2009 is not exactly a year that horror fans remember fondly. What came out that year? Off the top of the head, not much comes up. A quick search gives us The Unborn, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and Drag Me to Hell. Depending on who you ask, these range from ok movies to Drag Me to Hell, but not exactly memorable overall. Something happened at the end of the 2000s and horror didn’t give us much to work with for some reason. If we dig, we get better titles like The Collector, Laid to Rest, and Paranormal Activity, but their box office ranged from amazing in the case of Paranormal Activity to almost nonexistent for the others, so it was completely hit or miss, like studios didn’t know what to push and what to keep for the home video market. Another movie that had a lot of potential...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Prime Video is also giving watchers some ultimate film classics like “Free Willy,” ”Gladiator,” and “Dances With Wolves.”

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). If you’re already experiencing The Last of Us withdrawals after the finale, let Screambox fill the post-apocalyptic void in your life with The Island.
Known internationally as Sløborn, the series combines elements of disaster thriller, coming-of-age drama, dystopian sci-fi, and survival horror. The German-Danish co-production was created by filmmaker Christian Alvart, who directed the genre films Pandorum, Case 39, and Antibodies before creating Netflix’s Dogs of Berlin.
It’s never been easy to be a teenager, but it’s particularly difficult for Gen Z, who are doomed to reckon with fears of the future — or lack thereof. As 15-year-old Evelin Kern (Emily Kusche) puts it in The Island‘s opening voice over, “Ever since I can remember, the world has been ending. Species extinction, deforestation, economic crises, environmental pollution, terrorism, and climate change. Happy days. Somewhere there is always the next crisis, the next war, and mankind has...

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.
The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.
The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.
October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.
Per an official synopsis: “The Peripheral” centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her. “The Peripheral” is...

Tackling the vampire genre is a brave move in horror. Creating some mass appeal with something akin to Twilight probably means you’ll be making less of a horror movie. David Hasselhoff is heading to Germany to star in a comedy spy series produced by Christian Alvart’s Berlin-based Syrreal Entertainment in what will be the first project from the company’s new international first-look deal with CBS Studios.
A straight-to-series order for Mediengruppe Rtl’s SVOD platform TVNow, “Ze Network” sees Hasselhoff playing himself as he travels to Germany to headline a stage production in what he believes is a major theater in East Berlin, only to discover it’s actually a small venue located “east of Berlin” — in the town of Görlitz. Once there, the Hoff is plunged into the center of an international conspiracy of former Cold War assassins, while around him the fabric of reality seems to break down.
German actor Henry Hübchen likewise plays himself, co-starring with Hasselhoff in the play. This version of Hübchen, however, has a more shadowy East German past than his...

The critically-acclaimed actors famously dated after they met on the set of their film Case 39, which was filmed in the summer of 2009. My first novel “Alice Through The Multiverse” had a lengthy evolution. I am a film maker by trade, 42 crimes against Cinema, and counting. For me writing is an integral part of directing. Here’s an account of this particular creative journey.
I often have wild dreams. One such, in 2003, was the genesis of Alice’s story. All I could remember next morning were a few images. A riot overwhelms a medieval execution… A young girl flees through the forest in a blinding thunderstorm… The girl faints… She wakes up in a 21st Century psychiatric institution… That’s all I could remember. Strange. If dreams are the subconscious putting out the trash, what tortured region of my inner being did this come from? Or was it just psychic screen grabs evoking movies I’ve seen, or maybe a movie I would want to see? I groggily jotted down what I could remember,...

August’s home entertainment releases are off and running in a big way with this week’s crop of horror and sci-fi titles, as we have nearly two dozen movies coming our way this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is putting in overtime with a handful of stunning steelbooks celebrating three great John Carpenter films—They Live, The Fog and Escape From New York—as well as a Collector’s Edition of James Gunn’s Slither and the indie horror films Don’t Knock Twice and House on Willow Street (which they’ve teamed up with IFC Midnight for).
As far as recent genre movies go, Colossal, Shin Godzilla, and Phoenix Forgotten are all primed for their home bow on August 1st, and both Paramount and Universal are dusting off a bunch of recent titles on both DVD and Blu-ray, including Disturbia, The Machinist, Red Eye, and the unrated version of The Ruins.

Canadian-born actress Jodelle Ferland is becoming somewhat of a horror movie legend. Her credits include Silent Hill, Case 39, The Tall Man, The Unspoken and many more. To top it all off, she played Bree Tanner in the ultra successful Twilight film series. MaryAnn’s quick take…
The desperation, the neuroticism, and the idiocy of Bridget Jones continues to be appalling, not appealing. She is not the everywoman she is meant to be. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): can’t stand Bridget Jones
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Bridget Jones — the woman who once served blue plastic soup to her friends, isn’t that adorable? — is back. God help us. She is 43 years old, and both unmarried and childless, which many women would consider a blessing. But not Bridget Jones! In Bridget Jones’s Baby — which bears no resemblance whatsoever to Helen Fielding’s third Bridget novel, Mad About the Boy — she continues to fret about being a “spinster” and a “barren husk,” because in her head, the year is 1953, or maybe even 1853, and not 2016. She worries about coming...

Third time, charmed. In her first major film in six years, Renee Zellweger will return to the big screen as her endearingly hapless character for the third installation of the series, Bridget Jones’s Baby, Universal Pictures announced via Twitter on Friday, Oct. 2. Zellweger’s last box-office flick was 2009’s thriller Case 39, opposite Bradley Cooper. It’s been 11 years since the 46-year-old actress first reprised her role in 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and 14 years since she first stepped into the well-worn heels in [...]...

The new royal baby is finally here - but our minds keep turning to the monster children we're glad will never sit on the throne.
Will and Kate will be thanking their lucky stars that they won't be parents to any of these little on-screen monsters, all waiting to make you shudder on Netflix now (Warning: Contains spoilers):
The Omen
If inexplicable deaths seem to follow your child around from an early age, then you might begin to wonder if your baby was swapped for the offspring of Satan and a jackal.
Of course, it's too late by then. Luckily a 24-hour watch on the new baby seems inevitable at this point, so the chances of an exchange being made seem slim to none.
Carrie
Admittedly, Carrie White didn't have it easy growing up. We hope that the Duchess of Cambridge is a better mum than the fanatical Margaret White.

First of all, Happy Holidays everyone. For this week’s new spotlight piece, I wanted to cite a modern A-lister who also happens to have some classical charm to him. It’s Bradley Cooper, a newly minted leading man who’s continuing to impress the more we get to see from him. He was once considered a pretty boy of sorts, someone you’d never expect to be an Oscar favorite, but in the span of less than a decade, he’s gone from a lightweight to an absolute A-list star, one who’s now considered basically due for an Academy Award. As such, he’s more than a perfect candidate for the spotlight today. Cooper got his start mostly on television (though he did appear in the film Wet Hot American Summer), showing up in things like Sex and the City, where he made his debut. There were also...

The logline is being kept under wraps, but Wright co-wrote the 2010 remake of The Crazies as well as horror thriller Case 39 and Pulse, so expect something creepy. "It's exciting when an original idea takes off, particularly psychological horror which is such a visceral thrill to write," said Wright in the announcement. After movies like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, I’m all for horror anthologies abiding by a particular theme. There’s something inherently fun about such a cornucopia of treats, as different directors populate one single film with so many distinctive styles and traits – as long as the segments set the stage for such fun. I’ll always give a horror anthology a try, from Chillerama to The Theatre Bizarre, which is why I’m happy to say we’ve got an exciting anthology coming our way with Fear Paris.
Newly announced, Fear Paris will join the likes of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman/Frontier(s)), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky), as they explore the horrific underworld of France’s iconic capital city. Here’s the full press release, accompanied by a tonal teaser below:

Pandorum and Antibodies director, Christian Alvart, has made a movie about Germany's first female bank robber in the 60s-set thriller, Bank Lady. Being a massive fan of all Alvart's films (yes, including Case 39), I've had my eye on Bank Lady for a year or so, but now that the film has found worldwide distribution in Munich-based sales group, Global Screen, it looks like we may actually get to see it soon.
Bank Lady tells "the story of Gisela Werler, a factory worker from Hamburg who becomes a notorious bank robber, portrayed as a cunning and glamorous bandit, thanks to the various disguises, wigs and film-star sunglasses worn during heists. Werler takes ever greater risks, with lover Hermann in tow, while police inspector Fisher is close on her heels." ( [Continued ...]...

Last weekend marked the long awaited theatrical release of You're Next, a home invasion horror flick that premiered on the festival circuit just about a full two years ago, way back in September of 2011. (Check out our review here.) Is it uncommon for such a highly praised film to take so long to enter our lives? Well, not exactly. Today we take a look back at ten other horror films that also spent a lot of time on the shelf before getting released, the majority of which ended up becoming big time fan favorites. Go figure! Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Though widely regarded as one of the best and most disturbing horror films the genre has ever seen, John McNaughton's real-life-inspired Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was made in 1986 but not released until 1990. Several factors contributed to the delay, but it was the film's extremely graphic content that was largely responsible,...

Though he’s known for films like The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Hard Candy, director David Slade has been spending his time in the world of television lately. He directed the pilot for Awake, he’s helmed three episodes of the Mads Mikkelsen starring Hannibal and has also taken a stab at an episode of Breaking Bad. Now, the director is returning to the big screen as THR reports that he’s on board to step behind the camera for The Widow, a psychological thriller from Vendom Pictures, who produced and financed Source Code.
Penned by Ray Wright (The Crazies, Case 39), the film follows “a young woman who befriends a lonely widow only to discover that their encounter was not a coincidence.” No casting has been announced just yet but the search for a lead actress is underway and Slade is hoping to start shooting later this year.

After directing The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (arguably the best film in the franchise, which isn't saying much), 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy director David Slade stepped back into more comfortable territory on TV by directing the pilot for "Awake," three episodes of "Hannibal" with Mads Mikkelsen (worth checking out) and an episode of "Breaking Bad." Now the director is coming to big screen thriller territory as THR reports Slade is on board to direct a psychological thriller called The Widow for a company called Vendome Pictures, which financed and produced the Duncan Jones' film Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal. Ray Wright, who scripted The Crazies and Case 39, is behind the script which follows a young woman who befriends a lonely widow only to discover that their encounter was not a coincidence. And that's all the information we have. There's likely some sort of darker, twisted element to...

Mama's tiny terrors are the latest in a long line of murderous movie munchkins
They screwed up Macaulay Culkin and now they're coming for the rest of our young. Ever since the 2002 American remake of The Ring sparked a resurgence in the 'creepy kids' horror subgenre, Hollywood has been unrelenting in its hostility towards the apparently cherubic boys and girls who adorn its silver screen. This week, Us box office sensation Mama furthers the cause of universally available birth control with a duo of demonic youngsters that make Will Smith's progeny look positively cuddly. When the film's twin terrors aren't humming nursery rhymes in cold, emotionless tones or appearing suddenly from behind doorways with looks of quiet evil smeared across their faces, you'll find them drawing scratchy pictures of murder, mutilation and torture. Between them, the girl from The Others and Haley Joel Osment, Crayola's 'blood and gore' range...

Some preliminary news on a project that may or may not end up being Dread-worthy, Ray Wright's thriller The Widow, has come in; but since Wright previously wrote/co-wrote The Crazies, Case 39, and Pulse, we figured there'll likely be some horror here.
Variety reports that Vendome Pictures has acquiring The Widow as spec script written by Ray Wright. Vendome CEO Philippe Rousselet will produce along with Steve Golin and Alix Madigan of Anonymous Content. Vendome will also finance, and Vendome's Guy Stodel and Sarah Schweitzman will oversee the project on behalf of Vendome.
Producers are seeking a director with plans to commence production this year.

Renée Zellweger's career seems to have taken a turn for the worst. The last mainstream movie she made was a terrible horror film called Case 39. She hasn't really done anything memorable since Ron Howard's 2005 film Cinderella Man.
She's now attached to direct and star alongside Johnny Knoxville in a comedy called 4 1/2 Minutes. This will be the first movie directed by Zellweger, and the story is set in "New York City’s stand-up milieu with Knoxville playing a commitment-phobic comic whose life is falling apart when he takes a job looking after single-mom Zellweger’s genius son." The story is based on the comedy of real-life stand-up Dov Davidoff, and the script for the film was written by Warrior‘s Anthony Tambakis.
Not sure if this will be a comeback for Zellweger, but I think it's a great role for Knoxville to take on! What are your thoughts on this project,...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

When not distracted by the more offbeat, artistically inclined one-sheets for the amazing line-up gracing Toronto screens at Tiff this month, I was surprised to see a few good ones hit the September release schedule proper. Whether or not a couple of them find live on both lists is beside the point.
With enough to talk about that I don’t even need to bother with the umpteenth example of Milla Jovovich shooting a gun while skewed on the page in Resident Evil: Retribution (open September 14th) (poster...

A few weeks ago Dread Central caught up with ParaNorman's directing duo of Chris Butler and Sam Fell during the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, where we heard a bit about the basics of their delightful stop-motion animation film.
The flick features an adorably quirky hero named Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who must save his town from a 300-year-old witch's curse and a horde of zombies that have risen from the dead to wreak havoc.
Of course, after we finally had the opportunity to see ParaNorman for ourselves (it will undoubtedly make it onto this writer's Top 5 list for 2012), we had just a few more questions for Butler and Fell regarding the film's anti-bullying message, sharing director duties, and whether or not they faced any difficulties while creating a kids' horror movie that still manages to be loads of fun for older audiences.
Check out some of the highlights from...

In 2009 Laika established itself as one of the premier up-and-coming animation studios by releasing the sublimely dark fairy tale Coraline, based on the classic Neil Gaiman story of the same name. This weekend Laika is set to unveil its latest stop-motion animated project, ParaNorman.
The 3D ParaNorman (review here) follows an 11-year-old boy named Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who can see ghosts and must use that power to save his small town from a 300-year-old curse that unleashes a tribe of zombies on the unsuspecting townsfolk.
During a recent press day for the film, Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with Laika CEO and ParaNorman producer/animator Travis Knight (pictured right) about developing the project with directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell, the look and feel of the project, and why stop-motion animation will always endure even with all of the technological advances in filmmaking throughout the years.

Jessica Biel will do anything to save her son in "The Tall Man." The upcoming thriller from "Martyrs" director Pascal Laugier is due out on VOD tomorrow before hitting theaters in a limited release on August 31, and MTV News has an exclusive clip from the project to tease you for its impending premiere.

Biel stars as a mother who lives in town where children are going missing, though she doesn't believe in the myth of the Tall Man kidnapper until her own son disappears.
Between her work on "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Cellular" and this film, Biel has definitely mastered her look of terror. Tensions are running high in this clip, which shows Biel's character Julia Denning coming face-to-face with the titular Tall Man.
In addition, this movie stars "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse's" Jodelle Ferland, who also has quite a history in horror. She's been terrifying us for years...
