Not what it seems.

Warning: Spoilers
All right, at first glance, this looks like it's going to be another re-tread of a standard tactic with TV writers, where they can't come up with a great story for this week, so they write a story to support a series of background flash-backs from previous episodes, just to fill up this weeks time slot.

We've seen this used in many TV series before. Usually in the Sci-Fy realm, but not always.

SURPRISE! It isn't! Although it's in the same format as things we've seen before, the flash-back sequences used are not footage of previous episodes, but original things we haven't seen before. And they explain and show the progress of how Teal'c became who he is.

Sneaky B-strd's threw one of those "Character-Development" episodes at us, and actually made it a good one.

Some great character background and development for Teal'c

Warning: Spoilers
This episode took us through a series of flashbacks of Teal'c under Bra'tac's tutelage, so that Teal'c could shake off the Goa'uld brainwashing. It filled in much needed back-story of what had happened before the series, in his service of Apophis, that led him to choose to abandon Apophis and help SG1 all the way back in Children of the Gods.

It was a well done episode, and while flashback sequences are often budget-saving reuses of old footage in a much hated 'clip show' format, this was not, and showed us a great deal of new story, with the overwhelming majority of the flashbacks being new footage.

My one little niggle, however, is that I did wonder why no-one suggested the use of the Za'tarc detector to see whether Teal'c really had broken free of the Goa'uld brainwashing. It seems to me that at least someone should have thought of it and worthy of a mention in dialogue, even if it turned out not to be useful in these circumstances.

Way Better Than I Thought It Would Be
crossnation16 September 2021
This episode serves as a follow up to the two-parter that ended season 4 and began season 5.

Teal'c is still brainwashed courtesy Apophis, so Master Bra'Tac decides that the only way he can free his mind is to undergo a dangerous ritual that will very likely kill Teal'c.

When I first saw that the ritual involved giving Teal'c flashbacks, I was ready to fast forward through most of the episode, because I thought it would be dominated by footage from earlier episodes (a "clip show," that is.)

But, boy was I wrong! Instead, nearly every flashback show new scenes featuring parts of Teal'c's past that took place before the pilot episode which provide an explanation for why he betrayed Apophis in the first place.

If you are a Teal'c fan, this episode is definitely for you. If you wondered why he betrayed Apophis in the pilot, this episode is for you. If you wondered how he became First Prime of Apophis, this episode is for you.

Simply put, don't skip it.

Most welcome character background for Teal'c

Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the episode is slow and boring, but the flashbacks fill a lot of lacunae in the story of the character. The final moments are a thrilling montage reliving the moments in which Teal'c chose to rebel against his false god.

Back from the brink

While lacking in the usual action and effects, this episode more than made up for in emotions and chemistry. The flashbacks fit the mood and set up a great backstory.

"Resetting" Teal'c's Brain
claudio_carvalho4 October 2016
After a treatment with a psychologist, the brainwashed Teal'c tries to lure Jack telling that is his friend. But Master Bra'tac sees that he is lying and remove Teal'c's symbiotic expecting to bring him back. Bra'tac explains that he needs to bring Teal'c to a near death condition to bring his memories back, but it is a dangerous procedure that may kill Teal'c. General Hammond agrees agrees to go on with the procedure under the protest of Dr. Janet Fraiser. What will be Teal'c's fate?

"Threshold" is an episode where it is necessary to "reset" Teal'c's brain. His memories are disclosed in flashbacks revealing his life with Apophis. At least, the flashbacks are not footage of previous shows. My vote is six.

Another Peter Deloise Remake of a Remake

Mediocrity. This is so redundant, I will not elaborate. I suggest skipping everything except the first and last 3 minutes of this episode. Trust me, you won't miss a thing you haven't seen many times before.
