Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

William Friedkin, Academy Award-winning filmmaker of The Exorcist, has died at the age of 87.
The director passed away in Los Angeles, according to his wife Sherry Lansing, a former producer and movie studio executive. Among other films, Friedkin also helmed The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., Sorcerer, and Rules of Engagement.
In the 1970s, Friedkin was part of a generation of directors alongside Francis Ford Coppola, Hal Ashby, and Peter Bogdanovich who blazed their own path through Hollywood. Following Friedkin’s success with The Exorcist, he formed The Directors Company with Coppola and Bogdanovich as a power play for creative independence. However, the short-lived business partnership dissolved not long after they collectively turned down Star Wars.
Friedkin’s entryway into entertainment was a two-year stint in the mailroom of the Chicago TV station WGN after high school, which kickstarted his rise into directing television shows and documentaries.

As negotiations for a new Writers Guild contract enter their final phase, the Association of Talent Agents has sent its member-agencies a 22-page summary of the “force majeure” provisions contained in the contracts of the WGA, SAG-AFTRA and the DGA. Force majeure, the ATA notes, “is a provision in a contract that addresses the parties’ obligations if an extraordinary event directly prevents one or both parties from performing.”
Each of the guilds treats force majeure differently, but generally they establish the terms under which the companies can or cannot contractually suspend or terminate deals.
At the start of the 2007-08 WGA strike, for instance, Universal Media Studios cited the force majeure provisions in the Screen Actors Guild contract when it notified regulars on several of its shows, including The Office and 30 Rock, that they were being suspended on half-pay for five weeks.

Say it ain’t so, Schmoopie! After 10 seasons and 229 side-busting episodes, we’re saying goodbye to ABC’s ’80s-based sitcom The Goldbergs. Based on the life of series creator Adam F. Goldberg, the comedy explored the gnarliest decade via big-loving mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), bombastic father Murray (Jeff Garlin) and their three children: aspiring singer Erica (Hayley Orrantia), wired Barry (Troy Gentile) and video camera–toting Adam (Sean Giambrone) — as well as Beverly’s rascally father Albert “Pops” Solomon (George Segal). “Adam always had a very specific vision, and he really established just a great template for a family comedy,” says executive producer Alex Barnow. That included Goldberg’s real home video footage at the end of most episodes. Time travel to 1980-something — a phrase heard in each episode after the pilot — and relive this most excellent sitcom. HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.
Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
In terms of movies leaving HBO Max, there are quite a lot. “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” turns into a ghost on Jan. 20, while Jon M. Chu’s delightful musical “In the Heights” leaves on Jan. 27.
Noteworthy films leaving HBO Max on Jan. 31 include the first three “John Wick” movies, the first three “Jurassic Park” films, the first two installments in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise,...

Alright, high-five: Patrick Warburton made a surprise guest appearance on “The Bachelorette” as contestant Zach Shallcross’ real-life uncle.
The actor, known for portraying Elaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) quirky boyfriend Puddy on “Seinfeld,” was first seen in a promo for Monday night’s episode, which saw star Rachel Recchia join the final four (including Shallcross) for hometown dates. In the clip, Warburton says, “I just feel sorry for those other fellas” — in his signature deep drawl that he lent to Kronk in “The Emperor’s New Groove.”
As the video made the rounds on social media, Warburton cheekily tweeted, “I’m being asked ‘why are you on The Batchelorette ?’ [sic] It’s my favorite show? I’m addicted..? I have a crush on that Zach Shallcross fellow? Or…all of the above? Or…Zach is my nephew? Or…all of the above?”

On last night’s episode of The Bachelorette, fans had to do a double-take during Zach Shallcross’ hometown visit.
As Rachel Recchia went to Zach’s home to meet his family, viewers and Rachel alike were surprised by one of the family members.
This was because Zach’s uncle, Patrick Warburton, was not only on the show Seinfeld, but he also has been a voice actor on the famous Family Guy.
Patrick is the brother of Zach’s mom, Megan, and Zach felt like his uncle was a big enough part of his life to introduce him to his potential future wife.
After the hometown visit, Zach felt entirely comfortable and one hundred percent sure that he was now totally in love with Rachel and told her as much.

Philip Baker Hall, who is known to Seinfeld fans as Lt. Bookman, the library detective, to Curb Your Enthusiasm fans as the ultra-serious Dr. Morrison and to movie fans as any in a long list of memorable characters in films such as Hard Eight, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Dogville, The Insider, The Truman Show, Rush Hour and many more, has died, according to his friend and neighbor, the Los Angeles Times sportswriter Sam Farmer. He was 90.

“I love Christmas movies,” declares Gloria Calderon Kellett, the creator and executive producer of “With Love” on Amazon Prime. “Christmas is a big time for Latinos and it was the height of the pandemic. We were sort of feeling, oh, we’re probably not going to be with our families this year. That mixed with this barrage on my Instagram feed of violence against Black and brown and queer and Asian people, plus wanting so much this salve that Christmas movies provide, but don’t often provide to people of color. This is such a feel-good, beautiful genre and it really doesn’t exist for us. I didn’t just present the Christmas episode to Amazon, I presented, ‘What would it look like if we pick up this family and we follow them over the course of a year?'” We talked to Calderon Kellett as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV showrunners panel.

Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

Nearly six years have passed since Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes, and Denzel Washington presented Spike Lee with an honorary Academy Award in recognition of his influential career. Flanked by his colleagues, Jackson spoke for over seven minutes about Lee’s impact on the film industry, with a special focus on his and the director’s enduring friendship. Later, he also bestowed Lee’s first competitive Oscar, leading to their well-remembered on-stage embrace. Now, the time has come for the highly-regarded actor to have his own day in the sun.
Along with Danny Glover, Elaine May, and Liv Ullmann, Jackson is set to be recognized at the upcoming 12th annual Governors Awards. Quiver Distribution isn’t a major name in the entertainment business, but that is gradually changing as the Canadian entertainment company has managed to snag a series of notable projects and used the pandemic to bolster its library of content.
Launched in 2019 by former eOne executive Berry Meyerowitz and former Lionsgate Films president Jeff Sackman, Quiver enjoyed success with the release of the Kevin James comedy “Becky” and “Crisis,” a thriller starring Gary Oldman and Evangeline Lily, both of which were released in select theaters before rising to the top of the VOD charts. “Crisis” also took the top spot at the speciality box office when it was released on Feb. 26. Quiver’s upcoming releases include the off-beat comedy “The Exchange” (pictured) and “The Survivalist,” an action-thriller starring John Malkovich and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The goal, Meyerowitz told Variety, is to release one to two movies monthly, which will add up to roughly 20 movies annually.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Gloria Calderón Kellett has landed her first series order under her overall deal at Amazon, Variety has learned.
Amazon has greenlit the one-hour romantic comedy series “With Love.” It follows the Diaz siblings, Lily and Jorge, who are on a mission to find love and purpose. The Diaz siblings cross paths with seemingly unrelated residents during some of the most heightened days of the year –the holidays. The series is planning to begin production in June with plans to launch it at the end of 2021.
“I started writing as a way to create characters and stories that represented myself and the community I love,” Calderón Kellett said. “After such a heavy year, there was nothing I wanted more than to see a happy, warm, loving family that looked like mine, celebrating trauma-free and falling in love. So, to be bringing that family to life as my first project with Amazon Studios...
