I mentioned Gary Hart simply because some of this episode of "Hawaii Five-O" is a bit reminiscent of Hart's ill-advised affair that ruined his political career back in the mid-1980s. Both he and the main character in this show, Congressman Carr (David Birney) ended up getting caught by reporters when they were cheating--though in the case of "The Silk Trap", the reporter ended up being über-EVIL!! That's because not only did he help set up the Congressman with a woman but filmed it AND had his men kill this beauty contestant!!! Unfortunately for the Congressman, he was drugged and had no idea if he killed the girl or not--so to protect his butt, he never went to the police. And, when the reporter approached Congressman Carr with blackmail, the poor guy is really stuck. Common sense would say go to the police--but this is only 15 minutes into the episode--so there is a lot more to it than this.
This is a pretty good episode. In fact, I would have rated higher except for one major problem: the writer of the show had no idea how to write for women. The character 'Miss King' is ridiculously written and it must have been hard for Shannon Wilcox to utter this tripe! When she (the beauty pageant director) first meets McGarrett, she snarls, screams and acts like a woman off her meds!! It really made no sense and she was 100% angry at McGarrett--a man who had absolutely nothing to do with the crime! I understand about misplaced aggression but this really made no sense and seemed to reinforce the old 'dumb woman' stereotype. She really made me cringe. It's a shame, as otherwise the show is original and well-written.
