This episode of It Takes a Thief included two characters (William Dover and Maggie Philbin) who appeared in the third season of the series. Noah Bain (Malachi Throne) only briefly appears in the episode via phone. This episode appeared to be show what the series had intended for the role of Noah Bain in the third season (that is, a minor figure who talks to Al on the phone). The number of guest stars in the episode was unusually large. Al goes on a vacation in Rio and then becomes involved in a situation with a Russian defector who wants asylum in the USA. Al tries to enjoy his vacation with a Countess (Dana Wynter), but keeps getting interrupted by an accident prone woman (Teri Garr), another SIA operative (John Russell), the Russian defector (Arlene Martel), and other people trying to abduct her or protect her. Unlike many of the other series episodes, Al is not recruited for a SIA undercover work in this one. The main premise of this episode is how Al's vacation keeps getting interrupted and his frustration throughout the episode.

The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of...Kinda

This episode was interesting/enjoyable to me for a couple of reasons. There were THREE...count 'em...three actor/actress persons in this episode who were also in some memorable Star Trek (original series) episodes. Teri Garr, Michael Ansara and Arlene what's her name that played Duprene, Mr. Spock's betrothed that wanted Ston instead. But, the really fun bits were the Demetrius and Quigg characters. They studied the Gutman/Joel Cairo characters in The Maltese Falcon well enough to make their nods to both of them pretty entertaining. I bet the casting people and script writers had fun with this. Star Trek and Maltese Falcon fans...enjoy!
