Dating the teacher
Rrrobert16 July 2019
Another dating episode. Continuing from the previous episode, Mary Tyler Moore is amping up the full comedy performance with the nervous physicality bit.

Mary takes a television journalism class and Rhoda tags along. As often happens, Mary catches the teacher's eye and they start dating. You have to forgive the nature of the sitcom format and the economy of storytelling necessary: their first date is right after the first class and they seem practically engaged by the end of it, but by the next episode the new love interest has been forgotten about.

At least here Michael Tolan is effortlessly cool, attractive and funny as the teacher. As the only real professional in a class of dilettantes, Mary's head swells and she hilariously takes over in class discussions. She talks Lou into presenting to the class in another comic highlight.

School Days

When Mary has trouble with some writing at the newsroom, Phyllis talks her into taking a journalism class. Rhoda joins her because there are men there. Mary becomes a big showoff in the class, but catches the eye of her handsome instructor. They start going out. It's funny how none of these guys seem to last till the next episode. Anyway, the thing is that she gets sort of caught up in her self perceived celebrity. She makes one big mistake, volunteering Lou to speak to the class. He speaks for about fifteen seconds and then terrifies the class when they try to ask questions. Mary has quite a surprise at the conclusion which is hard for her to deal with. There is some cool byplay between Lou and Ted.

This was great.

All these years later this still wipes the floor with most modern comedy, or what passes for it.

Full of great laughs and moments, this was a joy.
