The plumbing has gone bad at Gull Cottage, a problem Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange) can't afford until she thinks of an idea for a story. The writer is given assistance from Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) who tells her to "take advantage of a genuine ghost writer". He relays stories from his seafaring days that Mrs. Muir types in her own style. He secretly rewrites it to be more wildly romantic and risqué. Mrs. Muir goes to Boston to sell the story to Feminine View magazine. She now has the reputation of being "that kind of woman" with Claymore (Charles Nelson Reilly) and her magazine editor Ellsworth Gordon (Kenneth Mars, "Young Frankenstein") openly romancing her.
