Lively thrills from Belgium's top reporter

KING OTTOKAR'S SCEPTER is another fun two-part episode of THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN TV series. This one has everything exactly as you'd expect from the show: lots of basic hand-drawn animation that looks and feels somewhat endearing; lovable antics involving the irresistible Tintin and his erstwhile companion Snowy; pratfalls from the bumbling Thompson Twins; a fast-paced story that swaps countries at regular intervals; lots of transport and travelling about; and a nefarious criminal gang with murder in mind.

This time around Tintin literally stumbles into action when he discovers satchel on a park bench and decides to return it to its owner. Soon enough he's involved in a plot to steal a priceless royal relic and he must rely on his wits to outwit his foes. While KING OTTOKAR'S SCEPTER has nothing outstanding it to distinguish it from any of the other stories in this show, it's nonetheless a lively and fun-filled adventure.

Warning: Spoilers
After Tintin finds a suitcase in a park, he returns it to the owner Professor Hector Alembick, who's an expert on seals. After showing Tintin his prized seal that belonged to Syldavian King Ottokar IV, he offers Tintin a secretary job for when he travels to Syldavia. Tintin declines, but when he discovers there's some suspicious people lurking about and they're surveillance Alembick. After getting warnings to steer clear, he takes up the professor's original offer. On his way there, he gets rather concerned about strange developments within the professor's personality. He suspicions are correct, when suddenly he's dropped out of the plane, but comes away safely. Though he stumbles across a booklet which plans to steal the sceptre of King Ottokar IV. So he goes to the police in the nearest town, which after showing them the evidence they get him some transport to reach the castle, but there are some obstacles along the way.

"King Ottokar's Sceptre" is writer and illustrator Herge's eighth comic strip album of "The Adventures of Tintin" and the fourth episode (part 1 of 2) of Season 2. A political interest flows from this well-thought up detective story, which plays it all in a rather subdued manner and rallies up a well kept mystery. What makes this a curious outing, is there's quite a focus on the elegant backdrop, which does stick out and gives it some unexpected class and a dressed up shine. Tintin really has luck on his side, and the accident prone Thompsons join in for the fun. The pacing of this one leisurely ticks along, but when the action occurs and conspiracy unfolds (mainly in the second half), it's at full speed. This particular adventure is one of the most solid and multi-layered tales that delivers across the board.
