood from in front of his place. It is only a bit of good luck and a solid right cross that saves his life. Holman and Sofaer are arrested but Miss Steven manages to evade capture.
She grabs a jet back to Berlin and safety. Or so she thinks, however, sitting right behind her on the aircraft, is one of the Treasury agents.
A nicely played episode with several nice plot twists. The director of this episode was former big screen helmsman, Felix E. Feist. Feist is well known to film-noir fans as the director of, THE DEVIL THUMBS A RIDE, THE THREAT, THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF, THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS and TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY.
