***SPOILERS*** Moonlighting as a bank guard in order to pay the pressing medical bills for his sickly five year old son highly decorated SFPD detective Fred Hickman, Robert Lansing, decides to rob the banks daily take of $150,000.00 and together with his wife Kathie, Jane Browne, and son skip out of the country on a rented airplane. Right from the start things go wrong for Hickman when he's confronted by rookie cop Larry Reilly, Charles Brewer, whom he guns down and leave in critical condition. Now on the run for a week with all avenues of escape closed on him Hickman decides to turn himself over to his good friend former Chief of Detectives Robert T. Ironside Raymond Burr. But Hickman's plan is not to really turn himself over to the police but use Ironside and his driver Mark Sanger, Don Mitchell, to safely get him his wife and son out of the country.
Ironside who against his better judgment decides to turn Hickman in turns out to be, together with his driver Mark Sanger, his hostage instead. It's when the trio, Ironside Stanger & Hickman, get to Hickman's wife and son's hideout in a rented house outside of Lake Tahoe that sparks start to fly when Jean realizes that her sweet caring and loving husband is responsible for shooting down a San Francisco policemen who's now on life support. Besides that Hickman who had in it for him from the start viscously pistol whips Mark Sanger so bad that if he doesn't get immediate medical help he may well end up dead.
****SPOILERS**** Taking advantage of all the confusion at the Hickman house Ironside coolly uses one of Hickman's son's toys to make a makeshift spear-gun to harpoon the by now out of control and crazed rouge on the lamb policeman. Not only that he's able to get his friend and driver Sanger, by Jane calling for help, the medical attention that he so desperately needs to save his life. And if this would help the by now immobile, by getting suck in the back, Hickman and his wife Jane get the good news in that the cop that Hickman gunned down-Larry Rielly-had come out of his coma and is completely recovered from his injures. Thus Hickman is not to end up facing being strapped into the notorious San Quentin gas chamber from 1st degree murder!
