THAT'S MY WIFE... BUT IT ISN'T MY WIFE??
tcchelsey7 February 2023
This was the first episode of 1969 and it goes all over the place. You really have to pay very close attention .... however there is a method to the madness.

Edward Lakso, who wrote many episodes for the series, does however leave his trademark with the exciting opening scene. A jeweler is shot and stumbles out a window. A woman screams bloody murder and off we go! Lakso had lots of experience with bizarre scenes, tossing them in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and THE MOD SQUAD. He must have been a fun guy to know!

Joe gets into this case via an old army buddy, played by Fred Beir (as Bill Chase). Bill appears to have two wives and come the dead bodies. Like I said, watch carefully. Fred later became a soap opera star. Beautiful Madlyn Rhue makes a guest appearance as Laurie, one of the best tv actresses ever. Also a salute to veteran Edward Franz as Harris, a staple in many classic movies and tv cop shows. Best remembered in the creepy Halloween favorite, THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE (1959). Watch for this nifty chiller.

One note. It's a heck of a coincidence the jewelry store is near Mannix's office. Whatcha' think about that?

The familiar chase scene through all the water and brush looks to have been filmed around Griffith Park, which the crew loved. One mistake to report. Joe falls into lots of mud, though his pants get less dirty as the scene goes on! It could have been because he was so wet.

Partly filmed at the famous ROCK STORE at Cornell, California. This is a popular motorcycle hangout and tourist trap, about 12 miles north from Malibu.

Keep the coffee brewing. SEASON 2 EPISODE 13 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Decent and entertaining but with one big flaw and a few minor ones.

The show begins with the murder of a jeweler near Mannix's office. Mannix arrives and soon sees an old army buddy, Bill, in the crowd. This friend is very cryptic but asks Joe to see him out in the country about some problem. However, when he arrives, a FAKE wife tells Mannix to go up some mountain road--and Mannix is nearly killed. When he returns with the Sheriff a bit later, a DIFFERENT woman meets them--Bill's real wife! What's going on here? And why did Bill need to see Mannix? For a while, this is a confusing episode--and that's what Mannix is experiencing too. It's a strange case and one that features a lot of action....and murder. Because of these things, it is an exciting show. As for the crime and the motive...well, they are very unique! Overall, an entertaining episode but one with a pretty big flaw--why did Bill happen to be in Los Angeles at that particular jewelry store right next to Mannix's place? Too coincidental, that's for sure. And what's with the hot-headed Sheriff?! What?

What are the odds?

Warning: Spoilers
Mannix runs into an old Army buddy from the Korean War when both end up in the crowd at the scene of a murder in Mannix's neighborhood. The odds of that are about ohhh... a zillion to one. Anyway, in classic TV PI fashion, the buddy is in trouble and Mannix promises to help. As the first reviewer said, the story is confusing but hang in there for the payoff. The old army buddy always gets TV detectives in trouble. It happened to Jim Rockford. Every one of Frank Cannon's friends are killed, go bad, or in trouble. Being the friend of a TV detective is like being the partner of the hero in movies. I don't like your chances. Madlyn Rhue and John Milford provide excellent support. Not sure I want a sheriff with this guy's obvious obsession running around with a badge and gun. You would think someone in the town would have noticed and done something. Sure enough, Mannix is shot and wounded at the end. I think he is going for the "Sgt Saunders" record of most times shot and wounded. No Purple Heart though. The chance meeting exceeds belief but a decent story. Give it a look.
