Bendix Still Funny As 'Chester A. Riley'
ccthemovieman-125 April 2007
"Today, we find Chester A. Riley facing a grim situation with his usual calm stoicism." With that sarcastic opening, we see Riley (William Bendix) yelling and making a fuss at work. It turns out to be a tiny fish bone caught in is mouth. However, upon examining him, the doctor notices our boy has inflamed tonsils, which have to be removed.

"But I've had these tonsils all my life; there attached to me," says Riley, who obviously doesn't want an operation. As soon as he hears the doctor order one for tomorrow, he faints. His nosy but well-meaning co-worker friend Gillis, "Hey, doc, you can do it now- he passed out!"

Next, we see Riley limping home on a cane. Talk about a guy exaggerating his illnesses! Riley plays it to the hilt with some funny lines and sight gags. For example, he tells his kid, "your father is facing the Grim Reaper." When the family finds out it's only tonsils, they laugh and make light of it....but dad faints again, and begins to make out his last will and testament.

The rest is his day at the hospital, his overreacting to everything, including the "help" his friend gives him at the hospital. The fact his operation is postponed after he has been anesthetized really makes things worse.

I enjoyed the language of the day, the wholesomeness of the family - particularly the kids "Babs" and "Junior." You don't see kids like that on TV anymore. This was my first look in 50 years at this comedy show. I enjoyed it back then and I enjoyed this one, too.
