I noticed another reviewer said this episode was the worst episode. Well, while I agree that it's not a very good one, I certainly can think of several episodes that were worse--where the Seaview fought giant jellyfish or aliens or other really fantastic situations. But, the episode is still a weak one...mostly because it had enough material for perhaps half an episode.
When the show begins, the leader of 'The Peoples Republic' (Ed Asner) is about to be shot. However, the deposed leader's supporters rescue him and he goes into hiding. Soon Admiral Nelson is called to sneak into the never named country and rescue the man because he wants to defect and bring the USA some valuable secrets. Soon, however, it becomes obvious the guy is just a vicious scum- bag.
In many ways, Brynov (Asner) seems to be modeled after Nikita Khrushchev. After all, in 1964 he was deposed and Asner bore some physical resemblance to the guy...and Khrushchev was a man who destroyed a lot of people on his way to the top. But even with a nice performance by Asner, the episode went on too long...and was kept going on longer when Nelson just inexplicably sat back and let Brynov kill people. An odd episode...not great but not bad either.
