Blanche brings out the welcome mat from her bedroom.

Warning: Spoilers
Veteran actor Monte Markham makes the first of two appearances as Blanche's brother Clayton, one of three other siblings who were introduced during the show's run. She tries to set him up with a female co-worker, but that's not the gender he's romantically attracted to. This wasn't the first time that "Golden Girls" had a gay character on the show, but it takes the plot further by making it a sibling of one of the major characters, and shows Blanche's objections and refusal to accept it even though Clayton has no reason to lie.

I wouldn't consider Blanche as homophobic, even if her behavior exudes that. A lot of times, family members are accepting of certain things as long as it doesn't impact their family directly. Considering that Blanche works in the arts, dresses flamboyantly and is basically a drag queen with female anatomy, she would most likely have a lot of gay male acquaintances.

Rose may be naive, but she accepts everybody for who they are, and Dorothy is a less vocal version of the very liberal "Maude". As for Sophia, her line, "The man's as gay as a picnic basket!" indicates that she's ok with homosexuality but finds certain aspects of it to be worth making fun of.

This episode briefly deals with Sophia's belief that she's going to die, but that is barely dealt with fortunately. This is a practically perfect episode that has a few flaws, particularly Clayton's announcement that he slept with Rose, Blanche's obnoxious reaction to that lie, her making a fool out of herself in a bar, and her decision to change restaurants after Clayton expresses an interest upon hearing how the waiters are dressed. Then there's the ridiculous setup of Sophia's fedora wearing friend Mildred and the lines which made Sophia think she was dying. And honestly, who wears a fedora while bowling?

Scared Straight (#4.9)

Warning: Spoilers
Blanche's brother Clayton is coming for a visit. She sets him up for a date but soon Rose runs into him in a park and he confesses that he is gay but still couldn't tell it to Blanche. When he does tell it to Blanche she is first shocked but at the end accepts it like a good sibling would.

So once again do the Golden Girls touch the subject of homosexuality and they do it pretty well. They did talk what would happen if a relative is gay before, but in this one they also get to show it to us.

The scene in the restaurant is pretty good, especially when Blanche thinks it is a gay bar and then thinks she converted one of them.

Very Risky and Very Good

The Golden Girls was known as a series that took no boundaries in their subject matter, and "Scared Straight" certainly shows they didn't care what they discussed.

Blanche's brother comes to visit, and she tries to set him up on a couple of dates. But, he reveals to Rose he is gay, and he doesn't know how to reveal it to Blanche. Then, complications ensue when her brother claims Rose and he slept together.

A really funny, brave episode that tackles the subject of homosexuality effortlessly, and fearlessly. There's also another storyline that is pointless; Sophia thinks she is going to die in 2 days, and no one takes her seriously. It is pointless and not very funny, but you can look over it.

A pioneering episode to deal with LGBT.

Covered an issue that was still somewhat taboo to talk about at the time. Both this episode and the previous episode really pushed the boundaries.

Like sister, like brother.

Blanche is super excited when her brother Clayton arrives for a visit. Blanche sets Clayton up on a blind date with a beautiful woman, it isn't a success, Clayton explains the reason for the failed date to Rise.

This show truly was ahead of its time, I'm not sure any other sitcom of this stature back in the late 80's was dealing with subjects in the way that The Golden Girls did.

This is yet another magical, wonderful, funny and sweet episode, terrifiic.

Several wonderful scenes to enjoy here, that moment where Clayton admits his secret to Rose is great, and that scene where the makes his admission about Rose was just a joy. Best of all, Blanche and Clayton's heart to heart, magical.

Sophia steals it with that line, 'the man's as gay as a picnic basket,' hilarious.

Monte Markham was just wonderful as Clayton, hopefully we'll get to see more of him, the stories they could have.

10/10.

Excellent Golden Girls Episode

Warning: Spoilers
I recently saw the episode where Clayton, Blanche's brother comes out of the closet. It is a touching and thoughtful episode about sibling relationships that are sometimes tried. Blanche has a hard time initially accepting Clayton's gayness. Blanche becomes more accepting during the show. What is funny to me is when Rose runs into Clayton is the park sitting on a bench. She questions Clayton as to what type of "woman" he likes. Eventually he nods to a handsome man passing. Rose's awareness of Clayton's liking of men is hysterical. There's more to the show, but I will leave that up to you. Enjoy!
