Good episode that lacks in chemistry for the special couple.

Warning: Spoilers
Scott Jacoby is back as Dorothy's son, Michael, getting married to an older black woman (Rosalind Cash) which disturbs both families for different reasons. Dorothy doesn't like the fact that Cash is so much older, and her mother (Virginia Capers) doesn't like the fact that Michael is white. But there's a reason why they are getting married, and it takes quite a bit of understanding, even though Lorraine (Cash) is a very nice woman, understanding of the conflict this will cause. It's interesting that the race issue comes from Lorraine's family, and the arguments are handled with sly humor that shows the ridiculousness of racism and ageism. Capers is joined by veteran actress Lynn Hamilton ("Sanford & Son") as her sister. Their initial aggression soon comes to an understanding over their mutual love of cheesecake. But it's the likable nature of Cash that makes the episode work even if there's no real chemistry between her and the often irritating Scott Jacoby.

This show was way ahead of its time.

Michael arrives with startling news, he's marrying Greta Wagner, a woman almost twice his age, a woman who happens to be black.

I think it would be very easy for people to deem this episode as racist, and whilst there are some comments that are outdated, the essence of the episode is white something.

I think the slant they went for, that prejudice can exist anywhere, and in any form. This show was truly ahead of its time. I still think that for many, age gaps are still frowned upon by many.

Plenty of funny moments, the scene with the face mask and mirror was hilarious, I had to rewind that back a few times, Rose's trip down Memory Lane, and of course Blanche's antics.

Schnaumatians, I love the idea of those.

9/10.

Mixed Blessings (#3.23)

Warning: Spoilers
Michael comes to tell Dorothy that he is getting married. He also warns her that the bride is "kind of black", but when Lorraine comes there is another surprise in that she is twice his age. Dorothy is completely against it, and Lorraine's mother is against the wedding because she doesn't want her daughter to marry a "skinny white boy". They all want to stop the wedding, but then it comes out that Lorraine is pregnant and they accept it.

Good episode. I am just upset how they keep on dealing with different age relationships. When Blanche's father married a woman probably 3 times younger than him Blanche accepted it at the end because it made him happy. All relationships where the woman was older were looked down on and this case they just accept it because they have to. Which is sad, would be nice they had the same acceptance Blanche's dad got.

It had lots of funny moments though. Like Blanche and Rose coming in with mud masks looking like offensive blackfaces when Lorraine's family was there. And many many other things they said about race and age. I think in these days it would be a it over the line, but back then it was a pretty good natured and tolerant attitude.

Ive been watching this show from the start and for some reason this episode isn't there. If I go to another source then a different episode is missing. Not sure if Prime is racist or what as this episode is about Dorothy's son engages to an older black lady and has amazing actress in it.

Warning: Spoilers
I remember Mixed Blessings, with the age barrier and race barrier with Dorothy having to confront both when his son wants to marry an African-American woman twice his age.

Definitely a bold episode for the times for sure.
