Blanche has regret trusting a convict, and Sophia is tied up and gagged!
blanbrn19 September 2021
This "Golden Girls" episode from season 5 number 13 which aired in Jan. Of 1990 called "Mary Has a Little Lamb" was funny and well written having two different side stories to follow. A teen girl named Mary who's late mom was a friend of the Girls seeks trust and advice after she gets pregnant from an older guy, as she can not get any support and help from her stubborn tough dad and Mary has no motherly advice since mom has passed that's why Dorothy is such a godmother and helps bring reason and advice. Next in a wild and crazy subplot man chaser southern belle Blanche(Rue McClanahan) takes up a side hobby of having a prison pen pal and this guy is getting released and he goes looking to meet Blanche for a date. A lesson is learned that you should never trust anyone especially a convict as this guy has not changed or became a good boy as seen and this was a highly memorable episode when he robs the "Golden Girl" house taking items like fine gold and diamonds, and old outspoken Sophia(Estelle Getty) is shut up and has a damsel in distress scene as being the only one home at the time Sophia is tied up and gagged by the ex con as he robs the house and escapes, never fear the story ends good as he's caught and goes back to jail. Overall good funny memorable episode that was well written with two different stories.

Mary Has a Little Lamb (#5.13)

Warning: Spoilers
The neighborhood girl comes over for a visit and turns out that she is pregnant at 16 and had a fight with her father. The girls take her in and try to get her father reconnect with her. And Blanche is writing romantic letters to a guy in prison, but when he comes out she feels she may have done a mistake.

Now this is an episode addressing the issue of teen pregnancy. Was fun to see Dorothy using a St. Olaf story to convince Fred to get back with his daughter, and it worked! Was also nice to recognize one of the gust actors, Julie McCullough. She did a good job as a pregnant teenager.

The prisoner story is there mostly for fun and did bring some laughs.

A dark episode with humor is an odd one.

Warning: Spoilers
The girls take in a 16 year old neighbor girl whose father has kicked her out for getting pregnant. "Golden Girls* didn't always succeed when they dealt with neighbors even with the help of spinoff "Empty Nest", and it comes down to the fact that these characters seem intrusive when given the same plot. Other sitcoms had neighbors as recurring players, and that's what made the spinoffs in some cases more successful.

Then, there's the B plot, concerning Blanche's penpal from a local prison who is paroled and makes a bee line to see Blanche. That's where more of the humor comes in, especially as Blanche tries to hide her identity when she realizes who she is. This episode shows how Dorothy shouldn't tell St. Olaf stories because the ones she does end up liking them and want to hear more.
