PETER GUNN – Crisscross - 1959

This is episode 40 from the 1958 to 61 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.

Bank manager Ted Knight decides to rob his own bank. He has a new dolly in his life, Sylvia Lewis. Lewis is a high maintenance type of chippy and cash is needed to keep her happy. Knight sets off several sleeping gas bombs off in the bank, dons a gas-mask and loots a quarter million in cash from the safe. He hands off the take to a man he has waiting outside, Leonard Graves. Knight also hands off the gas mask and then returns to the bank. The gas soon renders him unconscious along with the rest of the bank staff. This will give him a perfect alibi for the perfect plan.

The perfect plan immediately goes sideways when Graves does a cross and hotfoots it with the cool quarter mill. Knight and Lewis are of course not happy with this turn of events. They decide to get some help in finding Graves. Lewis pays Private Investigator, Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) a visit. After giving Stevens a cock and bull story, she hands Stevens a couple of grand and sets him after Graves.

Using his underworld contacts, Stevens soon discovers that Graves has fled the States. Graves is now hiding out in Italy. Stevens flies over to see if he can pick up the trail. What he does not know is that Knight is following him.

Stevens of course finds his man. Now Mr. Knight shows and waves a revolver at everyone. Knight makes his "case" to Graves for the return of the cash. This needless to say involves the laying on of some pistol butt to Graves' head. Stevens now realizes he has been played for a chump and also draws steel. Guns blaze and soon a general free for all erupts. Graves is killed and Knight gets the sound thumping he deserves.

The Police are called and Stevens heads home to the arms of Lola Albright. (lucky guy) (b/w)

Mary Tyler Moore He Ain't

Fairly good episode, distinguished now by presence of Ted Knight as the chief bad guy. Fans of classic TV will remember Ted as the comically egotistical Ted Baxter on the old Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77). There he stole the spotlight from the rest of an ace cast with his unforgettably clueless character. Here, he's a remorseless killer and bank robber, of all things. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it, a real tribute to his versatility.

Plot-wise-- Seems Poole (Knight) is a bank manager who stages a fogged-up robbery of his own bank. But then a confederate flees to Italy with the loot leaving Poole empty-handed. So he uses a ruse to hire Pete to track down the double-crosser. And things go from there.

Wow, I wish we saw more of cat-eyed Barbara (Lewis). She's got exotically feline features that are unforgettable. Also, Italian girl Carlotta (Roman) cuts an enchanting presence, along with the ever-seductive Edie (Albright). So guys especially, tune in. There's also some good snappy banter between Jacoby and Pete, along with the usual riveting hook. But can't say much for the phony fisticuffs of which there's more than usual. Anyhow, it's an overall entertaining 30-minutes with a solid cast line-up

The story starts of with audacious bank robbery by inside man Poole who robs his own bank while gassing his co workers.

He hands the loot to his hidden associate and then Poole is also knocked out by the gas.

Only Poole finds himself empty handed as his associate has fled with all the money.

Poole sends his attractive girlfriend to Peter Gunn with a story hoping that he will do all the legwork.

Gunn finds that the associate is in Italy and goes after him. Poole is not far behind to double cross everyone.

The studios bring out their continental europe sets for Italy. There is a chance for several actors to try out an Italian accent.

Gunn feels like a clod that he has been played. Maybe he should not had taken the story from a beautiful lady at face value.
