The kids on the beach are spellbound by the surfing of The Great Kahuna (Martin Milner, "Adam-12", "Route 66"). His old flame Buff (Julie Parrish, "Good Morning, World") comes after him, and he has Gidget (Sally Field) to pose as his lover. Buff leaves after an argument and Kahuna tells Gidget they are now maluna koalakekua- "connected forever in the design of the gods". Gidget falls in love with him, constantly daydreaming. Gidget's suspecting father (Don Porter) comes down to the beach and talks with Kahuna. She tells her father that she adores Kahuana and wants to live the free and easy, cool lifestyle with him. Kahuna arrives at the house in a suit and says his real name is Cassius Cobb. His ideas have changed to wanting to settle down in an idyllic suburban family life, throwing Gidget for a loop. Now it's her turn.

KAHUNAS AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE!

Every beach has one; a legendary Kahuna! Master surfer extraordinairre, and then some. Gidget has the distinct honor of meeting the Great Kahuna (well played by Martin Milner) who has girl problems.
So he uses Gidge to pose as his other "surfer girl" to make his long time steady sooooo jealous!
What a summer bummer deal!
You have to admit, Gidge is a sight to see, sprawled out on his beach bed, and pretending to smoke a cigarette? Mercy! Enter Buff (played by Julie Parish) and sparks fly all over the place. One little problem. Gidget actually thinks Kahuna is into her.
What happens next is a combination of lovesickness and daydreams for Gidge, prompting professor Lawrence to pay a visit to the beach celeb.
Do clothes make a difference? Kahuna stops by the house the next day --with all his clothes on! -- and reveals his true name, which is Cass, a part time surfer dude who is actually just another guy. Will Gidge accept such a revolting SHOCK? Best of it all are Sally Field's priceless expressions.
Martin Milner plays his part fairly well, and not too long before he jumped into unform and joined ADAM 12.
Julie Parrish (as Buff), has a small but good role, who soon after this episode would appear in the Elvis Presley film PARADISE, HAWAIIN STYLE. She later co-starred in the tv series, RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE.
