Our story begins one rainy morning as each member of the Jetson family heads off to go about their day. Elroy is blasted off to school wearing a plastic bubble for a rain jacket and George has to head off for a long day of labor in the sprocket mines. Before departing, when Judy asks what he wants to do with his coffee, George tells her to leave it in case some Pygmies from Africa drop by and use it on the tips of their spears.... um, yeah. I don't know about you, but Pygmies are always dropping by my house on the way to the hunt, 10,000 miles out of their way. That was a terrible joke, even for George. Disgusting. Anyway, George takes off just as Jane remembers about the PTA meeting that night. She forgot to tell George. Oh well, she can call him at work and bother him about it later. Now one good thing about living in an apartment building on pneumatic stilts is that you can rise above the clouds and escape the rain. How much would YOU pay? Arriving seven minutes late for work, George attempts to turn back the clock, but is caught on Spacely candid camera, and the boss is none too happy. Suddenly there's a call. It's his old battle ax...er, Mrs. Spacely, reminding her husband of the concert that night. Surprise, surprise, Mr. Spacely had forgotten. Thinking up a lie and thinking it up quick, he tells her he has a sick man to look after and will be unable to attend. Using this lie to his advantage, Spacely invites George to come to the football game with that night, he just happened to have an extra ticket. With that fake story of George being ill, it was the perfect cover...until Mrs. Spacely calls back, insisting on helping her husband care for the sick individual. Fortunately they beat her to George's house and he puts on an oblivious, yet convincing front.
When the coast is clear, the men book it to the ball game and get Spacely's luxury box. What a game! Both teams of brooding robots tackling and turning one another to scrap metal for a touchdown. My, but football has become a violent sport in the future. Meanwhile back home, Jane suddenly remembers she has to pester George about the PTA meeting, so she calls the office and gets George's makeshift answering message saying, in a robotic voice for some reason, that he has to work overtime. Despite the fake cardboard George on the picture screen, Jane buys it. At the game, it is revealed that George is the one millionth customer and as a prize for the man with the winning ticket, he is awarded a glamorous mink coat! Ooh la la! Unfortunately, it's at this time that the oblivious wives finally realize their husbands played them for saps and, upon their return, angrily bash them over the heads with the mink box. George and Spacely are in the space doghouse, while Mrs. Spacely swears she will never forgive her husband and Jane is all ready to go home to mother...wow. Deciding to use the mink coat to their advantage, George and Spacely try to make amends with their wives, but one coat cannot satisfy two women. Throw a pair of scissors in the mix and you've got a coat and a stole. Spacely commends George for his quick thinking and promotes him to vice president...until his wife wants to accessorize with her new wardrobe, at which point Spacely's new vice president is deemed unemployed.
This episode plays a lot like an episode of the Flintstones. It's very similar to "The Flintstone Flyer" where Fred feigns illness to get out of going to the opera so he and Barney can bowl. Here, George and Spacely are similar to Fred and Barney, while the wives, pure Wilma and Betty. This was also somewhat of an out of character moment for Jane, who is usually patient and soft-spoken, with the occasional temperament, but this is the first and probably only time she's hit George. Well it's only the show's fifth episode so perhaps they were unaware of the characters' directions. Good episode.
