Heartbreak for Gidget
JordanThomasHall5 September 2017
Gidget's (Sally Field) father (Don Porter) has left and her sister Anne (Betty Conner) and her brother-in-law John (Pete Duel) are in charge. They allow her to spend the weekend at the surfing competitions at Oceanside. Unknown to Gidget, John and Anne pay a guy $25 to "keep a big brotherly eye on her without her knowing". The guy turns out to be surfing competitor Scott Baker (Carl Reindel). Scott asks Gidget to be her date for the weekend and to go to a dance that night. Scott's girlfriend Sally (Bridget Hanley) shows up at the dance to make up with him. When the situation is explained to Sally, Gidget overhears and is hurt. She eventually finds solace in Richie Ryan (David Macklin). However, Scott goes to try and make things right.

THE SINGLE GIDGET, THE UNHAPPY GIDGET
tcchelsey21 October 2023
Poor Gidge, there's now two guys in her orbit... and what to do?? It starts out with a surfing competition she wants to see, and since her dad's away, temp guardians sis Anne and husband John give her the green light --and pay one of the "adult" surfers to keep tabs????

You pretty much know what's coming next, and the episode reminds me a lot of a LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE story. Complications! Gidge falls for her temp chaperone (played by Carl Reindel) --who broke up with his gal pal --who suddenly returns! The puppy love fades to tears, that is until Gidge meets up with Richie (so well played by David Macklin). Complications!

Richie is kind of a kooky guy, taking Gidge on a romantic drive to lovers lane, complete with sandwiches? He gets a little too friendly and they booth roll out of the car into the street --just as Scott returns --who, after all, is still supposed to be keeping an eye on Gidge!

Are you taking notes?

This is goofy stuff, and so well acted, especially on the part of her two guy pals. David Macklin at the time was very popular on tv, in such shows as LASSIE and MY THREE SONS. Carl Reindel was more into movies, generally playing pilots(!), and had some noticable roles in some classic films, such as TORA, TORA, TORA and BULLIT, playing the young cop who was shot while guarding Steve MCQueen's witness.

By the way. Anne pays Scott 25 bucks to watch over Gidge, which today would be over 200 dollars! That's a lot of mazuma, and where did she get the sudden cashflow?

This episode really takes off. Do not miss. SEASON 1, remastered dvd box set.
