Thirty Years of Pain
Hitchcoc25 February 2017
There are two plot elements here. The first one involves Ted insisting that he be given a bachelor party. He's already married but that doesn't stop him from whining and complaining until Mary relents. Once again, they are at her apartment. Su Ann is at her worst. Lou is upset because a woman who sent him a Dear John letter during World War II wants to see him. She broke his heart and even sold his engagement ring to go on a honeymoon with another guy. He starts off by not wanting to go, but Mary tells him that it's been a long time and to accept the adventure. After much cajoling in Mary's bedroom, Lou heads off for a restaurant where she is, with striking results.

I want to remember her just as I left her

OK episode.

Newlywed Ted insists Mary throw him a belated bachelor party. Meanwhile Lou has been contacted by an old flame who broke his heart, and vacillates over going to see her again.

Many familiar elements get a rerun here. The final act at the restaurant is great fun, as is the tag scene.

Aside from the rest of the episode, Lou Grants way of handling an old flame that turns out to be nothing but a tramp by all respects is classic. The bachelor party portion contains some great one liners and with Sue Anne Nivens in the mix you can't help but have a good episode.

Never on Sundae

Warning: Spoilers
In my sixty plus years of life I've had three major crushes on various woman. They were all DOOMED in failure. I wanted romance, tenderness and ultimately intimacy. Didn't happen. This episode of The MTM Show is a classic example of the term, "Despite the amount of years gone by, most people remain the same." Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore) receives a phone call at her office from a Veronica Ludlow (Beverly Garland) asking for her boss Lou Grant (Edward Asner). Mary relays the message to Lou with devastating results as Lou explains how Veronica was the real love of his life and on the eve of Battle during World War II eating chipped beef out of helmet, Lou receives a cold "Dear John" letter ending the relationship. This tormented Lou for years as Mary witnesses the anguish on Lou's face as the old wounds open before her. Meanwhile on another front,a trivial problem arises involving the vain news anchor Ted Baxter (Ted Knight). Ted who is recently married was never given a bachelor party. Ted assigns Mary the job of hosting the bachelor party at her apartment. For those who watch this comedy know all to well the running gag throughout the series is that Mary throws the worse parties ever. Lou wonders if he should meet Veronica again in a restaurant. Instead Lou attends the makeshift co-ed bachelor party with the perky Lou -obsessed Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White) running the show. Lou is angry and distant with the company. After a talk with Mary, Lou ventures out to the restaurant and meets with Veronica with interesting results. Script writer David Lloyd ties together lost love, reunion and revenge in a clever way.
