Mild

Average episode.

Mary romances a much younger guy (Peter Strauss) but soon realises they have little in common.

Luckily Rhoda is in the majority of scenes, as she generates most of the laughs.

Making Their Point
ccthemovieman-110 January 2010
Mary has a new boyfriend, a guy she met at the market. Immediatetly, they hit it off but nosy Rhoda has to ruin things by asking how old is the guy? He appears too young for her, she thinks (not that it's any of her business, but apparently she thinks so. Actually, though, Lou and Ted say the same thing and it's proved to be true.) Anyway, it turns out while Mary is 33 this guy ("Stephen") is just 25.....not THAT huge a gap but......

......The show points out the problems inherent with trying to be involved with someone younger than you. The episode has some funny lines (what MTM show didn't?) but it gets its point across more visually when Mary and Rhoda go to a party at Stephen's ' "pad." Boy, can you see a "generation gap" there, or at least a cultural gap between professional full-worker who dresses as an adult and a 20-something who looks and acts like a late teen. It's exaggerated, of course, to prove the writer's point but it's effective.

It's a Big Gap

Mary meets a younger guy at a supermarket and makes snow angels with him. They have a nice time but there's eight years difference in their ages. She tussles with this, actually going to a boutique to find some clothes to wear to his party. She talks Rhoda into going to the party as backup. It turns out that the age wasn't the big difference but the aspirations and the experiences of the guests. They just had different plans for themselves. It was obvious that the Mary's experiences and her cultural standing was so different. The young guy was really nice, but pretty clueless with the older woman. There is a little banter in the office. Ted comes in all happy because he got "consummated."

How does Mary do it ?

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know how in the world Mary has managed,as long as she has,to avoid throttling the nosy, obnoxious, and annoying Rhoda. (Valerie Harper plays a great part as Rhoda, great enough to get her own show in fact!) In this good episode,Mary meets a younger man,8-years or so younger. They spend a little bit of time together and seem to enjoy one-another's company. So far so good... 'Reliable Rhoda' gets wind of the situation, and for reasons both good and bad,she tries to throw a wet blanket onto the budding romance. Perhaps there is a bit of envy/jealously on Rhoda's part ? As the episode moves along,it becomes clear that dog-gone Rhoda may just be right about the whole situation! After Mary and Rhoda go to a party hosted by her new beau and his friends,it is crystal clear that Mary and her new guy are at different life stages, and have little in common with each other to build a relationship on. Fun episode.

Very Silly Episode
nbrice1825 August 2020
Overdone episode where Mary finds out the cute guy that she's going out with is 8 years her junior.

All of a sudden instead of looking and acting 33, when Mary and Rhoda go to the party they look and act 63. Lots of the clothes that Mary and Rhoda have worn over the years were stylish and "hip" (for the 1970s). All of a sudden they are dressing like schoolteachers? Seriously?

My other pet peeve is that Hollywood has never understood the Mid-west (or what used to be the Mid-west). The clerk at the clothes store and 2 guests at the party spoke with New York accents. Poor writing and editing for this one.
