I guess this is what TV Tropes calls a "Fetch Quest"...

Warning: Spoilers
I cannot say I was bored while watching this episode, mostly because the alchemy between Vala and Daniel is still great: she drives him completely insane but he gets her better than she does. Even though she is still very far from becoming a SG member, she clearly is too good to lose --at least from a scriptwriter's point of view. This is a good thing, considering that we're still (sorely) missing Carter, and that Teal'c only makes random appearances at SGC --leaving us with a rather problematic case of Where's My Series Again?

The problem with this episode is that, even though Vala's antics and fibs ARE entertaining, this is about all the plot has to offer. There is little character development and almost no action to speak of, so we're left watching people lie and barter for about 3/4 of the episode. The team spends days hunting for a Thingummy that will lead them to a Trinket which is in turn necessary to obtain a piece of Stuff. Just add a small victorious jingle as each Quest is finished, and you have yourself a very nice old-school adventure game instead of a SG-1 episode. And let me say, the conclusion does not improve that feeling of uselessness.

So while the dialogue is interesting and continues to develop Vala's character and relationships, there is little to say about the rest. Really, the series is taking its sweet time finding its pace again. The only thing that feels sadly familiar, unfortunately, is SG-C's continued problems with financing and the IOA, but that part is barely touched upon.

Cheated People

When Vala leaves the SGC, Daniel faints and Dr. Carolyn Lam concludes it is a side effect of the removed bracelets. Vala returns and together with Daniel and Mitchell, they need to deal with people cheated by Vala trying to revert the effects.

"The Ties That Bind" is a funny episode of SG-1 showing the character of Vala. She has cheated so many people in the galaxy that is amazing how she is still alive. My vote is seven.

Carter

This wasn't one of their better episodes but it doesn't deserve some of the low ratings is got, IMO. As far as Sam goes, I believe that Amanda was pregnant at the time. That was mentioned as a trivia in the first episode. I checked and she gave birth on March 5, 2005. She probably wasn't medically able to do some episodes.

A lot of back and forth
Calicodreamin9 April 2022
A lot of back and forth in this episode and not much gained from any of it. Storyline was weak and didn't developed the characters or the major story arcs.

What happened to SG-1
hdden2 November 2020
I've been binge watching with my wife and the first 8 seasons were good. I wanted to watch the entire series from S1E1 to S10E20, it's beginning to look like I won't make it. Any episodes with Vala are trying my patience, I even nodded out during the episode Origin. This episode is nothing but a boring trip through the galaxy overcoming all of her con games. And now SGC has to have an oversight committee or face a reduced budget. The Jaffa have a new leader who isn't what he seems. My opinion Stargate SG-1 has lost its luster, find something else to watch.

Oh What a Tangled, and Boring, Web Vala Weaves
fcabanski1 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Watch this if you like bad jokes, side characters worthy of a bad video game, and being bored to death.

The bracelets are off, but Daniel and Vala are still connected. In order to find the secret to disconnecting Daniel and Vala, Sg-1 must make a deal with a scientist. To get him to tell them how to fix the problem, they must retrieve his mom's necklace. To retrieve the necklace, they must retrieve a generic ship component. To retrieve the component, they must retrieve a ship.

It's a trek through an incredibly boring, cardboard, generic space based society left in the wake of the not so distant Goa'uld defeat. Somehow in that short time a Jaffa has become a low life trader hanging around in seedy market, and an alliance of former smugglers has risen to challenge the new free Jaffa group...that just formed.

Eh.

Meanwhile SGC will get a 70% budget cut unless they take on a civilian observer.

Eh.

It's only a few episodes into the big Ori story line, but SG-1 is off on a meaningless side quest. There's no progress in the Ori story, and the side story literally leads to nothing. The scientist doesn't know how to end the bracelet-less connection between Daniel and Vala.

Ah, but the pay off. The team finds out that many of the seemingly worthless items they retrieved actually had real value. They have to drag Vala back to SGC, because in her one dimension she's upset at losing all that loot. That's right, the big pay off is a bad joke.

This is a joke of an episode.

Nope

I'm about ready to give up. What has happened to this show? I get the changes and don't mind Mitchell, but I don't care for Jaffa politics, Vala's character is way too over the top, and WHERE IS CARTER? I want to finish out the last two seasons, but I'm not sure I even can. This whole episode was pointless. I was looking forward to the Ori, but just to find out they are like the Goa'uld, but with a different objective. Way too much Vala.

What happened??

Binge watching this series for the first time. Loved loved loved it til this season. The new characters, not funny or engaging. New enemy, boring. This show was so entertaining and just fun to watch til they took away O'Neill and Carter and added new people. Teal'c is barely on and Daniel has turned into a blow hard with this Vala character. So bored I don't even know if I can finish the series. Way to ruin a fantastic series folks!

I can't find enough terrible synonyms for this. Not that Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) speaks twice as fast the last 2 seasons. I think it's an attempt to induce the viewers to not notice how woeful everything else has become.
