"Florida Goes to School" opens with James ecstatic over his new position as assistant foreman of shipping and receiving for a manufacturing company, enabling him to bid farewell to the car wash once and for all. Florida returns home with news of her own, planning to earn her diploma by attending night school. What sticks in her husband's craw is the fact that his 6th grade education will be superseded by her latest success. She offers a stirring defense, as being a black woman with no diploma makes her the lowest priced spread in the job market. The male chauvinist blames Willona for putting the bee in Florida's bonnet: "as usual, your mouth is working overtime but your brain done took the day off!" The argument degenerates into bad grammar over the word 'ain't.' Hal Williams appears as James' buddy Willie Jay Washington, who shares similar ideas about women and education: "if the good Lord had wanted women to go to school he would have given them brains!"
