Boxing ep still packs a pretty powerful punch
bobstevens-168107 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It is true that Meadows was somewhat miscast in this. Thankfully they only gave her an actually marginal guest role. Also, this maybe the first funny H-FO ep since the way better Joyce Van Patten/ Andy Griffith of season 5. As a funny or at least attempted funny ep it really mostly missed.

But there was still some good boxing action. One person does get killed so it seems eventful.

Also, the tough Kimo and the beautiful Lori have a good moment when they figure out from what floor of a nearby building an assassin struck from. About just their characters. Admit it! They had some potential to be a permanent part of the show. All right. The grim but great powerful first Danno Williams years of the show were long, long gone by now but the show was still very serviceable! And more!

No the very worst show in the series, but ample proof that season 12 was a mistake.

The main plot idea from "Sign of the Ram" is pretty good--even if it is lifted, believe it or not, from the film "The Producers". However, given that it's season 12 (and seasons 11 and 12 of "Hawaii Five-O" were just awful), it's not surprising that they STILL managed to screw this one up and make an embarrassing show.

The program begins with a boxer leaving the gym--and seeing his manager getting shot to death! Who would do this and why? Well, the who and why are pretty interesting. What is NOT interesting is a kooky astrologer (Jayne Meadows) coming into the show for absolutely no reason other than comic relief. Her predictions are often wrong and she was just an annoyance. What's worse, a previous episode had a pretty much identical character (and that episode was bad, too) but to explain why a different actress and different character is in this one, they say that "she and other astrologer TRADED practices--and the other lady is now in Albuquerque"! Huh?! This made no sense--nor did much of anything about this part of the show.

The bottom line is that playing that character for comic relief is a clear sign that the series had long since jumped the shark (i.e., it was past its peak). Dumb and goofy--despite an interesting plot. Not worth seeing unless you are a die-hard fan of "Hawaii Five-O".

Down for the count

I loved nearly every season of the original Five O series, but this episode was almost as bad as the reboot episodes. Wooden dialogue and weak riffs sounding like imitation film noirs abound. Not a shock that many of the fans say this was the worst of the twelve seasons.
