There are no perfect crimes only imperfect detective work
sol-kay6 July 2013
****SPOILERS**** Special Police Consultant Chief Robert T. Ironside, Raymond Burr, while at Bay Collage giving lectures on police work a sniper suddenly pops up gunning down and wounding three persons on three different occasions including Ironisde's fellow cop Officer Eve Whitfield, Barbara Anderson. Taunting the police with cryptic letters that he's going to commit the perfect crime and that, in Ironside's opinion, is the gunning down and assassination of Chief Ironside himself! Knowing that the sniper has to be a members of the collage's highly regarded shooting team Ironside checks out all it's members and comes up with a clue to the sniper's identity. The sniper rifle he used was purchased by one of it's members Ron Russell, Larry Wilson. Larry claims that he hocked it for badly needed cash at a local pawn shop but can't remember which one and has lost redemption ticket!

Ironside like a blood hound smelling that there's something not kosher in what Larry tells him zeros in on the collage boy as well as his girlfriend fellow member of the shooting team Peggy Fortune, Brenda Scott, who has issues of her own. In the fact that she's fanatically determined to be the team's star shooter and eclipse her mom who won the 1948 Olympic Gold Medal in target shooting. Wouldn't in her getting away with the perfect crime, in murdering by shooting someone and not being caught, prove her being a far more superior a sharp shooter then her mother!

****SPOILERS**** It's later that Ironside sniffs out the mysterious sniper by seeing a connection between him and Peggy and the real reason for what seems his insane actions. They are insane but somewhat seem to be logical in the sniper's sick and disturbed mind. And they have really nothing to do with the perfect crime which at first, but not later, threw Ironside off the track who now uses himself as bait to trap him. It's when the jig was up with the sniper getting caught red handed, in him trying to frame an innocent student for his crimes, by Ironside he completely flipped out. That in him trying to finish off Ironside, this time with a hand gun not a rifle, in him thinking that Ironside was as stupid as he was. Ironside wasn't alone and had police back up to make the pinch on the by now hysterical and out of control "master criminal"!
